If Windows shows “The program can’t start because dispci.dll is missing from your computer,” the file involved is dispci.dll. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Microsoft Display Class Installer, associated with the Display adapters device class.

Which fix applies to you

Use the path that matches what you see:

  • Windows itself or Device Manager reports the error: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first.
  • The problem started after Windows Update: Install pending updates, restart, then run DISM and SFC.
  • It began after a graphics-driver installation: Update, roll back, or reinstall the display driver through Device Manager.
  • Only one game or application fails: Repair or reinstall that program from its official installer after checking Windows.
  • Your antivirus quarantined the file: Review Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The file exists but will not load: Check its location, digital signature, architecture, and dependencies. “Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than dispci.dll itself.
  • The file is in a temporary or application folder: Treat that as suspicious and scan the system rather than copying in a replacement.

Do not begin by downloading dispci.dll. Windows owns this component, so Windows servicing and recovery are the safest sources.

What dispci.dll is and where it belongs

dispci.dll is the Microsoft Display Class Installer. Its known exported function is DisplayClassInstaller, which fits its role in installing or managing devices in the Display adapters class. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, .NET component, or ordinary game DLL.

On a normal 64-bit installation, the 64-bit copy belongs under:

  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.

  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
%WINDIR%System32

Windows also maintains 32-bit system components under:

%WINDIR%SysWOW64

A 32-bit application may use the 32-bit system copy, while a 64-bit process uses the 64-bit copy. Do not replace one architecture with the other. Windows file-system redirection determines which system directory a process sees; Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

To search the usual locations, open Command Prompt and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
where /r "%windir%System32" dispci.dll
where /r "%windir%SysWOW64" dispci.dll

If a copy is found, right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. A genuine system copy should identify Microsoft as the signer. An unexpected folder, missing signature, or different publisher is a security warning.

Exact versions vary by Windows release, architecture, and servicing level. An old file inventory is not a safe replacement source for a current installation.

Check the error and recent changes

The wording can vary:

  • “The program can’t start because dispci.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because dispci.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting dispci.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading dispci.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “dispci.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages do not identify the root cause by themselves. Note whether the message appears during Windows startup, while opening Device Manager, when launching a particular game, or in another application.

Also consider what changed immediately beforehand:

  • Windows Update
  • A graphics-driver installation or rollback
  • Cleanup or optimization software
  • Antivirus detection or quarantine
  • Malware removal
  • A newly installed application or game

That timing helps choose the next branch, but the filename alone cannot prove which change caused the failure.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

A missing or damaged protected system file is the most direct explanation for a genuine dispci.dll failure. DISM repairs the Windows component source, and SFC uses that repaired source to replace protected files.

  1. Save your work and restart Windows.
  2. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
  2. After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected program or device again.

A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears after restarting, the repair worked.

If DISM reports that the repair source cannot be found, run Windows Update first and retry. Microsoft documents this procedure in its System File Checker guidance.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes difficult to track, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the issue and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remains the direct built-in repair path.

Use a matching repair source if DISM still fails

An administrator can specify a valid Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a genuine, matching Windows repair source. The source must correspond appropriately to the installed Windows version and architecture. Do not point DISM at a random downloaded DLL or an unrelated Windows installation.

If DISM and SFC still cannot repair the component, record their exact result messages before moving to recovery options.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates or use Windows 11 repair reinstall

An interrupted update can leave the component store or display setup files inconsistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Run DISM followed by SFC again using the commands above.

On Windows 11, you may also see a repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Choose Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.

This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving personal files, applications, and settings. The option is not present on every installation. Microsoft describes it in its Windows repair reinstall guidance.

Fix 3: Update, roll back, or reinstall the display driver

dispci.dll is part of Windows display-device installation. It is not the graphics vendor’s driver itself, but a damaged driver installation can trigger related failures.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click your graphics device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

  1. Return to Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
  2. Right-click the graphics device and select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
  5. Restart Windows.

If updating or rolling back does not help:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the graphics device.
  2. Choose Uninstall device.
  3. Confirm the removal. Do not select an option to remove unrelated software.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Allow Windows to reinstall the device, or install the driver from the official PC or GPU manufacturer’s site.

Match the driver to your Windows version, system architecture, and exact graphics hardware. Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance covers updating, rollback, and reinstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When hunting through multiple graphics-driver packages is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the free scan shows what is wrong, while installation through the full version completes the repair. It is optional, and the official PC or GPU manufacturer remains the correct source for a manual driver installation.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed a damaged or suspicious file, or it may have made a false-positive decision.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and type Windows Security.
  2. Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries around the time the error began.
  5. Open a matching detection to see its path and action.
  6. Do not restore the file solely because its name is dispci.dll.

Restore only if the file was located in the expected Windows directory, has a valid Microsoft digital signature, and a current scan supports the false-positive conclusion. If it was in a temporary folder or had no valid signature, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Microsoft explains quarantine and restore behavior in Protection History.

For suspected tampering, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Repair Windows after the scan rather than restoring an unverified file.

Fix 5: Repair only the application that reports the error

If Windows and Device Manager work normally and one application alone displays the message, the application may have a damaged installation or an improperly bundled copy.

Try these steps:

  1. Open the application’s launcher or installer.
  2. Choose Repair, Verify files, or the equivalent maintenance option.
  3. Restart Windows after the repair.
  4. If no repair option exists, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  5. Select the affected application.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available, then Repair.
  7. If the error remains, uninstall the application.
  8. Download and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.

A game launcher’s file verification repairs files owned by that game. It does not replace a protected copy under %WINDIR%System32.

Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a targeted fix for dispci.dll. Use those repairs only when the application separately reports a missing or damaged runtime component.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is appropriate when the failure began after a driver, update, cleanup utility, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
  6. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
  7. Let Windows restart and complete the process.

System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. Microsoft provides details in its System Restore documentation.

Why regsvr32 and manual DLL copying are wrong here

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The known export for dispci.dll is DisplayClassInstaller, not DllRegisterServer. Running:

regsvr32 dispci.dll

is therefore not a supported repair and may produce an entry-point error.

Avoid random DLL download and copy instructions. They can provide the wrong Windows build, wrong architecture, invalid signature, or malware, and they do not repair the component store or the dependency that may actually be missing. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows recovery, or a matching Microsoft repair source instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If nothing has worked

Keep the exact DISM and SFC result messages, the full error wording, the program that displays it, the file path found by where, and the result of the digital-signature check.

Then proceed in this order:

  1. Try a valid matching DISM repair source.
  2. Use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists.
  3. Use the Windows 11 repair reinstall option when available.
  4. Repair or reinstall the affected application if only it fails.
  5. Back up personal files before considering a full Windows reset or reinstall.

FAQ

Does dispci.dll have a 32-bit version?

Windows can provide architecture-specific copies. A 32-bit application may use the copy exposed through %WINDIR%SysWOW64, while 64-bit processes normally use %WINDIR%System32 on 64-bit Windows. Do not download or substitute one architecture for another.

Should I reinstall my graphics driver?

Yes, if the problem began during a graphics-driver installation or Device Manager reports a display-device problem. Use Device Manager first, then the official hardware manufacturer’s driver if necessary. Still run DISM and SFC for a system-file error.

Is dispci.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?

No. It is a Windows Display Class Installer component. Reinstalling those runtimes is not a direct fix unless the application reports a separate runtime error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?

The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by dispci.dll or the calling program. Check Windows integrity, display drivers, architecture, and the application installation rather than assuming the named file is absent.

Can I restore it from antivirus quarantine?

Only after checking its path, Microsoft signature, and the system’s scan results. A matching filename alone is not proof that the quarantined file is safe.
