Fortnite is the better choice for anyone who wants to play now. Disney’s much-discussed project is an unnamed Disney–Epic collaboration still in development. Bloomberg reported that it may use an extraction-shooter structure, but the project has no confirmed title, public build, final feature list, price, platforms, or release date. A launch reportedly planned for March 2027 was delayed to an unspecified date in October 2026.
That makes this an uneven comparison: Fortnite is a live, documented game, while the Disney project is a reported concept whose design may change. The sections below separate confirmed information from reporting, explain how the two experiences are expected to differ, and show who should play Fortnite now versus who should simply watch the Disney project.

What “Disney’s new Fortnite game” actually is
There is no released game officially titled Disney’s new Fortnite game. The phrase refers to an unnamed collaboration between Disney and Epic Games. Epic announced in 2024 that the partnership would create an “open, persistent and social universe” connected to Fortnite. Disney also invested $1.5 billion in Epic, making the relationship substantially broader than a single character crossover.
In April 2026, Bloomberg reported that one project in the collaboration was an extraction shooter using Disney characters. According to people familiar with the project, players would fight enemies, gather what they could, and try to reach an extraction point, a structure broadly comparable to games such as Arc Raiders. Internal reviewers reportedly questioned whether the mechanics were sufficiently original.

Epic senior director of global communications Liz Markman disputed that description as a complete picture. She said the extraction-shooter account was “not reflective of the ambitions of the Disney collaboration” and described Epic’s work as “a new games and entertainment universe of Disney experiences.” Those comments matter because they indicate that the reported shooter may be one part of a wider plan, rather than the final identity of the whole Disney–Epic project.
On October 12, 2026, Bloomberg reported that the shooter had been delayed. It had reportedly been targeted for March 2027, but Epic asked the team to adopt an AI-first production process and moved the launch to an unspecified date. Neither the March target nor the new production details should be treated as an official Disney release announcement. As of October 18, 2026, there is no confirmed public launch date.

How the reported Disney extraction shooter could differ from Fortnite
A focused extraction loop rather than a broad platform
The reported project’s defining idea is risk and escape. In an extraction shooter, a session generally asks players to enter a dangerous area, defeat opponents or enemies, collect useful resources, and leave through a designated extraction point. Failure before extraction can make the run costly, while a successful escape preserves the rewards. Bloomberg’s reporting identifies that structure for the Disney project, but it does not establish the exact inventory rules, squad size, map design, progression system or consequences of failure.

The difference is therefore not simply “Disney characters versus Fortnite characters.” It is a possible focused survival-and-escape game versus an established platform with many kinds of play.
Disney characters as the foundation
Reports position Disney characters at the center of the unnamed project. That could mean playable characters, enemies, story figures, equipment themes or several of those roles, but no official roster or mechanic has been published. It is not safe to assume that every Disney, Pixar, Marvel or Star Wars character will appear, that characters will have different combat abilities, or that appearances will be distributed evenly across the brands.

Fortnite already provides a known baseline for Disney-related content. Official collaborations involving Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars operate within Fortnite through skins, events, islands and other experiences. Their presence demonstrates that the partnership can deliver Disney material in a live game, but it does not prove that the unnamed project will use the same art style, monetization, character list or gameplay rules.
A possible new game inside a larger universe
Epic’s official language describes an open, persistent and social universe connected to Fortnite. Markman’s statement about a “new games and entertainment universe of Disney experiences” is broader than the reported extraction-shooter description. The most defensible reading is that Epic and Disney are pursuing connected experiences, while the exact boundary between Fortnite content and a separate Disney-branded game remains unsettled.

Fortnite is available now and is described by Disney Parks as free to play with optional in-game purchases. That removes the largest uncertainty surrounding the Disney project: a player can download Fortnite, choose from its available modes and enter a Disney-related experience without waiting for an unreleased title.
The platform’s breadth also changes the buying decision. Someone interested in Disney characters may find a battle royale match, an official themed island, a Star Wars experience or a creator-built island without purchasing a separate Disney game. The exact modes and events can change over time, as is normal for a live service, but the underlying platform is already operating.

Official cross-franchise experiences
Fortnite’s documented collaborations extend across Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. This is broader than the currently reported Disney project, whose character roster is unknown. Fortnite therefore offers the clearest option for a player who wants to move among several Disney-owned universes today rather than wait for one project’s final creative direction.
Creator-made islands
Epic and Disney have documented creator-built islands and official Star Wars toolkits. These tools allow Fortnite to host experiences made outside the core development team. The unnamed Disney project may eventually support related creation or social features, but no public creator system has been confirmed for it. Fortnite is the only side of this comparison with an established creator ecosystem.
Release status and what the delay means
The reported schedule
Bloomberg reported that the Disney collaboration shooter had been planned for March 2027. On October 12, 2026, the same publication reported that the project had been delayed while Epic asked the team to adopt an AI-first production process. The replacement date was not stated.
A delayed target is not a revised launch date. Until Disney or Epic publishes a date, players should treat March 2027 as obsolete and avoid pre-order claims, countdowns or platform assumptions. There is also no confirmed age rating, supported console list, PC requirement or public test schedule.

Monetization: what is known and what is speculation
Fortnite’s player economy
Disney Parks describes Fortnite as free to play with in-game purchases. Players can therefore begin without paying for access, while optional purchases are part of the live-service model. The available evidence does not justify treating every Fortnite item or event as free, nor does it establish that future Disney experiences will use identical prices or content rules.
V-Bucks are Fortnite’s virtual currency. Their use can include optional cosmetics and other in-game items, but the existence of V-Bucks in Fortnite does not prove that the unreleased Disney project will require them. Epic has not announced that project’s currency, store, battle pass or progression system.
Creator-island revenue sharing
Epic’s creator monetization documentation says developers ordinarily receive 50% of the V-Bucks value generated by sales of in-island items. Epic announced a temporary 100% rate from December 2025 through the end of 2026. The temporary figure applies to the documented creator program and its stated period; it is not a promise that players will receive more currency, that all Fortnite purchases are free, or that the Disney project will use the same split.

Why Fortnite’s economy cannot predict Disney’s pricing
The Disney project may be built within Epic’s broader ecosystem, but a partnership does not automatically transfer every commercial rule. A dedicated game could use a separate purchase model, a shared account wallet, a premium price, free access with cosmetics, or a structure not yet disclosed. Until an official announcement specifies the terms, claims that it “will be free” or “will use the Fortnite shop” are speculation.

Choose Fortnite if you want to play now
Fortnite is the clear choice for immediate access. It has a functioning player ecosystem, documented modes, creator-made islands and active Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars collaborations. You can evaluate its controls, performance and social features yourself instead of relying on a project description.
