DLsite Adds a Japan-Only Bank Payment Option After Card Suspensions; Steam’s Case Is Separate

DLsite reportedly added a Japan-only bank-linked payment option after suspending major card brands. The notices do not explain the suspensions, and the evidence does not connect DLsite’s move to Steam’s payment-related removals.

DLsite’s reported bank-linked payment option is a Japan-only alternative, not a confirmed fix for Steam or proof that Steam’s removals prompted DLsite to act. DLsite’s official notices document Visa, Mastercard, and American Express suspensions in April 2024, but do not explain why the card brands were suspended. The phrase “payment processor censorship” is a publication’s interpretation, not a reason given in DLsite’s notices.

What payment method did DLsite add?

Notebookcheck reported on October 7, 2025, citing Automaton, that DLsite introduced Minna no Ginko Payment. The reported service links an account at Minna no Ginko, a Japanese digital bank, to a viviON ID. Notebookcheck said the option was unavailable outside Japan. Because the details come from that report rather than an accessible official product announcement, treat them as reported availability, not a universally available workaround. Notebookcheck’s report

Why did DLsite stop accepting Visa and Mastercard?

DLsite’s April 3, 2024 notice said Visa and Mastercard would be temporarily suspended from 18:00 JST that day. Its April 4 update added American Express, suspended from 18:30 JST on April 4. On April 22, DLsite said it had negotiated with the card brands but that restarting card payments was difficult at that time; it recommended other payment methods or buying points instead. Those notices do not identify the underlying reason for the suspensions. They do not say that a processor demanded content censorship, nor do they name a particular advocacy group or content category as the cause. Notebookcheck’s description of the events as payment-processor censorship is its characterization, not a stated explanation from DLsite.

How does this compare with Steam’s payment-related removals?

Steam is relevant as a separate example of a digital storefront affected by payment intermediaries. A Steam Support search excerpt says that in early July 2025 PayPal told Valve its acquiring bank would immediately stop processing Steam transactions in certain currencies. The support page text was not available, so the excerpt does not support a broader claim about which currencies were affected. Steam Support: Purchasing Issues

Notebookcheck described later removals of games from Steam and itch.io as similar developments. But the available reporting does not show that Steam’s removals caused DLsite to introduce its bank-linked option, or that Steam could adopt the same payment method. The two cases involve different storefront decisions and payment arrangements. Notebookcheck’s report Notebookcheck’s Steam context Related reporting

Can users outside Japan use Minna no Ginko Payment?

Notebookcheck’s October 7, 2025 report said the option was not available outside Japan. It should not be presented as a global way to pay on DLsite. The report also describes it as tied to an account at a Japanese digital bank, so readers should check DLsite’s current payment options and eligibility details before relying on it.
