DLSS 5 explained: how neural rendering, Super Resolution and Frame Generation work together

DLSS 5 is NVIDIA’s optional neural-rendering stage for GeForce RTX 50-series graphics. It takes the game engine’s rendered image, geometry, textures, lighting data and motion vectors, then uses 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to add more convincing lighting and material behavior while preserving the scene artists authored.

It does not replace the rest of DLSS. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image, Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames, Multi Frame Generation can create several frames per rendered frame on RTX 50 hardware, and Ray Reconstruction improves noisy ray-traced lighting. DLSS 5 can sit alongside those features as the final visual-fidelity stage.

What DLSS 5 actually does

DLSS 5 is a suite addition rather than a new upscaling preset. Its distinctive feature is 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, which NVIDIA describes as an optional final stage after the engine and other DLSS components have prepared the frame. The model infers richer lighting and material interactions from information the game already supplies instead of inventing an unrelated scene.

The inputs include the engine’s rendered frame, artist-authored geometry, textures, lighting buffers, color data and motion vectors. Those motion vectors tell the model how objects move from one frame to the next. NVIDIA says the process is strictly one-frame-in and one-frame-out, helping prevent shimmering, swimming textures and temporal drift.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

The goal is higher visual fidelity: effects such as subsurface scattering in skin, light transmission through hair and foliage, contact shadows and small reflections can appear more lifelike while the scene remains grounded in its original geometry and composition.

Where DLSS 5 fits in the rendering pipeline

Game developers can schedule the components differently, but the conceptual flow is:

  1. Engine render: The game produces a lower-resolution or native-resolution frame and supplies motion vectors plus lighting and material information.
  2. Super Resolution: A neural model reconstructs a higher-resolution image from the lower-resolution render and supporting data.
  3. Frame Generation: An AI-generated frame is inserted between rendered frames. On RTX 50-series hardware, Multi Frame Generation can create several generated frames for each rendered frame.
  4. Ray Reconstruction: For ray-traced or path-traced scenes, a neural model can replace conventional denoising to produce cleaner lighting detail.
  5. DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering: The optional final stage enhances lighting and material response while using the engine’s structure and motion information to maintain stability.

These features are independently controllable. A game can support Super Resolution without Frame Generation, or Frame Generation without DLSS 5, depending on its integration.

How each DLSS component differs

Component Primary job Main inputs What you see Frame-rate and latency effect GPU generation and support
Super Resolution Reconstruct pixels at a higher output resolution Lower-resolution render, motion vectors and previous-frame data Sharper image than the internal render resolution would normally allow Usually increases performance by rendering fewer pixels; does not create extra time between inputs Supported according to the individual game’s DLSS integration
Frame Generation Create an additional frame between rendered frames Rendered frames, motion vectors and optical-flow information Higher displayed FPS and smoother motion Raises displayed FPS, but game simulation and input sampling do not run at the generated-frame rate; NVIDIA Reflex is important for responsiveness Availability depends on game support and compatible RTX hardware
Multi Frame Generation Create multiple generated frames for each rendered frame Rendered frames plus motion and optical-flow data Potentially much higher displayed FPS Can increase display smoothness without proportionally increasing simulation rate RTX 50 Series; NVIDIA describes up to five generated frames per rendered frame
Ray Reconstruction Replace conventional ray-tracing denoising Noisy ray-traced or path-traced lighting data Cleaner reflections, shadows and indirect lighting Performance depends on the ray-tracing workload and implementation Requires a supported game and compatible RTX implementation
DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering Add richer lighting and material behavior Engine frame, geometry, textures, lighting buffers, color and motion vectors More convincing scattering, transmission, contact shadows and micro-reflections Optional neural-rendering cost; intended as a visual-fidelity stage rather than an FPS multiplier RTX 50 Series according to NVIDIA’s compatibility table; game integration required

Super Resolution: reconstructing pixels, not adding simulation

Super Resolution renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the target output. For example, a game outputting 4K may render fewer pixels internally, then use current and prior frames, motion vectors and engine data to rebuild detail.

This is why Super Resolution can improve performance: the graphics processor shades fewer native pixels. It is also why reconstruction quality depends on motion, fine geometry and the game’s implementation. Thin wires, foliage and fast camera movement are difficult cases for any temporal reconstruction method.

Super Resolution changes the image resolution and can improve the frame rate, but it does not create a new game-simulation step. The CPU and GPU still update gameplay at the engine’s actual cadence.

Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation: smoother output with a latency trade-off

Frame Generation analyzes consecutive rendered frames and the motion information between them, then synthesizes an intermediate image. That image is displayed even though the game did not render a full simulation step for it.

The result can be a substantially higher displayed frame rate, especially when the base rendered rate is already reasonably high. It is not equivalent to running the game simulation at that displayed rate. Controls are sampled and gameplay logic advances at the rendered cadence, so perceived smoothness and responsiveness are separate measurements.

NVIDIA Reflex is designed to reduce the queueing and synchronization latency that can otherwise accompany a high-FPS presentation. A useful way to evaluate Frame Generation is therefore to check both the base rendered FPS and the input latency, not just the final counter.

Multi Frame Generation extends the idea on RTX 50-series cards by creating several generated frames per rendered frame. NVIDIA quotes up to five generated frames per rendered frame; that figure describes Multi Frame Generation, not the DLSS 5 neural-rendering stage itself.

Ray Reconstruction: a different neural task

Ray tracing and path tracing produce noisy samples that must be denoised before display. Traditional denoisers use hand-designed filters and heuristics. Ray Reconstruction uses a neural model to infer a cleaner result from the noisy ray-traced data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its job is therefore not the same as DLSS 5’s 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. Ray Reconstruction cleans and reconstructs ray-traced lighting, while DLSS 5 adds richer material and lighting behavior as an optional visual stage. A title can use one, both or neither, depending on its integration.

What makes DLSS 5 different from earlier DLSS features

Earlier DLSS capabilities mainly reconstructed existing scene information, increased output resolution, generated additional frames or improved ray-traced denoising. DLSS 5 is aimed at the appearance of the scene itself. It can model interactions such as light passing through hair or leaves, soft contact shadows, subsurface scattering and tiny reflective highlights.

NVIDIA’s stated design constraint is that these enhancements remain guided by the authored scene. The model is not supposed to redesign a character, move an object or change the game’s composition. Motion vectors and temporal processing are used to keep the effect stable as the camera and objects move.

Developer controls and artistic limits

DLSS 5 is not simply an on/off filter with one universal look. NVIDIA lists controls that let studios tune where and how strongly the neural stage operates:

  • Model selection: Developers can choose the neural model appropriate to their title and target hardware.
  • Structure Intensity: Controls the strength of high-frequency detail and fine surface definition.
  • Tone Intensity: Controls broader lighting and color response.
  • Automatic semantic masking: Helps identify categories of content that should receive or avoid the effect.
  • Developer-authored masks: Per-pixel or engine-level masks can restrict processing to selected characters, props, materials or scenes.

These controls matter because a physically plausible enhancement can still conflict with a game’s art direction. A studio may want DLSS 5 on a hero character’s skin and clothing but reduce it on stylized effects, UI-adjacent elements or deliberately flat materials.

Hardware and availability

DLSS 5 launched in NBA 2K27 on September 3, 2026. NVIDIA says 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is available on GeForce RTX 50-series desktop and laptop GPUs and through GeForce NOW.

NVIDIA’s compatibility table lists DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for RTX 50 Series and not for RTX 40, RTX 30 or RTX 20. RTX 40 support is not available today under that table. NVIDIA says it plans to investigate expanding official RTX 40 support after RTX 50 performance has been tuned, but it has not announced a firm date.

A compatible graphics card alone is not enough. The game must include DLSS 5 support, and the developer must integrate the feature. NVIDIA identifies Streamline and an Unreal Engine 5 plugin as integration paths for studios.

How to use DLSS 5 in a supported game

  1. Confirm the prerequisites: Use an RTX 50-series desktop or laptop GPU, or a supported GeForce NOW session, and install the game version that lists DLSS 5 support.
  2. Update the game and graphics driver: DLSS features are delivered through the game integration and driver support, so an older build may not expose the option.
  3. Open the graphics settings: Look under the game’s DLSS, upscaling or advanced rendering section. Labels vary by title.
  4. Choose Super Resolution separately: Select the desired output mode or quality preset if you want upscaling. DLSS 5 does not automatically imply a specific Super Resolution mode.
  5. Enable Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation only if offered: These are separate switches from DLSS 5 neural rendering.
  6. Enable DLSS 5 or 3D-Guided Neural Rendering: The exact label is game-dependent. Some titles may expose intensity or scene-specific options.
  7. Turn on Reflex when available: This helps address latency when generated frames raise the displayed frame rate.
  8. Check difficult scenes: Compare foliage, hair, reflections, thin geometry and fast camera pans. If an effect looks unstable, lower the neural intensity or disable the relevant component rather than assuming the GPU is defective.

Does DLSS 5 make fake frames or improve graphics?

Both descriptions can be technically accurate, but they refer to different components. Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation create displayed images that the game did not render as full simulation frames. DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, by contrast, changes the visual treatment of a rendered frame by inferring lighting and material behavior from engine data.

Generated frames can make motion look smoother while leaving input response tied to the underlying rendered frames. DLSS 5’s visual stage can make a scene look more detailed or realistic, but it cannot compensate for poor geometry, missing textures, incorrect animation or a game that does not support the feature.

NVIDIA also promotes the broader DLSS 4.5 suite with the figure “23 out of every 24 displayed pixels.” That statistic refers to the combined suite, not to DLSS 5 alone, so it should not be used as a standalone DLSS 5 performance claim.

Limits, artifacts and troubleshooting

The option is missing

Check the GPU generation, game version and graphics-driver version. DLSS 5 support is implemented per game; unsupported titles cannot gain the feature merely because an RTX 50 card is installed.

The image shimmers or appears to swim

Temporal instability can be most visible in foliage, hair, wires and high-frequency textures. Verify that the game is supplying motion vectors correctly, update the game, and reduce Structure Intensity if the title exposes that control.

Motion feels smooth but controls feel unchanged

That is expected when generated frames raise displayed FPS without raising the simulation rate. Compare input latency and base rendered FPS, and enable NVIDIA Reflex where the game provides it.

Lighting looks too strong or stylized

DLSS 5’s neural stage can be tuned independently from resolution and frame generation. Lower Tone Intensity or disable DLSS 5 while leaving Super Resolution enabled if you prefer the original lighting response.

Performance is lower than expected

DLSS 5 adds neural-rendering work; it is primarily a fidelity feature, not a guaranteed performance boost. Test Super Resolution, Frame Generation and DLSS 5 separately to identify which stage is responsible for the change.

How to judge DLSS 5 in practice

  • Record the native or base rendered FPS before enabling generated frames.
  • Measure input latency, not only the displayed FPS counter.
  • Inspect hair, foliage, reflections, contact shadows and translucent materials during movement.
  • Compare still images and camera pans; temporal stability matters more than a single screenshot.
  • Check whether the game’s art direction benefits from enhanced realism or intentionally avoids it.
  • Keep Super Resolution, Frame Generation and DLSS 5 as separate variables during testing.

The bottom line on DLSS 5

DLSS 5 is NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series neural-rendering feature for improving lighting and material realism while remaining guided by the game engine’s authored scene. Super Resolution reduces the cost of producing a high-resolution image, Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation increase displayed smoothness, and Ray Reconstruction improves ray-traced denoising. They can work together, but they solve different problems.

For players, the practical requirements are an RTX 50-series GPU or supported GeForce NOW access, a game with explicit DLSS 5 integration, and realistic expectations about latency. The most meaningful comparison is not “native versus AI” in the abstract; it is whether the specific title preserves its art direction, remains temporally stable and delivers a better balance of image quality, responsiveness and frame rate.
