If Discord is stuck on RTC Connecting, Connecting, ICE Checking, No Route, or Waiting for Voice Server, first check Discord’s official status page, try another server or network, completely restart Discord, and disconnect any VPN. Those tests quickly show whether the cause is a Discord outage, server permissions, or your device and network.
Identify the exact Discord voice error
These messages describe different stages of the connection process, so the best fix depends on what you see:

- RTC Connecting: Discord is trying to establish the real-time voice connection.
- ICE Checking: Discord is checking possible network paths to the voice server.
- Connecting: The connection process has not completed.
- No Route: Discord cannot find or maintain a usable route to the voice server.
- Waiting for Voice Server: This can indicate a Discord-side voice-service problem, particularly when many users are affected.
A repeated connecting and disconnecting loop commonly points to an unstable network path, VPN or security-software interference, or a client problem, but the message alone does not prove which one is responsible. Discord groups these states among common voice connection failures caused by firewalls, antivirus software, VPNs, restricted networks, ISP problems, or voice-region issues. Fast five-minute fix
- Check Discord Status for incidents involving voice, video, calls, gateway, or session services.
- Try another voice channel, another server, or a direct message call.
- Fully quit Discord and reopen it. Closing the window may leave the client running; on Windows, check Task Manager for remaining Discord processes.
- Disconnect your VPN and retry. Discord says its voice service requires a VPN that supports UDP if you use one.
- Restart your computer or phone and, if other internet services are unstable, restart the modem or router.
- Test a different connection, such as a phone hotspot. If voice works there, the original network path is involved; the test does not identify whether the router, ISP, VPN, firewall, or network policy is responsible.
- Ask a server administrator to check your permission to connect and whether the channel is full.
- Update Discord, then reset its Voice & Video settings if the problem remains.
Check whether Discord is down
Open discordstatus.com before reinstalling anything. Also ask another person in the same server whether voice works, then try another server or a direct call. If every server and device fails at the same time, a Discord incident or broader service issue is more likely than a damaged installation.

For example, Discord documented a major voice outage on March 25, 2026, during which users were largely unable to start or join calls and some saw “Awaiting Endpoint.” Reinstalling Discord cannot repair a confirmed service outage, so wait for the incident to be resolved and monitor the status page.
If only one server or channel fails
Verify the Connect permission
Discord separates the permissions needed to enter and use a voice channel:
- Connect controls whether you can join the channel.
- Speak controls whether your microphone can transmit after you join.
- Video controls video transmission.
A locked channel is a strong indication that you cannot enter it. An administrator should inspect your role’s Connect permission and any channel-specific override that denies it. Server mute or server deafen may affect what you can do after joining, but they normally do not explain a failure to establish the voice connection. Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide recommends comparing affected channels and servers to distinguish permissions from device problems.

Check the channel user limit
A voice channel can be full. Ask someone to leave, or have an administrator temporarily raise the channel’s user limit. Discord’s developer documentation says a full channel does not provide the normal voice connection updates; users with the appropriate move-members permission can bypass the limit. If other voice channels work, capacity or channel configuration is more likely than a device-wide problem.
Test the voice region
Region switching is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. A server administrator with Manage Channels permission can:

- Right-click the voice channel.
- Select Edit Channel.
- Open the channel’s voice settings.
- Find Region Override.
- Temporarily select another region.
- Have the affected user disconnect and reconnect.
If the setting is Automatic, Discord’s FAQ recommends disconnecting and reconnecting first. A poor manual region can increase latency for other members, so return the channel to Automatic if the override does not help. Private voice calls can also have their region changed. Check VPN, firewall, antivirus, and restricted networks
If you can text-chat but cannot establish voice on every server, network interference is a leading possibility.

- Test security software briefly. Temporarily pause a third-party firewall or antivirus only for a controlled test, then turn it back on immediately.
- Create an allow rule. If Discord works while protection is paused, allow Discord through the security product instead of leaving protection disabled.
- Try a phone hotspot. A successful hotspot test points toward the original network, router, ISP, VPN, or firewall.
- Ask the network administrator. School, work, hotel, public, and managed networks may block Discord voice traffic or UDP.
Restarting the router is useful when internet access is unstable across multiple devices, but it disconnects everyone and will not fix a Discord outage, missing permissions, or a channel limit. A router can also provide normal web access while mishandling or blocking voice traffic.
Update Discord before deeper repairs
Discord introduced a requirement for end-to-end-encrypted voice and video conversations on March 2, 2026. The minimum desktop versions published by Discord, checked August 18, 2026, are:

These are dated requirements, not a promise that they will remain current. Update through Discord’s normal client process or download the latest official version from discord.com/download. An old installation is especially worth checking when browser or mobile Discord works but the desktop client does not.

If the Discord app is stuck or corrupted
- Fully exit Discord.
- On Windows, open Task Manager and end any remaining Discord processes.
- Reopen Discord.
- Refresh the client with Ctrl+R on Windows or Command+R on macOS.
- Restart the device.
- Update Discord.
- Only then consider a clean reinstall from the official download page.
Reinstalling can help when the desktop installation is outdated or corrupted, particularly if browser Discord works. It will not fix blocked UDP traffic, a Discord outage, a full channel, or a missing permission. Cache deletion can be useful for an inconsistent client, but cache locations differ by operating system and client version, so do not treat one universal folder path as a guaranteed fix.
Reset Voice & Video settings
On desktop or browser Discord:
- Open User Settings.
- Select Voice & Video.
- Open the Debugging section.
- Select Reset Voice and Video Settings.
Note your preferred input device, output device, input mode, and processing options first. Resetting removes customized settings, so recheck those choices afterward.
Disable Quality of Service packet priority as a secondary test
For choppy, robotic, intermittent, or unstable audio, Discord recommends disabling Ensure Quality of Service High Packet Priority under User Settings → Voice & Video → Voice. This is more relevant to poor voice quality than a total inability to join, so it should not be the first response to “RTC Connecting” or “No Route.”

If browser Discord works but the desktop app fails
That result suggests an app-specific or desktop security problem, not necessarily that Discord’s servers are healthy. Update or refresh the desktop client, reset Voice & Video, check firewall and antivirus rules for the desktop executable, and reinstall only if needed. Testing a supported browser can help isolate the client without immediately deleting the app.
If mobile works but desktop fails
Focus on the desktop Discord version, desktop VPN or firewall rules, the network adapter, operating-system permissions, and client corruption. A successful mobile test does not rule out a problem with the shared network if the mobile device is using cellular data rather than Wi-Fi.

If browser Discord joins but the microphone does not work
Microphone permissions usually explain “I joined but nobody can hear me,” not a persistent connection state. Check Discord’s Input Device, operating-system microphone permission, mute and server-mute status, and whether Input Mode is accidentally set to Push to Talk. Use Discord’s built-in microphone test. In Chrome, remove Discord from blocked microphone exceptions and allow microphone access when prompted; Discord documents the process in its Chrome microphone guide.
Separate connection failure from audio failure

Advanced checks: use only after the official steps
Commands such as ipconfig /flushdns, changing DNS, disabling IPv6, reinstalling network drivers, clearing cache, or running Discord as administrator are not guaranteed fixes and are not Discord’s current first-line remedies for voice connection errors.
Use them only when you have a specific platform or network reason to do so. Running Discord as administrator should be a temporary Windows test rather than a permanent requirement, and disabling IPv6 or reinstalling drivers can create new connectivity problems. If a hotspot test fails in the same way, these local changes are less likely to solve a Discord-wide or account-side issue.
When to contact Discord Support
If Discord Status is normal, permissions and channel capacity are correct, another network does not help, and the client is updated and reset, contact Discord Support. Include:

- The date and time, including your time zone.
- Your device, operating system, and Discord version.
- Whether you use the desktop app, browser, or mobile app.
- Whether other servers, devices, or networks work.
- A screenshot of the error.
- Console information if Support requests it.
On Windows, open the client console with Ctrl+Shift+I; on macOS, use Option+Command+I. Follow Support’s instructions for collecting and submitting logs rather than posting sensitive information publicly.
Bottom line
Start with scope, not reinstalling: check Discord Status, try another channel and network, restart Discord, disconnect the VPN, and ask an administrator to verify Connect permission and channel capacity. Then update Discord—especially after the March 2, 2026 voice-client requirement—and reset Voice & Video. Only after those checks should you investigate cache, DNS, drivers, or administrator mode.
