“The program can’t start because comutil.dll is missing from your computer” means Windows cannot load a required application file. The comutil.dll error usually points to MultiSIM V6, older Electronics Workbench software, or a related NI Circuit Design Suite installation, not to Windows itself.
Which fix applies to you
Choose the situation that matches what happened:
- The error appeared when launching MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench: repair the application from its original installer.
- The error began after an uninstall, update, cleanup, or failed reinstall: reinstall the complete application rather than replacing one DLL.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists beside the program but Windows still reports it as missing: a dependent DLL, damaged installation, permissions issue, or architecture mismatch may be involved.
- The program is very old and fails on Windows 11 or Windows 10: repair it first, then investigate compatibility and licensing.
- Several Windows programs also report missing or damaged files: run DISM and SFC as secondary Windows diagnostics.
- You downloaded
comutil.dllfrom a random website: delete that copy and use the application’s legitimate installer instead.
Do not begin by copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. comutil.dll is an application file associated with MultiSIM V6, and there is no verified official standalone Microsoft download for it.
What is comutil.dll
comutil.dll is described as “SnapIns Module” and is associated with MultiSIM V6, developed by Interactive Image Technology Ltd. Historical NI information also connects the file with the core components of older NI Circuit Design Suite installations.
That makes this an application-repair problem. Windows does not normally provide comutil.dll as a protected operating-system component, so Windows File Protection will not normally recreate it.

The exact installation folder varies by product version and installation method. Look for the file beside the application executable or in the application’s own program directory, not in a Windows system folder.
Reported messages include:
- “This application failed to start because comutil.dll was not found.”
- “The file comutil.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: comutil.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading comutil.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load comutil.dll.”
The wording can be misleading. “The specified module could not be found” may mean that comutil.dll itself is absent, or that another DLL required by it is absent.
Fix 1: Repair MultiSIM or NI Circuit Design Suite
This is the safest and most likely solution.
Before repairing
- Close MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, and any NI installer windows.
- Back up circuit designs, custom libraries, templates, and exported project files.
- Make sure you have the original installer, licensed installation media, or access to the official NI download portal.
- If the product was installed by an organization, ask the administrator for the correct installer and entitlement.
Do not use a similarly named DLL from another computer unless it came from the same verified application installer. Files from different releases may not be interchangeable.
Repair through Installed apps
Windows 11:
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Search for MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, NI Circuit Design Suite, or a similarly named product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the application.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what Windows displays.
- If the vendor maintenance program opens, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow the installer to restore missing core files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application normally.
Windows 10:
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select the MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, or NI Circuit Design Suite entry.
- Choose Modify or Uninstall.
- Select Repair in the vendor’s maintenance window.
- Restart the computer after the repair finishes.
- Try the application again.
The names and available maintenance options differ between old installers. If there is no Repair option, use the installer’s Change, Modify, or complete reinstall option.
If repair is unavailable
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps and locate the affected application.
- Uninstall it only after backing up your projects and confirming that you have the installer or licensed media.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Show more options if necessary.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Install the complete product, including its core components.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If you need an older NI release, access may depend on your registered product, perpetual entitlement, subscription, or service agreement. The correct source is NI’s official software download and account system, not an isolated DLL archive.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- the application opens without the
comutil.dllmessage; - the file is present in the application’s installation directory;
- the program can open or create a project;
- Windows Security does not immediately remove the file again.
If the error returns immediately, check quarantine before repeating the reinstall.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove an application DLL. A historical report associated comutil.dll with a detection caused by its filename, but that does not prove that every current detection is a false positive.
Review the actual detection before restoring anything.

- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
comutil.dll. - Record:
- the file path;
- the threat name;
- the detection date;
- the publisher or origin shown by Windows Security;
- whether the file came from the legitimate MultiSIM installation directory.
- If the detection identifies malware or the path is a temporary folder, Downloads folder, or unknown location, do not restore the file.
- Run a full scan and reinstall the application from its legitimate installer.
Only consider Restore or Allow on device when all of the following are true:

- the file came from a legitimate MultiSIM or NI installation;
- the installer was obtained from a trusted source;
- the application’s installation has not been tampered with;
- the detection is consistent with a false positive;
- an updated security scan does not find broader malware.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk. If the file disappears again after restoration, stop restoring it and investigate the installation and security detection.
Fix 3: Confirm the requesting application and file location
Sometimes a shortcut, scheduled task, or old program entry launches an application that is no longer installed correctly.
Find the program named in the error
- Read the complete error dialog.
- Note the executable name if it is shown.
- Right-click the shortcut that launches the program.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Use Open File Location if available.
- Confirm whether the target belongs to MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, or NI Circuit Design Suite.
If the shortcut points to a deleted drive, old backup, removable disk, or network location, remove the shortcut and launch the repaired application from its current installation directory.

Check for the DLL beside the application
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Search that folder for
comutil.dll. - If it is missing, repair or reinstall the application.
- If it is present, do not immediately copy it elsewhere.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
- Confirm that its location matches the legitimate application directory.
A file being present does not guarantee that it can load. Its dependencies may be missing, the file may be damaged, or the application may be loading a different copy.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Historical metadata identifies this file as a 32-bit application DLL, although third-party file listings have disagreed about its architecture. Treat the original installer and the application’s own files as authoritative.
A 32-bit MultiSIM application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the matching 32-bit application components. Installing a 64-bit file with the same name is not a valid substitute.
Check whether Windows is 64-bit
- Right-click Start.
- Select System.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Check the application architecture
The program’s installer, documentation, or executable properties may identify its architecture. If that information is unavailable, use the original product installer rather than guessing.
Do not:
- copy the file into both system folders;
- replace a 32-bit application DLL with a 64-bit DLL;
- use
System32as a general-purpose location for application files; - use
SysWOW64as a general-purpose location for application files.
The correct location is normally the application’s own directory or another path defined by its installer.
Fix 5: Repair the application’s dependent components
If comutil.dll exists but Windows reports “specified module could not be found,” a dependency may be missing.

Start with the application installer. It knows which files and components belong to that release.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11 or Apps and Features in Windows 10.
- Select the MultiSIM or NI product.
- Choose Modify or Change.
- Select Repair if available.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the complete application.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
Do not install random Visual C++ packages based only on the error wording. The required runtime architecture and version depend on how the application was built, and the exact runtime required by this historical file is not established here.

If the installer reports a missing prerequisite, use the prerequisite supplied by the official application installer or documented by its vendor.
Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker for broader Windows corruption
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they are not direct replacements for a missing MultiSIM DLL.
Use them when other Windows features are failing, Windows updates are damaged, or multiple unrelated system files show errors.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Do not close the window while it is working.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward, then test MultiSIM.

Fix 7: Install pending Windows updates
Updates will not normally supply comutil.dll, but they can resolve compatibility and installer problems.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test MultiSIM after the system is fully restarted.
Do not treat Windows Update as a replacement for the application’s original installer.

Fix 8: Reinstall or update related drivers only when the application needs them
MultiSIM may interact with hardware, instruments, interfaces, or older device drivers. A driver problem usually produces a separate device or hardware error, not a missing comutil.dll message, so update drivers only when Device Manager or the application identifies a related device problem.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Ports, Sound, video and game controllers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Other devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Use Driver and then Update Driver if an update is appropriate.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For an old instrument or interface, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer or the application’s official installation media. Do not use a driver merely because its name resembles comutil.dll.
Manually identifying the correct driver can mean hunting through hardware IDs, old installer packages, and Windows compatibility details. Compatibility mode can help an old application launch, but it cannot recreate a missing DLL.
- Right-click the MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the application’s documentation or previous configuration supports it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only when required by the application.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
If the comutil.dll error remains, return to application repair or reinstall. Compatibility mode is not a replacement for a complete installation.
Do not register comutil.dll with regsvr32
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 comutil.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration procedures such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that this particular application DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
Registering the file can produce another error, change nothing, or distract from the real problem. Use registration only when the application vendor explicitly instructs you to do so and confirms that the DLL supports the required registration entry point.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites create several problems:
- the file may contain malware;
- the architecture may be wrong;
- the file may belong to a different product release;
- the file may have been modified;
- Windows may continue reporting a missing dependency;
- replacing one file can leave the installation internally inconsistent.
There is no verified official standalone Microsoft or NI download for comutil.dll. Use the original licensed MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, or NI Circuit Design Suite installer instead.
Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If MultiSIM worked until a recent cleanup, update, driver installation, or software change, System Restore may return the system configuration to an earlier state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or restored.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can roll back installed programs and system settings. After the restore, repair MultiSIM if the DLL error remains.

If the error still appears
Collect these details before contacting the application vendor or an administrator:
- the complete error text;
- the executable that displays it;
- the application name and version;
- the Windows version;
- the application installation path;
- whether
comutil.dllexists in that folder; - the Windows Security detection name and path;
- whether the error occurs during launch or installation;
- whether repair or reinstall completes successfully;
- any Event Viewer error shown at the same time.
To open relevant logs:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Check Application immediately after reproducing the error.
- Record the faulting application and module names without deleting the logs.
If only one Windows user profile fails, test the program from another profile. A profile-specific permission, path, or environment setting may be involved. If the application is installed on a network or removable drive, reinstall or restore it to a local drive and test again.

Is comutil.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available evidence associates it with MultiSIM V6 and older Electronics Workbench or NI Circuit Design Suite software. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
