If you mean the original Dark Souls, yes: the Divine upgrade path adds Faith scaling. It also changes the weapon’s damage profile by adding magic damage and altering its physical scaling. A Divine weapon therefore does not turn every point of attack rating into Faith-based damage, and converting a weapon is not automatically an upgrade for every build.
The practical answer is to inspect the exact weapon, upgrade level, stat grades and damage split. Divine is a Faith-oriented path with a special use against Catacombs skeletons, while Magic and Enchanted are Intelligence-oriented paths. Occult is a separate Faith path that player references generally describe as more Faith-focused. The rules differ between games, so “divine weapon” by itself is not enough information to answer for an unspecified RPG.

What Divine means in Dark Souls
In Dark Souls, Divine is an upgrade path applied through the weapon-upgrade system, not a universal weapon category shared by every game. The Dark Souls Wiki weapon-upgrade reference lists Divine among the game’s distinct upgrade routes. Community guides and player discussions associate that route with Faith scaling, but the resulting weapon is still governed by its own base damage, scaling grades and upgrade level.
That distinction matters because a weapon’s name does not tell you how its attack rating is calculated. A sword upgraded along a Divine route can have a Faith contribution and a magic-damage component, yet still retain a physical component that responds to different stats. Two Divine weapons at the same reinforcement level can therefore perform differently on the same character.

Faith scaling is not the same as “all Faith damage”
Scaling describes how a character stat contributes to a weapon’s attack rating. Damage type describes the kind of damage the hit delivers and which defenses absorb it. Divine upgrades affect both sides of that equation: community references describe added magic damage, Faith scaling and changed physical scaling.
The result is split damage. One attack can contain physical and magic portions, with each portion facing the relevant defenses. A higher Faith score may improve the Faith-linked part of the weapon’s rating, but it does not erase the physical portion or guarantee a larger final hit against every enemy. An enemy with strong magic resistance can reduce the benefit of the added component even when the character has excellent Faith.
This is why “it scales with Faith” should be read as “Faith contributes to this weapon’s attack rating,” not “Faith multiplies the weapon’s entire displayed damage.” The exact grades and values vary by weapon and reinforcement level; the available references do not establish one universal formula or breakpoint for every weapon, platform or version.

How the main upgrade paths differ
| Upgrade path | Stat emphasis described by community references | Damage or utility characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Divine | Faith scaling, with the weapon’s previous physical scaling changed | Adds magic damage and is associated with stopping Catacombs skeletons from being raised; split damage can be less effective as a general-purpose choice |
| Occult | Faith scaling, generally described as more Faith-focused than Divine | Separate path from Divine; it also uses a split-damage profile and cannot receive the usual weapon buffs according to player-authored guides |
| Magic or Enchanted | Intelligence-oriented rather than Faith-oriented | Choosing one of these paths explains why a Faith character may see no Faith scaling, even when green titanite or a similar material is involved |
The comparisons above summarize player guides and discussions, not an official developer mechanics document. For a decision on your character, use the displayed requirements and scaling on the specific weapon rather than assuming every weapon follows the same pattern.
Divine
Divine is the path most directly associated with a Faith-based cleric build. Its conversion adds a magic component and changes the weapon’s physical scaling, so the pre-upgrade weapon’s stat behavior cannot simply be carried over. A physical weapon that was strong for Strength or Dexterity may become a different proposition after conversion, even if Faith is now contributing.

Occult
Occult is not another name for Divine. Player guides describe both as Faith paths but commonly characterize Occult as placing greater emphasis on Faith. Discussions also show disagreement over which path is better at particular stat spreads and on particular weapons. There is no evidence for a universal “switch to Occult at this Faith value” rule; compare the weapon’s actual attack-rating components and your intended enemies.
Magic and Enchanted
Magic and Enchanted are the source of a frequent cleric-build mistake. A player discussion describes someone making a Magic or Enchanted Claymore, then wondering why it had no Faith scaling. Those paths are associated with Intelligence, while Divine and Occult are the Faith-oriented alternatives. Sharing an upgrade material does not make the paths interchangeable.
Why a Divine weapon can show less total damage
Split damage creates two separate defensive checks instead of one concentrated physical hit. If an enemy’s defenses reduce both portions, the displayed attack rating can overstate the damage that reaches the target compared with a single-type weapon of similar rating. Community weapon guides therefore caution that Divine weapons can be less effective as general-purpose choices than normal physical weapons.
That is a trade-off, not a statement that Divine is always weak. The path can be worthwhile when Faith contributes a meaningful amount, when the target is poorly defended against the weapon’s damage profile, or when Divine’s special utility matters. Conversely, a character that needs maximum physical damage or frequent temporary buffs may prefer to keep a standard path.
Divine’s Catacombs utility
Community references identify a specific reason to carry a Divine weapon in the Catacombs: killing certain skeletons with Divine damage prevents them from being raised again. This utility is situational. It does not make every Divine weapon the best weapon for the entire area, and it does not remove the need to deal with the necromancers that influence those encounters.

A practical approach is to keep a Divine weapon as an area tool if you value the skeleton-control effect, while using a different weapon for enemies where split damage performs worse. The choice can be about utility rather than the highest character-sheet number.

Player-authored guides state that Divine and Occult weapons cannot be buffed with the usual temporary weapon-buff spells or resins. That restriction belongs in the same calculation as Faith scaling and damage type. A buff-oriented build may gain more from a standard physical weapon that preserves buff access, even if its unbuffed attack rating looks lower than a converted Divine or Occult weapon.
Check the interaction in your intended build before spending upgrade materials. If your plan depends on applying a temporary elemental or magical coating before a boss, a Faith path that disables those buffs changes the plan rather than merely changing the stat letters.
How to check whether your weapon benefits from Faith
- Confirm the game and version. The answer here concerns Dark Souls; a “divine” item in another RPG may use entirely different rules.
- Identify the actual upgrade path. At the blacksmith or upgrade menu, verify that the weapon is on Divine or Occult. If it says Magic or Enchanted, you are looking at an Intelligence-oriented path instead.
- Read the attribute-scaling panel. Look specifically for the Faith grade and for changes to Strength, Dexterity or other physical scaling after conversion.
- Separate the damage components. Record the physical and magic values rather than treating the headline attack rating as one damage type.
- Compare the same reinforcement level. A Divine weapon at one upgrade level is not a fair comparison with a normal or Occult weapon at another. Check the exact levels available to your character.
- Test the build’s constraints. Decide whether Catacombs utility matters and whether losing access to normal weapon buffs would undermine your plan.
- Keep a backup option when needed. A standard physical weapon can cover enemies or situations where split damage is inefficient, while the Divine weapon handles its specialist role.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I am a cleric, so any magic-looking path should scale with Faith.”
Not in Dark Souls. Magic and Enchanted are associated with Intelligence. Inspect the scaling letters and upgrade name before investing more materials. If the weapon is already on the wrong route, compare the cost of reverting or replacing it with the cost of continuing that path.
“A higher Faith stat guarantees higher final damage.”
Faith can raise the Faith-linked part of a Divine or Occult weapon’s attack rating, but total damage still depends on the physical component, magic component, enemy defenses and the weapon’s own scaling. Use the complete attack-rating breakdown and the target’s resistances.

“Divine and Occult are interchangeable.”
They are separate upgrade paths. Both are described as Faith-oriented, while Occult is commonly characterized as more Faith-focused. The better choice depends on the exact weapon and build; player discussions do not support a universal winner or a single stat threshold.
“Divine is always the best Catacombs weapon and therefore the best weapon everywhere.”
The skeleton utility is a reason to use Divine in a particular situation, not proof of superior general damage. Split damage and the loss of normal buff access can make another weapon preferable outside that role.
A decision framework for Faith characters
Use five questions before committing rare materials:
- What are your primary physical stats? If your build is heavily invested in Strength or Dexterity, changing the weapon’s physical scaling may cost more than the Faith contribution adds.
- How much Faith will you actually use? Compare the displayed Faith scaling at the final stat spread you intend to play, not only at your current level.
- Which damage profile does the target punish? Split physical-and-magic damage can be less efficient against enemies with strong defenses in both categories.
- Do you need Catacombs skeleton control? If so, Divine’s utility may justify carrying a dedicated weapon even when another weapon is your main damage tool.
- Are buffs part of your routine? Divine and Occult’s reported inability to accept normal buffs can be decisive for a buff-centered setup.
This framework avoids the simplistic rule that Divine always wins at high Faith. The available player references support a comparison of the actual weapon, upgrade level, stat grades, damage components and intended encounter—not a universal ranking.

What the evidence can and cannot establish
The detailed descriptions available for these mechanics come mainly from community-authored guides and GameFAQs or Steam discussions, including a Steam weapon guide, a GameFAQs Divine weapon discussion and a GameFAQs Divine and Occult discussion. The Steam discussion about a Divine Claymore illustrates the Magic-versus-Divine confusion that affects cleric builds.
Those sources support the broad mechanics and trade-offs explained here, but they do not provide a complete numerical formula for every weapon, reinforcement level, platform and version. They also are not first-party developer documentation. Treat exact scaling grades and attack totals shown in your game as authoritative for the weapon in front of you, and avoid importing a forum’s build-specific result into a different weapon or stat spread.
Bottom line for the question
In Dark Souls, Divine weapons do scale with Faith. The upgrade also adds magic damage and changes physical scaling, producing split damage rather than a pure Faith multiplier. Divine is useful for its Catacombs skeleton utility, but can be less efficient as an all-purpose path and, according to player guides, cannot receive the usual weapon buffs. Occult is a separate Faith path often described as more Faith-focused, while Magic and Enchanted are Intelligence-oriented. Check your exact weapon’s scaling, damage components, reinforcement level and buff requirements before converting it.
