“The program can’t start because dlaa1uict.dll is missing”
You may also see “dlaa1uict.dll was not found,” “Cannot find dlaa1uict.dll,” or a message saying that Windows could not load the file. dlaa1uict.dll is associated with Lexmark scanning software, so the safest repair is usually to restore the Lexmark printer or scanner package rather than download a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appears when opening a Lexmark scanner application: reinstall or repair the package for the exact Lexmark printer or multifunction device.
- The Lexmark device is missing from Windows: remove stale software or drivers, restart, and install the current model-specific package.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history, then reinstall the Lexmark package from its official source.
- The installer fails or the scanner still will not open: check Windows architecture, Device Manager, and Windows component health.
- The error names an unrelated executable: investigate that program separately instead of assuming the DLL belongs there.
What dlaa1uict.dll is
Public file records identify dlaa1uict.dll as WIA UI Controller, associated with Lexmark International, Inc. WIA means Windows Image Acquisition, the Windows interface used by scanner and imaging software. Lexmark scanning packages can also use TWAIN, depending on the device and software generation.

This is not the same as Microsoft’s own WIA system files. There is no reliable evidence that dlaa1uict.dll is a standalone Windows component or an essential file that should normally be present on every Windows installation. It most likely arrived with an older Lexmark printer, multifunction device, scanner driver, or utility.
Public records describe a 32-bit file with version and size details, but those details are not confirmed by a current Lexmark file manifest. Do not use those records to select a replacement file. The exact Lexmark model and installer containing this DLL have not been definitively identified in public documentation.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Lexmark scan package
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged dlaa1uict.dll.
Identify the device
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the Lexmark printer or multifunction device.
- Record its complete model name.
If it is not listed, also check whether the device is connected, powered on, and reachable over USB or the network.
Reinstall from Lexmark
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & Downloads page in a browser.
- Search for the exact printer or multifunction model.
- Select the package for your Windows version and system architecture.
- Prefer the current print-and-scan or model-specific package.
- If Lexmark lists a common utilities, print-and-scan, or network TWAIN package, select the one that matches your device and scanning method.
- Download the installer from Lexmark.
- Close the scanner application.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
- If repair is unavailable, choose the option to reinstall the software.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Open the Lexmark scanning application and perform a test scan.
A successful repair normally means the application opens without the DLL message and the scanner completes a preview or scan. If the package reports that the device is already installed, uninstall the old Lexmark package first:

- Press Windows + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the Lexmark software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current package again from Lexmark.
Do not remove Lexmark software if another user or application still depends on that device. If the device is shared, note its connection method and reinstall the matching network or USB component.
If you are manually hunting through several driver packages and guessing which one is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For this Lexmark-specific DLL, the exact model package from Lexmark remains the definitive fix.
Fix 2: Check Windows architecture and the installed driver
Public records list dlaa1uict.dll as 32-bit. That matters because a 32-bit scanner application requires compatible 32-bit components even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A random 64-bit DLL is not a valid substitute.

To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Imaging devices, or Cameras, depending on how Windows classifies the hardware.
- Look for the Lexmark device or a device with a warning icon.
- Double-click it and read the Device status message.
- On the Driver tab, note the provider and driver date.
- Use Uninstall device only if you are ready to reinstall the correct Lexmark package.
- Restart Windows, then run the Lexmark installer as administrator.
If Device Manager shows an unknown device after reinstalling, the package may not support that model or Windows release. Obtain the newest supported package for the exact model instead of forcing an older DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a driver component after installation. This is a possible cause, but there is no verified malware campaign specifically associated with dlaa1uict.dll.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the DLL or Lexmark installation folder.
- Open an entry to inspect its path and action.
- Restore it only when the path, signature, and Lexmark installation context are trustworthy.
- Run a full scan.
- Reinstall the Lexmark package from its official source.
Do not disable antivirus protection to install a DLL downloaded from an untrusted site. If the file is quarantined again after a clean Lexmark installation, stop restoring it and investigate the detection.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components
DISM and System File Checker are secondary diagnostics here. They repair Windows components and protected Windows resources; they should not be expected to recreate a missing Lexmark-owned DLL.

- Run:

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Lexmark scanner again.
DISM may report that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations or that it repaired files. Those results address Windows health, not proof that the Lexmark package has been restored. If the DLL error remains, reinstall the Lexmark software after these commands.
If repeatedly running repair commands is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected Windows issues in a free scan, while repair through the full version is optional. It is not required, and reinstalling the Lexmark program remains the correct fix when that program owns the missing file.
Fix 5: Remove stale scanner entries and reinstall cleanly
Use this when reinstalling appears to do nothing.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Lexmark device.
- Choose Remove.
- Press Windows + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Uninstall the related Lexmark software.
- Restart Windows.
- If available, open Print Management by searching for it from Start.
- Remove an obsolete Lexmark driver only when you are certain no other Lexmark device uses it.
- Restart again.
- Install the current package for the exact model.
If Print Management is unavailable in your Windows edition, skip that step. Do not delete arbitrary driver files from Windows folders.
Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
A DLL archive is not an authoritative source for a Lexmark driver component. A downloaded file can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, altered contents, or no relationship to the program that is requesting it. Even a file with the correct name may not provide the functions expected by the calling executable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Manual copying also leaves the original installation broken. The installer may need companion files, registry configuration, services, permissions, and a matching WIA or TWAIN component. Downloading dlaa1uict.dll alone often changes the error without restoring scanning.
Use the Lexmark driver portal or the original trusted Lexmark installation media instead. Do not place the file in System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory unless the Lexmark installer explicitly places it there.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Running this is therefore not a recommended fix:
regsvr32 dlaa1uict.dll
If the DLL is not a self-registering component, Windows may report that the entry point could not be found. Registration would not repair a missing Lexmark dependency, restore companion files, or correct a damaged driver installation.

- “The program can’t start because dlaa1uict.dll is missing from your computer.” The calling application cannot find a required dependency.
- “dlaa1uict.dll was not found” or “Cannot find dlaa1uict.dll.” The file is absent from the locations Windows searched, or the installation path is damaged.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in dlaa1uict.dll.” The application found a DLL but not the function it expects, often indicating an incompatible or mismatched component.
- “dlaa1uict.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” Windows found the file but could not load it correctly. A damaged file, wrong architecture, or incompatible package is possible.
The last two are general Windows loader conditions, not confirmed exact messages unique to this file.
Prevention and escalation
- Keep the Lexmark package matched to the exact device and Windows architecture.
- Do not use registry cleaners or generic DLL repair utilities.
- Before removing old printer software, confirm that no scanner application still uses it.
- Keep a record of the Lexmark model and whether it connects by USB or network.
- Install updates from Lexmark rather than replacing individual files.
- If the device is obsolete, use the Windows-supported WIA or TWAIN path when available instead of forcing legacy software.
If the error continues, record:
- The exact error text
- The executable that displays it
- The executable’s folder
- Your Windows version and architecture
- The Lexmark model
- The DLL path, if Windows provides one
- File properties and digital-signature information
- Any related error in Event Viewer under Windows Logs → Application
If the named executable is unrelated to Lexmark software, do not assume the file belongs there. That may indicate a damaged application or an improperly placed component that requires separate investigation.
