It has a new story, and Larian says you do not need to play the earlier games to follow it. The studio has not announced a release date or platforms for the new game.
What is Divinity?
Divinity is a new role-playing game from Larian Studios, the developer of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is set in Rivellon, the world of Larian’s Divinity games. The studio describes it as its most ambitious game to date and promises “greater breadth & depth” than its previous work; those are Larian’s own claims, not independently measured comparisons. Larian’s announcement calls it a brand-new game.
The reveal teaser sets a dark tone with the line: “The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New powers stir.”
Is it a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel?
No. Divinity is a separate game in Larian’s Rivellon setting, not a continuation of Baldur’s Gate. It has its own new story. Larian says returning players may encounter continuity and characters connected to earlier Divinity entries, but the studio has not described the new game as mechanically identical to those titles.

Do you need to play Divinity: Original Sin 2 first?
No. Larian says prior experience is not required to understand the new story. Players familiar with Divinity: Original Sin or Divinity: Original Sin 2 may recognize more of the series’ continuity and characters, making the earlier games optional context rather than required homework. Larian’s news page provides the studio’s guidance on the connection.
Should you try an earlier Divinity game while you wait?
If you want to explore Rivellon before the new release, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a reasonable starting point—but choose it because you want to play that game, not because you need it to understand Divinity. Larian says the older entry offers optional continuity, not essential background.
