NVIDIA announced DLSS 4 on January 6, 2025, alongside its GeForce RTX 50-series launch. The company said 75 games and applications would support DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation when the new GPUs launched. That figure was a launch snapshot, not a permanent compatibility total: NVIDIA later reported more than 175 supported titles in August 2025 and more than 250 by CES 2026.

The important distinction is hardware support. DLSS Multi Frame Generation is designed for RTX 50-series GPUs and laptops, while the transformer-based upgrades to DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA also benefit supported older RTX hardware. RTX 40-series cards receive the updated standard Frame Generation model, but not Multi Frame Generation.

What NVIDIA announced

NVIDIA’s CES 2025 announcement combined several DLSS changes rather than introducing one single feature. The headline feature was Multi Frame Generation, which can create up to three additional frames for every traditionally rendered frame on supported RTX 50-series hardware. NVIDIA also announced newer transformer-based models for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA, plus an updated standard Frame Generation model for RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs.

The original announcement is available from NVIDIA. NVIDIA reported up to an 8X performance increase over brute-force rendering in selected RTX 5090 scenarios, but that is a vendor claim tied to particular games, settings, resolutions and test conditions—not a universal result.

What is new in DLSS 4?

Multi Frame Generation

Standard rendering produces the frames that contain the game’s simulation and input response. Multi Frame Generation uses AI to insert up to three additional frames between traditionally rendered frames. This can substantially increase the displayed frame-rate counter, especially in demanding ray-traced or path-traced games.

Generated frames are not equivalent to frames rendered traditionally by the GPU. A higher displayed FPS number does not automatically deliver the same input latency, motion clarity or image quality as an equally high native-rendered frame rate. CPU limits, frame pacing, game-engine behavior and the quality of each title’s implementation still matter.

Transformer-based DLSS models

DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA moved to transformer-based models. NVIDIA says these models improve temporal stability, reduce ghosting and preserve more detail during motion. The practical result varies by game, resolution, graphics settings and implementation, so comparisons should include foliage, hair, particles, fine geometry, reflections and fast camera movement—not just a headline FPS figure.

Updated standard Frame Generation

The updated DLSS Frame Generation model is available to RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs when a supported game uses standard Frame Generation. NVIDIA says the model improves performance and can reduce VRAM use. It is separate from the RTX 50-exclusive Multi Frame Generation feature.

Which RTX cards support each part?

DLSS feature RTX 20/30 RTX 40 RTX 50
DLSS Super Resolution Supported in compatible games Supported Supported
Ray Reconstruction Supported in compatible games Supported Supported
DLAA Supported in compatible games Supported Supported
Transformer model upgrades Supported where compatible Supported Supported
Updated standard Frame Generation No Yes Yes
DLSS Multi Frame Generation No No Yes

That means “DLSS 4 works on RTX 40-series cards” is only partly correct. RTX 40 owners can use several DLSS 4 model improvements and updated standard Frame Generation, but Multi Frame Generation is the major RTX 50-series differentiator. Non-RTX graphics cards cannot use DLSS.

Upcoming games named in the announcement

NVIDIA separately identified Black State, DOOM: The Dark Ages and Dune: Awakening as upcoming games that would receive DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation when released. They were not necessarily playable on the first day of the RTX 50-series hardware rollout. NVIDIA also mentioned The Witcher IV as a future title featuring RTX technologies.

This distinction matters: the 75-game figure described support associated with the platform launch, while unreleased games would receive their own support when they launched or added the relevant update.

Native support versus NVIDIA App overrides

A game can support DLSS through its own native integration, or it may appear in NVIDIA’s supported override system. These are not identical. Native integration can handle motion vectors, menus and engine-specific behavior more precisely, while a driver-level override depends on compatibility with the title’s existing implementation.

NVIDIA’s documented path is:

  1. Install a compatible GeForce Game Ready or Studio driver.
  2. Update the NVIDIA App.
  3. Open Graphics.
  4. Select Program Settings.
  5. Choose the supported game or application.
  6. Open Driver Settings.
  7. Enable the relevant DLSS override.

Available categories can include:

  • DLSS Multi Frame Generation Override: for RTX 50-series users when Frame Generation is already enabled in the game.
  • DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade: for RTX 40- and RTX 50-series users.
  • DLSS Transformer Model Upgrade: for supported Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA implementations across RTX GPUs.
  • DLAA and Ultra Performance modes: additional options in compatible titles that do not expose them natively.

The override system does not add DLSS to every game. NVIDIA maintains a changing list of supported titles, and the exact options depend on the game, driver, GPU and existing DLSS implementation.

If an override causes problems

What “up to 8X” means in practice

DLSS performance figures need context. Multi Frame Generation can increase the number shown by an FPS counter without multiplying the game’s traditionally rendered workload by the same amount. The base render rate remains important for input response and frame pacing.

For a meaningful comparison, check:

  • Traditional render FPS and generated FPS separately where the game or overlay provides both.
  • Frame-time consistency rather than average FPS alone.
  • Input latency with Frame Generation disabled and enabled.
  • UI stability, foliage, hair, particles, reflections and fine geometry.
  • Fast camera movement and difficult lighting conditions.
  • Native rendering versus DLSS Super Resolution at the same output resolution.

Frame Generation is generally most useful when the underlying traditionally rendered frame rate is already reasonably stable. It is not a replacement for sufficient GPU or CPU performance.

What changed after the 75-title launch?

The original list is now historical. NVIDIA reported more than 175 DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation games and applications by August 2025, then more than 250 by CES 2026. NVIDIA also announced DLSS 4.5 at CES 2026, including a second-generation Super Resolution transformer model and planned 6X Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50-series GPUs.

Because support is version-sensitive, readers should consult NVIDIA’s current RTX games and applications database rather than relying on a copied launch list.

Should you buy an RTX 50-series GPU for DLSS 4?

New buyers seeking Multi Frame Generation

RTX 50-series hardware is the relevant choice if Multi Frame Generation is the feature you specifically want. It makes the strongest case for players using demanding ray-traced or path-traced games on high-refresh 1440p or 4K displays, provided their games have native support or reliable overrides.

RTX 40-series owners

An RTX 40-series owner can still benefit from updated standard Frame Generation and transformer-based Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA. Upgrading solely for those model improvements is a weaker case than upgrading for Multi Frame Generation, which RTX 40 does not support.

RTX 20- and 30-series owners

Older RTX cards can benefit from supported image-quality model upgrades, but they do not receive standard DLSS Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation. Buying a new GPU solely for the transformer models is difficult to justify unless the broader performance, ray-tracing or VRAM gains also matter.

Players without supported games

If you mainly play titles without DLSS support, or prefer traditionally rendered frames and dislike frame-generation artifacts, DLSS 4 should not be the deciding factor. Native rendering, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, Intel XeSS or simply adjusting resolution and graphics settings may be more relevant depending on your hardware and priorities.

Bottom line

DLSS 4’s original promise was 75 launch games and apps, but the headline number is less important than the feature split. RTX 50-series cards are required for Multi Frame Generation; RTX 40-series cards receive updated standard Frame Generation; and supported RTX 20-, 30- and 40-series owners can benefit from newer image-quality models. Treat the January 2025 list as a dated launch record, check NVIDIA’s current compatibility database, and judge generated FPS alongside latency, frame pacing and image quality.
