FFmpeg transports and, if needed, encodes media; it does not supply a public viewing page, audience discovery, a stream key, or access to a platform account. The destination and its current ingest requirements determine the settings and publishing URL.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu machine that can remain on and connected to the network for the intended broadcast period.
- A recorded lesson or prepared course program, with audio and video you have the right to stream.
- A live-streaming destination that accepts publishing from FFmpeg over a protocol such as RTMP. Confirm that the destination supports the protocol and obtain its publishing URL and credentials through its current account interface.
- The destination’s current requirements for video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and account eligibility. These details are platform-specific; the generic FFmpeg example does not establish them.
- An installed FFmpeg build. Check what is available on your system with
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -h. Ubuntu release and package source can affect the available version and features.
Keep publishing credentials private. Avoid putting a stream key in a shared script, public repository, screenshot, or support log. Treat any full command containing a key as a secret.
Publish one recorded lesson over RTMP
-
Choose the endpoint
From your streaming provider, get the RTMP publishing endpoint and the required credentials. The endpoint may combine a server address and a stream-specific path or key; follow the provider’s format rather than guessing or reusing another service’s URL.
-
Run the real-time file-to-RTMP command
FFmpeg’s documented protocol example is:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -f flv rtmp://server/live/streamReplace
input.mp4with the file path and replace the example URL with your actual publishing endpoint. In this command,-rereads the input at its native rate instead of sending the file as fast as the machine can process it;-iselects the input; and-f flvselects the FLV output container used by the example. This is a protocol illustration, not a universal ready-to-run command: confirm the destination’s accepted codecs and stream settings before publishing. Confirm the destination is receiving the program
Check the provider’s live preview or status from its current interface, then view the output from a separate client if possible. Confirm picture, sound, synchronization, and playback before leaving the process unattended.
Prepare a course that repeats reliably
The one-file command above does not by itself make a complete, validated 24/7 course schedule. Decide how lessons should flow before you automate playback.

Choose a program layout
- One continuous program: Join lessons and any transitions into a single prepared output when a fixed order is acceptable. This can make playback easier to reason about, but changing lesson order or replacing a lesson may require rebuilding the program.
- Playlist or scheduled inputs: Use a playlist strategy when lessons need to be reordered, scheduled, or updated independently. Plan transition behavior, lesson durations, an intermission or slate if needed, and what should happen if a referenced file is missing. The single-input example does not specify a complete playlist command.
- Repeated file: For a simple loop, test the installed FFmpeg build’s input-loop behavior rather than assuming that a command which starts successfully will loop correctly. Verify timestamps at the loop boundary.
Validate a full cycle
- Run the actual course sequence for at least one complete loop on the target machine.
- Check that audio and video stay synchronized, including at lesson changes and the loop boundary.
- Check for timestamp problems, unexpected gaps, missing files, and unintended silence or black frames.
- Confirm the destination continues to receive and play the program for the full cycle.
- Exercise a process restart and a network interruption on the target setup, then verify what viewers see and whether playback resumes as intended.
A process that starts without an error is not proof of reliable continuous operation. These checks are operational guidance, not a reported test result.
Choose an output workflow and recovery behavior
The RTMP example selects a container but does not prescribe codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval. Set those according to the destination’s current ingest requirements and the characteristics of the source. Do not assume that every server accepts the same settings or that a protocol example has been validated for your provider.

RTSP is a separate option only when the receiving server supports RTSP publishing. Ubuntu’s Noble FFmpeg protocol manual documents an RTSP publishing pattern and TCP/UDP transport options; RTSP and RTMP endpoints are not interchangeable. See the Ubuntu Noble FFmpeg protocol manual.
FIFO output: retrying has trade-offs
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt to recover from certain output failures, including network failures. Its queue policy matters: it can block encoding during a temporary failure, or keep processing and drop packets if the queue overflows. Blocking avoids losing packets in that queue but can stall processing; dropping can protect live timing while omitting content. Recovery settings do not guarantee an uninterrupted viewer experience. Review the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and adapt its examples to your installed build and endpoint.

The FFmpeg muxer source includes an example of streaming to RTMP through FIFO output and attempting recovery after a temporary network failure. Treat it as an example to validate, not a production guarantee: FFmpeg muxer documentation source.

For an extended broadcast, arrange for the host to supervise FFmpeg rather than relying on an open terminal alone. Use Ubuntu’s service manager or another suitable supervisor, retain logs, and monitor for repeated restarts or lack of progress. Check the remote stream from a separate client; a running local process does not establish that viewers are receiving usable video.

The exact service configuration depends on your Ubuntu release, command, file locations, and credential-handling approach. Validate it on the chosen release. The documentation cited here does not provide a release-validated service unit or a specific alerting product, so no universal unit file is supplied.
Set language metadata when it helps your learners
FFmpeg documents this option for setting the language of the first audio stream:
-metadata:s:a:0 language=eng
This labels audio-stream language metadata; it does not translate the lesson or generate subtitles. Check the resulting output and the destination or player’s behavior if learners rely on that metadata. See the FFmpeg Documentation.
Common problems and fixes
- The server rejects the connection: Confirm that you have the correct protocol, publishing URL, path, and credentials, and that the destination accepts RTMP publishing. Do not substitute an RTSP URL or assume another platform’s ingest path will work.
- The connection starts, but the provider reports an unsupported stream: Check the provider’s current codec, resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, keyframe, and account requirements. The generic command does not set or guarantee these values.
- The file races to the end rather than playing in real time: Ensure the command includes
-rebefore the input, as in the documented example. - The stream stops at the end of a lesson: A single-file publishing command does not define playlist or loop behavior. Verify the installed build’s loop approach, or prepare a continuous program or playlist and test its transitions and missing-file behavior.
- Audio or video drifts or breaks at a loop boundary: Test a complete cycle and inspect synchronization and timestamps at transitions. Do not treat successful startup as validation.
- The stream drops during a network interruption: Review whether FIFO recovery fits your failure mode and choose deliberately between blocking and dropping on queue overflow. Then test recovery from a separate viewer’s perspective; retry capability is not a promise of uninterrupted playback.
- The local process is alive, but the channel is blank or stale: Check FFmpeg logs and output progress, inspect the destination’s receiving status, and verify playback from another client. Add supervision and alerts for repeated restarts or lack of progress.
- Learners expect translated audio or captions from language metadata: The metadata option only labels the audio stream. Translation and subtitles require separately prepared content or a separate workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded YouTube course stream that stays live without keeping your Ubuntu machine on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. The setup is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
