Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better default choice if you want polished traditional kart racing, dependable couch multiplayer and a premium game with optional expansion. Disney Speedstorm is the better fit if you need a free starting point, cross-platform play, Disney and Pixar characters, or a combat-racing system built around character abilities.
The right purchase depends less on which game is “faster” and more on how your group plays: one Nintendo Switch in the same room favors Mario Kart, while friends spread across phones, PCs and different consoles will find Speedstorm much easier to organize.

Disney Speedstorm is a character-driven combat racer
Speedstorm uses Disney and Pixar characters as distinct racers rather than treating them as visual skins. Each racer has upgradeable skills, and races combine drifting and nitro management with attacks or defensive abilities associated with that character. The result is closer to an arcade combat racer than to a pure time-trial kart game.

Tracks are inspired by Disney and Pixar worlds and can include dynamic environmental changes. That means learning a course involves more than memorizing corners: you also need to recognize hazards, opportunities to use a skill and moments when a well-timed boost can change the order. The PlayStation description highlights unique skills, nitro timing, drifting, dynamic environments and customization.
Gameloft describes Speedstorm as a cross-platform free-to-play arcade combat racer. Its September 28, 2023 free-to-play launch announcement also says new Disney and Pixar racers and racetracks are added regularly. The roster and track list are therefore part of an ongoing service rather than a final package delivered once.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the established item-based kart racer
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe follows Nintendo’s familiar formula: accessible steering, drifting and a pool of items that can help a trailing driver or disrupt someone in front. Its identity is built around clear race formats and immediate local competition rather than individual hero abilities.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe core modes documented by Nintendo include Grand Prix, VS Race and Battle. Grand Prix provides structured cups, VS Race lets players set up individual races and rules, and Battle changes the objective from simply reaching the finish line. This variety is a major reason the game works for mixed-skill groups: beginners can participate immediately, while experienced players have room to refine lines, boosts and item strategy.
Cost, subscriptions and monetization
What “free” means in Disney Speedstorm
Disney’s official platform page labels Speedstorm “FREE TO PLAY* ON MOBILE, PC & CONSOLE.” The asterisk matters: the same page warns, “THIS GAME CONTAINS IN-APP PURCHASES, INCLUDING PAID RANDOM ITEMS.” You can begin without buying the game, but the service includes optional spending and an item system that may contain random paid rewards.
That structure lowers the barrier for a household or friend group that wants to try the game. Everyone can download it on a supported device before deciding whether to spend money. It also means the long-term cost is less predictable than a one-time purchase: players who want extra content, cosmetics or progression-related items should review each offer in the game and set a spending limit.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a clearer premium purchase model
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe requires buying the Nintendo Switch game. Its additional content is optional rather than required to access the base game. Nintendo’s official documentation says the Booster Course Pass adds 48 courses and eight additional characters.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

It is also available at no additional charge to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members while that membership remains active. The pass is organized into six waves of eight courses. The membership route is access tied to an active subscription, while a separate purchase remains available for players who do not want that subscription.
There is no equivalent free-to-play item economy in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Your initial cost is higher, but the main game and optional expansion make the spending decision easier to understand in advance.
Platforms and cross-platform play
Speedstorm is the practical choice for mixed-device groups
Speedstorm is listed for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store, and its official platform information also identifies mobile support. Gameloft describes cross-platform play across Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and PC.
That breadth matters if your group does not own the same hardware. A player on a phone or PC can play with someone on a console, provided each device runs a supported version and the relevant account and network requirements are met. Cross-platform support removes the need to buy a second copy of the same console for every participant.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a Switch-only ecosystem
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a Nintendo Switch title. Its advantage is consistency: everyone is using the same hardware, control options and Nintendo network ecosystem. Its limitation is equally clear—friends on PlayStation, Xbox, PC or mobile cannot join the Switch version.

- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
For a household that already owns one Switch, this is rarely a problem. For an online group divided among platforms, it can be the deciding factor in favor of Speedstorm.
How the driving and combat systems differ
Speedstorm rewards ability timing as well as racecraft
Speedstorm asks you to manage three overlapping decisions: how to drive the track, when to build and spend nitro, and when to activate a racer’s skill. Because characters have upgradeable abilities, choosing a racer affects your approach rather than only your appearance.
- Drifting: maintain controlled slides to negotiate corners and build speed.
- Nitro: time boosts so they help on exits, straights or defensive moments instead of being wasted before a hazard.
- Skills: use each character’s ability to attack, defend or create a positional advantage.
- Changing environments: adapt to hazards and route conditions that can alter a familiar line.
This combination gives Speedstorm a more overt combat identity. A player who enjoys selecting a character for a particular ability or interrupting an opponent’s run will find more to manage than in a conventional item-only race.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe emphasizes readable items and repeatable handling
Mario Kart’s item system creates swings in position without assigning a unique power set to every character. Drivers learn a common handling language—accelerate, drift, release a boost and choose when to hold or throw an item—then apply it across Grand Prix, VS and Battle events.
That consistency is valuable for local play. A new player can pick a character and kart, understand the basic objective quickly and start competing. An experienced player can improve through tighter drift timing, better lines and smarter item decisions without needing to learn a separate ability kit for every racer.
Content, progression and longevity
Speedstorm grows as a live service
Gameloft says Speedstorm will continue to receive new Disney and Pixar racers and racetracks on a regular basis. The service model also includes crew and customization elements. In practical terms, the game is designed to change: the available roster, progression goals and cosmetic options can expand after you start playing.

This is useful for players who want an ongoing game with seasonal or recurring reasons to return. It can also make the experience feel less settled than a traditional boxed racer. The value of a new season depends on whether its characters, tracks and rewards appeal to you, and optional purchases remain part of the overall model.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe offers a defined package plus a large expansion
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a stable premium foundation. Nintendo documents 48 additional courses and eight additional characters through the Booster Course Pass, delivered in six waves of eight courses. Once you own the content you want, the available package is easier to plan around than a continuously changing service.
That does not make Mario Kart static in a negative sense. A fixed ruleset and course library can be an advantage for local tournaments, family play and players who want to return months later without relearning a changed economy or roster. The trade-off is that future additions are not part of the ordinary base-game purchase; the documented expansion is a separate decision.

When Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better room-sharing game
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the safer recommendation for a living-room session. Its Grand Prix, VS Race and Battle modes are designed around quick setup, clear rules and repeated rounds. A single Switch can serve as the center of a family or friend gathering, and the premium structure means local players are not navigating a free-to-play store between races.
Nintendo’s online versions of Grand Prix, VS Race and Battle require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. That requirement applies to the online features; it does not change the value of local play for people sharing a console.

Speedstorm supports both local and remote multiplayer and cross-platform play. The PlayStation listing specifies one to four local players and eight online players. Those figures describe that listing’s supported configuration; exact options can vary by mode and platform.

For a remote group, the key benefit is not merely the online player count. It is the ability to combine supported platforms, including mobile, PC and consoles. That makes Speedstorm the more practical first choice when your friends do not share a Nintendo Switch.
Which game fits your priorities?
Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you want:
- A polished, traditional Nintendo kart-racing format.
- Reliable couch multiplayer for family gatherings or local competitions.
- Grand Prix, VS Race and Battle in one consistent ruleset.
- A premium purchase with an optional, clearly priced expansion.
- Nintendo character appeal and a course library that will not depend on live-service updates.
Choose Disney Speedstorm if you want:
- A free starting point before committing money.
- Disney and Pixar characters whose skills affect how they race.
- Cross-platform play between mobile, PC and consoles.
- Combat-racing mechanics involving abilities, nitro and dynamic track environments.
- Regular additions of racers and tracks, plus ongoing customization and crew progression.
Choose based on your group rather than your favorite brand
If four people will usually sit around one television, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s straightforward local structure is the stronger fit. If four friends will play from separate homes on different devices, Speedstorm’s free entry and cross-platform support remove more friction.
If children or occasional players will join, Mario Kart’s shared handling model is easier to teach in a few minutes. If your group enjoys experimenting with builds, character roles and combat tactics, Speedstorm offers more individual identity between racers.

Value over time: the real trade-off
Speedstorm minimizes the initial financial risk. A player can install it, test the driving and invite friends without first purchasing a game. The cost question moves later, into optional items and the possibility of paid random rewards. This is attractive for sampling and for groups that may play only occasionally, but it requires more attention to spending.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe asks for more money at the beginning. In exchange, the core experience is easier to budget: buy the game, then decide whether the $24.99 Booster Course Pass is worth adding. Nintendo Switch Online is an additional consideration for online modes, while local play remains the main reason many households buy the game.
Neither model is universally cheaper. A player who never buys Speedstorm items may spend less than the price of Mario Kart; a player who wants repeated optional purchases may eventually spend more. A Mario Kart owner who wants every documented course and character pays for the game and, if desired, the separate expansion or an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
A practical decision checklist
- List the devices your group actually owns. If they include phones, PCs, PlayStation or Xbox alongside Switch, give Speedstorm’s cross-platform support priority.
- Decide whether local play is the main use. For one Switch shared in the same room, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the more focused choice.
- Set your spending preference. Pick Speedstorm for zero upfront cost with optional purchases, or Mario Kart for a larger initial payment and a more predictable premium structure.
- Choose the driving identity you prefer. Select Speedstorm for hero abilities and combat; select Mario Kart for a common item system and familiar race formats.
- Consider how you want content delivered. Speedstorm adds racers and tracks regularly; Mario Kart offers a defined game expanded by the Booster Course Pass.
- Check online requirements. Speedstorm supports remote and cross-platform play; Mario Kart’s online Grand Prix, VS Race and Battle require Nintendo Switch Online.
Final recommendation
For most Nintendo Switch owners, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better overall kart racer. It delivers the more dependable combination of local multiplayer, recognizable race modes and a premium package whose optional expansion is clearly defined. The Booster Course Pass adds 48 courses and eight characters for players who want more variety.
Disney Speedstorm is the better alternative when its advantages are decisive: free entry, Disney/Pixar character skills, cross-platform multiplayer and a live-service flow of new racers and tracks. It is not simply a cheaper Mario Kart; it is a different kind of combat racer with a different spending model.
In short, buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for a polished Nintendo gathering game. Start with Speedstorm when your group is distributed across platforms or wants to try a Disney-themed ability racer without paying upfront.
