When Discord will not open, start with the least destructive checks: confirm Discord is not down, fully quit the app, restart your device, test another network, and verify that your operating system is supported. Only then clear local files or perform a clean reinstall. Before deleting application data, make sure you know your Discord password and can complete two-factor authentication.
“Won’t open” can mean several different problems: no window appears, Discord opens and immediately closes, the app is stuck on a gray or blank screen, an update loops forever, or the mobile app will not install. Use the symptom guide below, then stop as soon as Discord works.

Quick diagnosis
- Nothing happens: a stuck background process, failed updater, corrupted installation, or unsupported operating system is likely.
- Discord appears, then closes: suspect damaged files, compatibility, security software, or a current app-specific bug.
- Gray, black, or blank window: cache, graphics rendering, hardware acceleration, or network loading may be involved.
- “Update failed” or an endless update loop: damaged local Discord folders, permissions, firewall or proxy interference, or an installer problem are common possibilities.
- Discord works in a browser but not the desktop app: the desktop installation is the more likely problem.
- The mobile app crashes or will not install: check updates, storage, app-store issues, compatibility, and the network.
- It works on one device but not another: this strongly suggests a local device or installation issue, although it is not definitive.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
Discord’s current published minimums are listed below. These requirements were checked on August 18, 2026; Discord may revise them later. The newer requirements page should take precedence over older troubleshooting references that mention earlier macOS or Windows versions.

Discord also does not support rooted or jailbroken devices, beta operating systems, or Discord in a mobile browser. 12 fixes for Discord not opening
1. Check Discord’s service status
Open the official Discord status page and look for an incident involving login, API, desktop, mobile, or messaging services. If Discord reports an incident, wait for recovery before deleting files or reinstalling the app. A status page can still show normal operation during an isolated regional, ISP, DNS, account, or network problem, so continue troubleshooting if only your device is affected.
2. Fully quit Discord and reopen it
A Discord window does not need to be visible for the app to remain active and lock files.
- Windows: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Task Manager, and end every Discord process, including updater-related processes. Also close Discord from the system tray.
- macOS: press Option + Command + Esc, select Discord, choose Force Quit, and reopen it from Applications or Launchpad.
- Linux: quit Discord from the system tray or desktop process manager. If necessary, terminate its process using your distribution’s normal process-management tool.
Wait a few seconds before launching Discord again. This is one of the official Discord troubleshooting recommendations.

Restart Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone, or iPad normally. A full restart can clear a locked file, stuck updater, failed app-store operation, or temporary network state. After restarting, try Discord before reopening other demanding applications.
4. Test the network and remove temporary interference
This matters especially when Discord launches but remains on “Starting,” “Loading,” or a blank screen.
- Open another website to confirm that the connection works.
- Try Discord on another network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy. A VPN can sometimes bypass routing trouble, but it can also interfere with Discord, so it is not a universal fix.
- Restart the modem or router if multiple devices have connection problems.
- Check whether a firewall, antivirus product, parental-control filter, school network, or corporate security policy is blocking Discord.
- If only one network fails, investigate DNS, router filtering, or network restrictions.

5. Update the operating system
Install pending updates, then restart:
- Windows: use Windows Update.
- macOS: install available macOS updates if the Mac can meet Discord’s macOS 12 minimum.
- Android: usually Settings > System > Software update; labels vary by manufacturer.
- iPhone/iPad: go to Settings > General > Software Update.
Discord recommends keeping the operating system and relevant drivers current. An unsupported OS cannot be made compatible simply by reinstalling Discord.

6. Update Discord or download the official installer
If Discord opens far enough to show settings, install its available update. If it will not open, download the desktop app from Discord’s official download page. On mobile, use only the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Avoid modified clients, third-party APK sites, unofficial installers, and random “Discord repair” utilities.
7. Clear Discord’s desktop cache
Use this for gray or blank screens, loading freezes, and suspected temporary-file corruption. Quit Discord first.
Windows
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%appdata%discord. - Delete
Cache. If the problem continues, also removeCode CacheandGPUCache. - Reopen Discord.
macOS
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/discord. - Delete the
Cachefolder and relaunch Discord.
Cache deletion removes local temporary files; it does not delete your server messages, DMs, memberships, or account data. However, local session state can be reset, and you may need to sign in again. Confirm that you know your credentials and have your two-factor authentication method available first.
8. Perform a clean Windows reinstall
Use this for an “installation appears corrupt” message, endless update loops, immediate crashes, installer failures, or a problem that survives cache deletion.

- Open Task Manager and terminate every Discord process.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%appdata%, and delete theDiscordfolder. - Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and delete theDiscordfolder there too. - Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from Discord and install it.
These are Discord’s documented Windows reset locations. If Windows says a folder is in use, recheck the system tray, Task Manager, and Startup apps, end remaining Discord processes, and try again. Discord also documents running the installed app as administrator or trying Windows 7/8 compatibility mode as advanced, last-resort installer workarounds. They are not recommended as permanent defaults on modern Windows.

9. Reset and reinstall Discord on macOS
- Force-quit Discord with Option + Command + Esc if necessary.
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/. - Move the
discordfolder to the Trash. - Restart the Mac.
- Download the current installer from Discord’s official download page and reinstall.
Do not assume that macOS 11 is still supported: Discord’s current requirements page lists macOS 12 Monterey or later.
10. Repair mobile app and app-store problems
Android
- Restart the phone.
- Update Android and check available storage.
- Open Settings > Apps > Discord > Storage and clear Discord’s cache. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- If installation fails, force-close Google Play Store.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage > Clear Cache > Clear Data.
- Reopen Google Play Store and reinstall Discord.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
Clearing Play Store data can require signing back into your Google account and reconfiguring store settings.
iPhone and iPad
- Restart the device.
- Install the latest iOS or iPadOS update available for it.
- Check storage under Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
- Update Discord through the App Store.
- If it still crashes, delete Discord and reinstall it from the App Store.
- Confirm that the device supports iOS/iPadOS 16 or later.

11. Disable hardware acceleration only when settings are reachable
This is for a gray, blank, or unstable window—not for an app that creates no window at all.
- Open User Settings.
- Select Advanced.
- Turn off Hardware Acceleration.
- Restart Discord.
Hardware acceleration may help with a graphics or rendering problem, but it will not repair an outage, unsupported OS, broken installer, or blocked network.
12. Use Discord on the web or another device
While diagnosing the desktop app, try Discord in a supported desktop browser or on another supported device. A browser workaround may not provide every desktop integration or game-overlay feature. Discord’s requirements page says Discord in a mobile browser is not supported, so do not treat a phone browser as an officially supported substitute.

When to stop troubleshooting
After a supported device has a working network, Discord’s status page is operational, and a clean reinstall still produces the same reproducible failure, stop making random system changes. Record:

- your operating system and version;
- whether Discord works in a supported browser or on another device;
- whether the failure began after an update;
- what fixes you already tried.
Submit those details through Discord Support. A current bug may affect one operating system, GPU, driver, or app release, and no single cache or reinstall procedure fixes every such case.

Will clearing Discord’s cache delete my messages or servers?
No. Messages, DMs, memberships, and server access are tied to your account, not the local cache. You may lose local session state and need to sign in again.
Why does Discord work in my browser but not in the desktop app?
That usually points to a damaged desktop installation, updater, cache, or local security setting rather than a total Discord outage. Try the cache reset or clean reinstall.
Should I use a VPN to fix Discord?
Not as a general solution. A VPN may bypass a routing problem, but Discord also identifies VPN or proxy interference as a possible cause. Test with the VPN disconnected first.
