Dispatch Fans Suspected a Twist Villain—but AdHoc Says the Story Is More Hopeful

AdHoc says some fans suspected Blonde Blazer was secretly evil, but the developers intended Dispatch to be more hopeful than a familiar hidden-villain story.

Some Dispatch fans suspected Blonde Blazer was secretly evil, AdHoc executive Nick Herman said—but that is a developer’s account of online theories, not proof that most players believed it. Herman and creative director Dennis Lenart said the game was meant to be more earnest and optimistic than a story where a seemingly kind character turns out to be the big bad.

Why did Dispatch fans suspect Blonde Blazer?

In an interview reported by Popverse, Herman said, “The internet was basically convinced, you know, she was evil.” He described the suspicion as an expectation of a familiar twist: “There’s always, like, a twist of, like, this nice lady, you know, the big bad in the end.”

That wording captures the developers’ impression of online discussion. It does not establish how widespread the theory was, which posts drove it, or whether a measured share of the audience agreed. No fan survey or statistic quantifying belief in the theory is available in the cited reporting.

Is Blonde Blazer evil in Dispatch?

The developers’ explanation is that Dispatch was intended to be more optimistic and hopeful, with characters largely “exactly who they say they are,” rather than structured around a hidden-villain reveal for a seemingly nice character. That is an account of the story’s intended tone, not a claim that the game has no revelations or surprises.

It also helps to distinguish a theory from evidence. A character’s established role and behavior can make a betrayal plausible; that alone does not show that a story is foreshadowing a secret villain. Herman’s comments explain why the theory surprised the developers, but do not establish that online suspicion was correct.

How the Invisigal revelation is different

Dispatch does contain a betrayal or revelation involving Invisigal. Herman’s distinction is that Invisigal is already identified as a villainous thief, so the possibility of betrayal is legible from her established role. That differs from a surprise in which a character presented as kind is revealed to have been secretly evil all along.

Why episodic releases encouraged theories

Dispatch is a choice-driven superhero workplace comedy set in modern Los Angeles. After Robert Robertson—also known as Mecha Man—loses his mech suit, he takes a job at a superhero dispatch center, manages a team of former supervillains, navigates workplace relationships, and works toward rebuilding the suit. AdHoc described the game as a workplace comedy in which choices matter; see the studio’s game description.

Because the story arrived episodically, players had time between releases to discuss clues and speculate. Lenart described “reading into things, fan theories online” as “kind of a fun part of the experience.” The developers also said that player reactions sometimes went beyond what they expected. That context helps explain why a familiar twist theory might gather attention without showing that it reflects the story’s actual direction.

What the twist-villain discussion does—and doesn’t—tell us

  • It tells us: Herman said online fans suspected Blonde Blazer had hidden motives or was evil, and the developers viewed that expectation through the lens of a familiar “nice character is secretly the big bad” twist.
  • It does not tell us: what percentage of players held the theory, how broadly it circulated, or whether the theory was accurate. The interview report does not provide a fan survey or measured audience share.
  • It does not mean: that Dispatch has no twists. The Invisigal betrayal is a separate kind of revelation, grounded in a character already presented as a villainous thief.
