Discord’s March 25, 2025 desktop update rebuilt Game Overlay around movable widgets and added customization options to the desktop app. The Overlay is for Windows only, requires a supported game, and works in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Discord says the new design should improve performance and compatibility, but it has not published benchmarks showing a particular frame-rate or latency gain.
What changed in Discord’s Game Overlay
The older Overlay worked more like Discord embedded in a game window. Discord said that approach hooked into games in ways that could affect performance, compatibility, and anti-cheat systems. The redesigned Overlay separates features into movable widgets, so players can keep the controls they need in view without opening the full desktop client. Discord described the change as faster and lighter, but its announcement does not quantify resource use or report independent tests. Discord’s March 25, 2025 announcement explains the design change.

What you can do in the new Overlay
Discord’s how-to guide identifies six main widget types: Chat Bar, Voice Channel, Video Tiles, Activity, Screenshare, and Notifications. The guide describes their in-game use.
- Chat Bar: access chat and the Overlay’s central controls.
- Voice Channel: see who is in the call, identify who is speaking, and manage voice chat or its settings.
- Video Tiles: view video and control your camera.
- Activity: browse supported Activities and view relevant game activity information.
- Screenshare: start a game stream, adjust stream quality, or watch friends’ streams without leaving the game.
- Notifications: see Discord alerts such as messages, mentions, and game invites.
The Overlay also provides Soundboard access. Not every feature will be relevant in every game or setup; widgets can be moved out of the way, and unnecessary ones can be left closed. The March 25 changelog documents the Soundboard addition: Discord’s changelog.

How to enable and open the Overlay
The feature is available in Discord’s Windows desktop app. Discord’s support documentation says it does not work on macOS or Linux, and its guide says the game must run in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Labels may shift between client builds, but the settings path is User Settings > Overlay.
- Open Discord on Windows and select the gear icon to open User Settings.
- Choose Overlay and enable Game Overlay.
- If the client shows controls for individual games, check that the game you plan to play is enabled.
- Launch a supported game in windowed or borderless-windowed mode.
- Press Ctrl + ` to open or close the Overlay. The backtick key is usually above Tab and to the left of the number row.
- Drag a widget’s dotted handle or other on-screen controls to reposition it; use the available widget controls to resize or hide components.

How to arrange widgets for different games
Widget placement is a practical choice, not a prescribed Discord layout. Keep the parts you use visible and move them away from important game information.

- Strategy games: place voice, notifications, or a stream in a screen area that does not cover the map or controls you use most.
- Co-op games: prioritize the voice channel, video tiles, or a friend’s stream if those help your group coordinate.
- Competitive play: leave the Overlay off if it distracts you, causes instability, or is incompatible with the game’s anti-cheat setup.
Watching streams and using video can consume bandwidth and system resources. If you notice disruption, close those widgets before deciding whether the Overlay itself is the cause.
What changed in the desktop app
The desktop refresh is separate from the in-game Overlay. It adds appearance and layout options for using Discord outside a game; liking one redesign does not require liking the other.
Themes and interface density
The March 2025 update introduced four free base themes—Light, Ash, Dark, and Onyx—and three density settings: Spacious, Default, and Compact. Spacious uses more screen space and may make items easier to scan; Compact fits more content but can feel crowded; Default is the general-purpose option. These settings may not resolve every readability or spacing concern. The available announcement does not claim that Compact makes every control or server icon larger. Discord’s announcement lists the themes and density choices.

Channel list and calls
You can resize the channel list, which can help when server or channel names are long. The refresh also groups voice and video controls in a central bar and makes microphone and camera states more visually distinct: a stronger red indicator signals a muted microphone, while green indicates an active camera. The channel-list change is included in the March 25 changelog.
Why some users disliked the desktop refresh
Feedback on Discord’s community forums includes complaints about smaller-looking server icons, extra padding, reduced information density, blurry or small text, contrast, and control placement. These are user reports, not a controlled usability assessment, and preferences can depend on display size, scaling, theme, and familiarity with the older interface. One community feedback thread records reactions to the refreshed desktop UI. The announcement and cited feedback do not verify a legacy-layout toggle.
Does the redesign improve gaming performance?
Discord says its rebuilt Overlay is faster, lighter, and more compatible. That is a product claim, not a published benchmark: Discord’s announcement gives no frame-rate, input-latency, CPU, or GPU comparison. The update is therefore not a guarantee that your game will run faster, and the Overlay can still conflict with particular games or anti-cheat systems.

If you want to judge the effect on your own setup, compare the game with the Overlay on and off under similar conditions. Check frame rate, responsiveness, CPU and GPU use, stream stability, and any crashes or anti-cheat warnings. Treat this as a system-specific comparison, not proof that the same result applies to other PCs.
Does it work with every PC game?
No. Discord says compatibility expanded, but it does not claim universal support. The Overlay requires Windows and a supported game, and Discord’s guide specifies windowed or borderless-windowed play. Compatibility may also depend on the individual title and its anti-cheat configuration. The sources cited here do not establish a complete, current supported-games list, so check the in-client game controls or test the title rather than assuming it is compatible.

- In Discord, open User Settings > Overlay and confirm Game Overlay is enabled.
- If individual game controls appear, make sure the affected title is enabled there.
- Confirm you are using Discord’s Windows desktop app and that the game is in windowed or borderless-windowed mode.
- Update Discord, then restart Discord and the game after changing settings.
- Try Ctrl + ` again. If the shortcut was changed in your client, use the configured key instead.
- Test another supported Windows game. If the Overlay works there, the issue may be specific to the original title.
- Consider whether another overlay or the game’s anti-cheat system is blocking the feature. If the game remains incompatible, use Discord’s desktop client outside the game or disable the Overlay for that title.
If widgets cover the game
Move them away from the HUD, close widgets you do not need, or switch display modes. If the Overlay remains distracting or unstable, turn it off for that game.
If text or controls are hard to read
Try Spacious or Default density, choose a theme with more comfortable contrast, widen the channel list, and adjust Discord’s application scaling if that option is available in your client. For long reading sessions, use the desktop app outside the game.
If streaming affects performance
Lower stream quality, stop watching other streams, and close video tiles you do not need. Then compare performance with the Overlay disabled, keeping other settings consistent where possible.
Is the redesigned Overlay worth using?
For Windows players who regularly use Discord voice chat, notifications, or streams while gaming, movable widgets and in-game access to calls and streaming are functional additions. The value depends on whether the title supports the Overlay and whether its widgets help more than they distract. The desktop refresh is a separate, more subjective change: themes, density controls, a resizable channel list, and clearer call states may help some users, while others may prefer the older spacing and layout.
