Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“This application failed to start because diskfau.dll was not found.” The diskfau.dll error usually points to an old PC Pitstop utility or browser component, not a missing Windows system file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that matches what you see:
- The error names an old PC Pitstop utility or appears when opening its shortcut: repair or reinstall that program from its legitimate installer or vendor support channel.
- The error appears during Windows startup, but you no longer use the program: identify and remove the stale startup entry or uninstall the obsolete utility.
- Your antivirus recently quarantined the file: inspect quarantine history before restoring anything. Restore it only when the file clearly belongs to an installed PC Pitstop component and the detection is a false positive.
- The file exists but the program still will not start: reinstall the complete application. The problem may be a missing dependency, incorrect registration, or a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
- Several Windows programs are also damaged: run Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker as a secondary Windows-integrity check.
- You found
diskfau.dllinSystem32orSysWOW64: do not overwrite it with a downloaded copy. The historical component was associated with downloaded program files, not Windows core folders.
The safest rule is simple: identify the executable requesting the DLL, then repair or remove that application. Do not begin by copying a DLL into a Windows folder.

What is diskfau.dll
diskfau.dll is an obscure legacy DLL associated with PC Pitstop utilities. Historical utility documentation identifies it as the DiskHealth Class, used for disk-health and fragmentation checks on NTFS and FAT32 volumes.
The component was delivered historically as an Internet Explorer ActiveX component. An old distributed-program-files record places it under a path similar to:

That historical location matters. It indicates an application component downloaded by an older browser-based utility, not a normal Windows library.
There is no reliable evidence that diskfau.dll ships with Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. It is also not established as a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 component.
Third-party catalogues describe the internal name as “DiskFAU Module” and publish version, size, and architecture details. Those catalogue values should not be treated as verified vendor facts because a current trusted vendor binary was not available for comparison.

A missing-DLL message means that a program requested diskfau.dll and Windows could not load the expected component. It does not necessarily mean that the file was simply deleted.
Common causes include:
-
The old PC Pitstop utility was removed incompletely.
The main program may be gone while a shortcut, startup entry, scheduled task, or browser component still tries to load the DLL. -
The component was damaged.
A failed update, disk problem, cleanup operation, or interrupted uninstall can leave the application incomplete. -
Antivirus software quarantined it.
Security software may remove an old ActiveX component because its age, behavior, or packaging is considered unsafe.Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

These are common forms of DLL error reporting, not confirmed quotations from Microsoft or PC Pitstop. The important information is which executable displays the message and when it appears.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting diskfau.dll
Before repairing files, find the application that launches the error.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the text around the message. It may name the program or show a path. Write down the application name before closing the window.
If the message appears when you use a desktop shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable path.
- Open the Details tab if available and record the product name.
Do not run an unfamiliar executable just to test it.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for PC Pitstop, DiskHealth, or the name shown in the error.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what Windows provides.
If the program is not listed, continue with the startup checks below.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps in Windows 11, or the Startup tab in Windows 10.
- Look for PC Pitstop, DiskHealth, an unknown entry, or an entry marked Disabled or Unknown.
- Right-click a clearly identified obsolete entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup entry does not delete the application. It only prevents that item from launching automatically. If the error stops, uninstall the associated old program through Settings.
Check Event Viewer when the source is unclear
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- In the right pane, select Find.
- Search for
diskfau.dll. - Read the event details and note the faulting application.
Event Viewer may identify the executable even when the popup does not.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original PC Pitstop utility
This is the most likely definitive fix when the error belongs to an old PC Pitstop utility.

- Restart Windows.
- Open the application again.
If Repair is not available, use the program’s own maintenance option from its installer or Control Panel.

Reinstall from a legitimate source
If repair does not work:
- Save any settings or reports you still need.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the old PC Pitstop program.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the software vendor’s legitimate support or download channel.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not use a standalone diskfau.dll download as a substitute for the application installer. The complete installer is more likely to supply the correct supporting files, registration entries, and application architecture.
If the vendor no longer supplies a compatible installer, removing the obsolete utility is safer than rebuilding it from an unverified DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed the component.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
diskfau.dll, PC Pitstop, DiskHealth, or the executable that produced the error. - Expand the event to inspect its path and detection name.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The path belongs to the installed application.
- You recognize the application.
- The file was obtained through a legitimate installer.
- Your security provider confirms the detection is a false positive.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unexpected download location, or a Windows system directory, do not restore it merely to remove the popup. Remove the associated obsolete program and run a full security scan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After restoring a legitimate file, reinstalling the complete application is still preferable to copying the quarantined DLL manually.
Fix 4: Locate existing copies without changing them
These commands can show whether a copy exists. They do not repair, register, or replace anything.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run each command separately:
where /r "%ProgramFiles%" diskfau.dll
where /r "%ProgramFiles(x86)%" diskfau.dll
where /r "%windir%" diskfau.dll
A copy inside an application folder may belong to that application. A copy in System32 or SysWOW64 deserves caution because the historical evidence associates this component with downloaded program files rather than Windows core directories.
If a copy is found, note its full path and identify the executable that needs it. Do not overwrite the file or move it between folders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 5: Use regsvr32 only when the original component requires registration
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It calls registration entry points exposed by self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries. Microsoft documents that some DLLs support this process and others do not.
Because diskfau.dll was historically associated with an ActiveX component, registration is plausible, but the available evidence does not verify that this particular binary exports the required registration function.
If the original application’s installer specifically instructs you to register the file:

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Find the DLL’s actual application path.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Change to that folder. For example:
cd /d "C:PathToTheApplication"
- Run the registration command requested by the installer:
regsvr32 diskfau.dll
- Restart the original application.
A success message means registration completed. It does not prove that the DLL is safe or that all dependencies are installed.
Errors such as “entry point was not found,” “module could not be loaded,” or an architecture-related failure usually mean that the DLL is not self-registering, a dependency is missing, or the wrong registration utility was used. Reinstall the complete application instead of repeatedly trying commands.
Do not run regsvr32 against a DLL downloaded from an unknown website.
Fix 6: Remove a stale application instead of restoring the DLL
If you no longer need the old utility, removal is the correct repair.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the PC Pitstop or related utility.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Recheck Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Remove or disable any clearly related leftover entry.
If the popup continues, inspect:
- Task Manager > Startup apps
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- Task Scheduler Library
- Old browser add-ons
- The target of the shortcut that produces the message
Do not delete random registry entries or system files based only on the DLL name. If an old scheduled task is clearly tied to the uninstalled application, disable it first and confirm that Windows remains stable before removing it.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components as a secondary check
diskfau.dll is not identified as a protected Windows system DLL, so System File Checker is not expected to replace it. Run these commands when Windows itself has other corruption symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or multiple unrelated system errors.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if requested.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt and run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Neither command is a guaranteed replacement for a third-party PC Pitstop DLL. If the same program still reports diskfau.dll, reinstall or remove that program.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC does not reveal what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the program that owns diskfau.dll remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 8: Do not treat a driver update as the primary solution
diskfau.dll is an application and ActiveX component, not an identified hardware driver. Updating graphics, storage, chipset, or motherboard drivers is not a rational first response to this filename.
Only investigate drivers when Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem:

- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.

Do not uninstall a working storage controller or chipset device just because diskfau.dll is missing. If several unrelated devices show errors and manually matching driver versions is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; its free scan identifies findings, while installation requires the full version. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the old application that requested diskfau.dll.
Why downloading diskfau.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download pages cannot reliably prove:
- Who built the file
- Whether it is the correct version
- Whether it matches the requesting application
- Whether it has been modified
- Whether required dependencies are included
- Whether its architecture matches the program
A copied DLL may silence one message while leaving the application broken. It can also place an old ActiveX component in a sensitive Windows directory and create a new security or compatibility problem.

There is no current official standalone replacement download established for diskfau.dll. Use the original application installer or the software vendor’s support channel. If those are unavailable, remove the obsolete application rather than copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Modern 64-bit Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but that does not mean a 32-bit DLL belongs in System32. Windows maintains separate application and system locations, and the correct location is determined by the installer and application design.
The reported 32-bit description for diskfau.dll comes from third-party catalogue data and has not been independently verified against a trusted current binary. Treat it as a reason to avoid manual file placement, not as a reason to experiment with both system folders.
Repair the complete application so Windows receives matching files and registration. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into SysWOW64, System32, or an unrelated program directory.
Prevention
- Keep an installer or backup for any legacy application you still depend on.
- Remove obsolete utilities cleanly instead of deleting their folders manually.
- Review antivirus quarantine before restoring application files.
- Avoid DLL download sites and unofficial “system repair” bundles.
- Keep Windows updated, but do not expect Windows Update to supply this third-party component.
- Record the executable path whenever a DLL error appears.
- Do not run registry cleaners or use
regsvr32without knowing which application requires registration. - If the utility is no longer needed, remove its startup entry and uninstall it rather than preserving an obsolete dependency.
FAQ
Is diskfau.dll a Windows file?
There is no evidence that diskfau.dll is part of Windows. It is associated historically with PC Pitstop’s DiskHealth utility and an Internet Explorer-era ActiveX component.
Is diskfau.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish whether a copy is safe or malicious. Check its path, owning application, digital-signature information, and antivirus detection. A copy in an unexpected folder should not be restored simply because an application reports it missing.
Does Visual C++ Redistributable replace diskfau.dll?
No evidence links this file to Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages. Installing a runtime can help an application built with that runtime, but it does not replace an application-specific PC Pitstop component.
Will SFC restore diskfau.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not normally restore arbitrary third-party application DLLs.
Should I run regsvr32 diskfau.dll?
Only when the original application documentation or installer requires it. Historical ActiveX delivery makes registration possible, but the DLL’s registration exports have not been verified. Reinstalling the complete application is safer.
Why does the error appear only when Windows starts?
A startup entry, scheduled task, shortcut, or leftover service may still reference the old utility. Disable the clearly identified entry, then uninstall the obsolete application.
Can I fix the error by installing DirectX or .NET?
There is no evidence that either package supplies diskfau.dll. Identify and repair the application that requests the file instead.
What if the error remains after reinstalling?
Confirm that the same executable is producing the message. Check antivirus quarantine, Event Viewer, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and the application’s installation path. If the installer is unavailable or incompatible with current Windows, uninstall the obsolete program rather than using an unverified DLL.
