Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, answer these questions:
- Which program displays the error? The filename alone does not identify the executable. It should be an older Adobe Audition installation or a related Adobe component.
- When did the problem begin? Note whether it followed an Audition reinstall, language change, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, migration to another PC, or restoration of an old drive.
- Is the installation old or current? Audition 1.x–3.x were Windows-only applications. Current Creative Cloud Audition is a different installation model.
- Does the message name only
distort.dll, or another missing file too? A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can indicate a dependency ofdistort.dll, not necessarily the DLL itself. - Is the application 32-bit? Public file records describe
distort.dllas a Win32 file. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its components must match the application.
distort.dll is identified in public file records as the Adobe Audition Language Module, associated with the Adobe Audition German Language Module. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or normal Visual C++ redistributable. The safest fix is to restore the complete Adobe Audition installation that supplied it, not to copy a loose DLL into a Windows folder.
What the distort.dll error means
The filename is associated with an Adobe Audition language component attributed to Adobe Systems, Incorporated. Public records report it as a 32-bit DLL and associate it with the Audition 1.5 era, but those details are third-party metadata rather than an authoritative current Adobe file manifest.
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because distort.dll was not found.”
- “The file distort.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: distort.dll.”
- “Error loading distort.dll.”
- “The program cannot start because distort.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “distort.dll could not be located.”
The wording depends on the application loader and the condition that caused the failure. It does not prove that Windows originally installed the file.

| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or damaged Audition installation | Uninstall and reinstall the matching Audition release |
| German language component removed | Reinstall Audition with the original language selection |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection History before restoring anything |

| A dependency is missing | Identify the executable and the full error message |
| Wider Windows corruption | Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC as secondary checks |
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the matching Adobe Audition installation
This is the most likely solution and the one least likely to create a second problem.
If Audition is installed and has an uninstaller
- Save your Audition projects and close all Adobe applications.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for Adobe Audition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it, then choose Uninstall.
- Complete the Adobe uninstaller.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Audition again using the original licensed Adobe installer or the supported Adobe installation method available for that product.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the normal launch fails.
- Select the same language used by the original installation, particularly if the error appeared after changing from or to German.
- Restart again and launch Audition from its normal shortcut.
Do not uninstall first if you have an older installation that is difficult to replace and you still have access to its original media. Check that media and preserve any license information before removing the program.
If this is a Creative Cloud installation
Current Creative Cloud applications are installed and managed through the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Find Audition.
- Select the menu beside Audition.
- Choose Uninstall.
- If offered, choose whether to keep preferences.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again.
- Before reinstalling, open your account menu and choose Preferences.
- Open Apps or Language, depending on the Creative Cloud version.
- Set the intended default installation language.
- Return to Apps and install Audition again.
Adobe requires an application reinstall when changing the language of an already-installed Creative Cloud application. If the error belongs to an old standalone Audition release, current Creative Cloud may not provide that exact installer. In that situation, use the original licensed installation media or Adobe account resources associated with the older product.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- Audition opens without the
distort.dllmessage. - The language-related component loads normally.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
- The program can open an existing project without reporting another missing module.
If the same message remains, continue with the quarantine check before attempting system repairs.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old application component. This is especially possible after moving an older program to a newer Windows installation.
Do not immediately restore a quarantined file. First confirm that it came from a complete, trusted Adobe installation.

- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection related to Audition or
distort.dll. - Note the detected path, detection name, and action taken.
- If the path points to the expected Adobe Audition installation and you have confirmed the installer is genuine, review the available action.
- If the file appeared unexpectedly, came from an untrusted source, or was found outside the Audition installation, leave it quarantined.
- Run a full Windows Security scan.
- Reinstall Audition from trusted installation media instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
Restore a file only when you can establish that it came from an intact, licensed Adobe installation and the detection is demonstrably false. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the device.
After restoring a trusted file, launch Audition. If the file is quarantined again, the detection may be valid, the installation may be damaged, or another component may be injecting into the program. Stop restoring it repeatedly and replace the complete Audition installation.
Fix 3: Check the application folder and architecture
A 32-bit application normally loads its private DLLs from its own installation directory or an Adobe-managed component directory. It does not follow the rule that every DLL belongs in C:WindowsSystem32.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32contains 64-bit system components.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows system components.- Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for third-party application DLLs.
Copying distort.dll into either directory can cause the wrong program to load the wrong version. It can also hide the real installation problem and create conflicts when another application searches for the same filename.
To inspect the installation:
- Right-click the Audition shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the application executable and its Adobe component folders.
- Do not download or copy a replacement file into that directory unless it came from the complete Adobe installer.
- If the file is absent, reinstall Audition.
- If the file is present but the error remains, record the exact executable path and continue to the dependency checks below.
The reported file metadata describes distort.dll as 32-bit, but the exact supported release, install path, and file hash are not confirmed by an accessible Adobe manifest. Treat third-party version and size information as identification clues, not installation instructions.

A “module could not be found” message can mean that Windows found distort.dll but could not load something that it depends on.
First identify the caller:
- Reproduce the error.
- Read the title bar and the complete message.
- Note the program name and path if shown.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Look for the Adobe Audition executable while launching it.
- Right-click the process if it appears and select Open file location.
- Record whether it is the old standalone Audition executable or a current Creative Cloud installation.
If another DLL is named, repair that component according to its own vendor documentation. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because distort.dll is missing. Those packages are appropriate only when the error names a related runtime file or the application specifically requires that runtime.

Fix 5: Do not register distort.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It works with DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A language or application module may not provide that entry point.
Running this command:
regsvr32 distort.dll
may produce an entry-point error and will not repair a missing Adobe installation. It can also register a file from the wrong directory if you are working from an unsafe location.
Only register this file if Adobe’s own documentation for the exact Audition release explicitly instructs you to do so. For the normal distort.dll error, reinstalling Audition is the appropriate action.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows system repair tools are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they normally cannot recreate an Adobe-owned DLL.
Run Windows Update first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Audition again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Audition. If both commands complete without finding a problem, that further supports the conclusion that the missing file belongs to the Adobe installation rather than Windows.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not normally restore distort.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRunning these checks manually can mean hunting through update history and interpreting several repair results. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it finds before its full version performs repairs. It is optional, and reinstalling Adobe Audition remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Reinstall or update related drivers only when the evidence points there
A display, audio, or chipset driver is not the normal source of a missing Adobe language module. Consider a driver repair only if Audition began failing immediately after a driver change, several audio applications fail, or Device Manager reports a problem.
Rank #4
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by the device or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test Audition.
Do not remove a working driver solely because distort.dll is missing. If the error names a driver file or Audition fails alongside other audio software, install the correct driver for the exact hardware and Windows edition.
Finding the right driver manually can involve checking hardware IDs, manufacturer pages, and multiple package versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, with driver installation handled by its full version. It is optional and does not replace the need to reinstall the Adobe application when Audition itself is missing distort.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore if the failure has a clear starting point
System Restore can help when the file worked recently and a restore point predates an uninstall, cleanup, or software change. It is not a substitute for obtaining the correct Adobe installer.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the
distort.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
Test Audition after Windows starts. If the error remains, restore the system forward if necessary and reinstall Audition instead.
Fix 9: Repair Creative Cloud if several Adobe applications fail
If Photoshop, Premiere, Audition, or other Adobe applications are also damaged, the problem may involve Creative Cloud rather than one Audition file.
- Close Adobe applications.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall.
- If Adobe offers Repair, use Repair first.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud and test Audition.
- If repair fails, reinstall Creative Cloud using Adobe’s supported installer.
- For persistent corrupted installations, use Adobe’s official Cleaner Tool instructions carefully and reinstall the required applications.
Do not use the Cleaner Tool as the first response to one missing language DLL. Reserve it for a damaged Creative Cloud installation that ordinary repair and reinstall steps do not correct.

Do not replace the missing file from a random download page. A loose DLL may contain malware, may be the wrong architecture, may belong to another release, or may omit dependencies that the application also needs. A matching filename is not proof of authenticity.
Use this order instead:
- Search your Adobe account for the licensed product and available installers.
- Check the original Adobe media or a verified backup.
- Check whether the old computer still has a complete, working installation.
- Preserve project files, presets, and license information before making changes.
- Contact Adobe support about legitimate access to the product.
- If the old release cannot be obtained, migrate projects to a supported Audition version where practical.
Avoid copying a DLL from another computer unless you are restoring the entire application through a verified backup and the hardware, language, and application version match. Even then, a complete reinstall is safer.

Final diagnostic checklist
Before escalating the problem, confirm:
- The error names
distort.dllexactly. - You know which executable displays it.
- The failure began after a specific installation, removal, quarantine, or migration event.
- Audition’s language matches the original installation.
- Windows Security Protection History was reviewed.
- The DLL was not copied into
System32orSysWOW64. - Audition was repaired or reinstalled from trusted Adobe media.
- Any additional missing dependency was recorded.
- DISM and SFC were used only as secondary Windows checks.
- The application architecture is compatible with the installed components.
FAQ
Is distort.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with an Adobe Audition language component and should not normally be placed in a Windows system directory.
Which Adobe Audition version uses distort.dll?
Public records strongly associate it with an older Adobe Audition German language component, reportedly from the Audition 1.5 era. The exact release, official install path, and current supported package are not confirmed by an accessible Adobe manifest.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I download distort.dll separately?
No. Obtain the complete Audition installation from trusted Adobe media or a verified licensed backup. A loose replacement can be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?
Usually not. Install or repair a runtime only when the error names a runtime file or the affected Adobe release documents that dependency.
Should I run regsvr32 distort.dll?
No, not as a general repair. This type of application language module may not expose the registration entry point that regsvr32 requires.
Why did SFC not restore the file?
SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not normally restore third-party Adobe files.

Can 32-bit Audition run on 64-bit Windows?
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its DLLs must match the application and remain in the application’s own installation structure. The reported metadata for distort.dll describes it as a 32-bit file.
What if reinstalling Audition does not help?
Identify the exact executable, reread the full error, inspect Protection History, check whether another dependency is named, and review the application installation log and Windows Event Viewer. If multiple Adobe applications fail, repair Creative Cloud rather than replacing individual DLLs.
