It runs after a game’s conventional renderer to add learned lighting and material appearance, while DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs pixels and Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames. Local DLSS 5 execution requires a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU, and every supported game needs its developer to integrate and tune the feature.
What DLSS 5 actually does
DLSS 5, announced by NVIDIA on March 16, 2026, is designed to change the appearance of a completed game frame rather than simply upscale it. The game first renders its scene using its normal lighting, materials, geometry and post-processing. DLSS 5 then uses that rendered color image, motion information and temporal state to produce a final displayed appearance with additional learned lighting and material detail.

NVIDIA describes the technique as 3D-guided neural rendering. It is a one-step, pixel-space diffusion model conditioned by the current rendered frame, engine motion vectors, information carried from earlier frames and values chosen by the game’s artists. Training uses renderer-derived scene attributes so the generated result remains tied to the authored 3D scene instead of inventing an unrelated image.
That makes DLSS 5 different from a conventional image filter. It is intended to make surfaces, reflections, illumination and other material cues look more photoreal while preserving the developer’s composition and artistic direction. NVIDIA says developers can control intensity, color grading and masking, allowing a title to limit or shape the effect instead of handing every visual decision to an opaque model.

The model runs locally and is causal and deterministic: its output is calculated from the current frame and carried state in a repeatable way, with training aimed at frame-to-frame temporal stability. NVIDIA says real-time operation is supported at resolutions up to 4K on GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards.
“DLSS 5 is the GPT moment for graphics — blending handcrafted rendering with generative AI to deliver a dramatic leap in visual realism while preserving the control artists need for creative expression,” Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s founder and CEO, said in the March 16 announcement.
Where DLSS 5 sits in the rendering pipeline
It helps to separate the stages that are often grouped together under the DLSS name. A typical supported game can use one, two or all of these functions, but each solves a different problem.
1. The game’s conventional renderer
The engine creates geometry, shadows, textures, lighting and effects according to the developer’s authored scene. This is the source content that DLSS 5 is designed to respect. The renderer supplies the color image and motion vectors that later neural stages need.
2. DLSS Super Resolution
Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution output from that image, motion data and feedback from previous frames. Its goal is reconstruction: recovering detail and reducing aliasing while producing an image that resembles a higher-cost native render.
NVIDIA’s second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution is intended to improve stability, anti-aliasing and visual clarity. This is still a reconstruction stage. It does not have the same job as DLSS 5’s final learned lighting and material transformation.
3. DLSS 5 final appearance generation
After the conventional rendering work, DLSS 5 becomes the appearance stage. It can alter how light and materials are perceived in the finished frame while remaining guided by scene data, motion and artistic controls. NVIDIA’s research description calls it the first DLSS technology to generate the final displayed appearance rather than reconstructing a higher-cost reference output from the conventional renderer.

4. Frame Generation
Frame Generation creates additional frames between conventionally rendered frames. Standard Frame Generation is documented by NVIDIA as an AI-generated-frame feature used with Reflex. Multi Frame Generation can generate up to five frames for each rendered frame on GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs. These functions increase the number of frames shown on the display; they are not a replacement for DLSS 5’s lighting and material stage.
DLSS 5, Super Resolution and Frame Generation compared
| Technology | Primary job | Main inputs | What changes on screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | Reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render | Lower-resolution color data, motion data and feedback from earlier frames | Resolution, detail reconstruction and anti-aliasing |
| DLSS 5 | Generate the final learned appearance after conventional rendering | Rendered frame, engine motion vectors, carried temporal state and artistic-direction values | Lighting and material appearance, with developer-controlled intensity, color grading and masks |
| Frame Generation | Create additional displayed frames | Rendered-frame data and motion information, with Reflex used for the standard feature | Displayed frame rate; it does not perform DLSS 5’s final appearance transformation |
| Multi Frame Generation | Generate up to five frames per rendered frame | AI frame-generation pipeline on supported hardware | Higher displayed frame count on GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs |
These features can be combined. For example, Super Resolution can reduce the internal rendering workload, DLSS 5 can apply its final appearance pass, and Frame Generation can add displayed frames. The combination does not turn them into one technology: reconstruction quality, generated-frame smoothness and final lighting quality remain separate variables.
Why transformer models matter to DLSS
A convolutional neural network processes visual information mainly through local neighborhoods. That approach is effective for many image operations, but a small receptive field can make it harder to maintain consistent relationships across distant parts of a moving scene. Transformer models use attention mechanisms to relate information across a wider portion of the image and its temporal context.
For DLSS Super Resolution, NVIDIA says its second-generation transformer model targets better temporal stability, anti-aliasing and clarity. In practical terms, those goals address familiar reconstruction problems such as shimmering detail, unstable edges and softness when the camera or an object moves. The statement applies to Super Resolution’s reconstruction model; it should not be read as saying that DLSS 5 itself is simply the same transformer model.
DLSS 5 is described separately as a one-step pixel-space diffusion model. Diffusion is a generative approach that learns to produce an image conditioned on other signals. DLSS 5’s conditioning signals include the game’s rendered frame, motion vectors, temporal state and artistic controls, while renderer-derived scene attributes are used during training to keep results faithful to the authored scene.
There is no universal rule that a transformer is always better than a convolutional model. The useful comparison depends on the task, model size, temporal design, hardware budget and the training data. For DLSS, NVIDIA presents the transformer update as a Super Resolution improvement and the diffusion-based DLSS 5 stage as a different solution for final appearance generation.
Hardware requirements and game availability
DLSS 5’s local execution requirement is a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU. Owning compatible hardware is necessary but not sufficient: the game must also include a developer integration. Support is being rolled out title by title rather than enabled automatically for every DLSS-compatible game.

Performance and resource figures NVIDIA has published
The following numbers are NVIDIA’s own published figures, not independent benchmark results. Actual overhead and frame rates can vary with the game, resolution, graphics settings, driver, GPU and the developer’s implementation.
| Claim | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Compute growth across NVIDIA’s cited graphics-architecture history | 375,000× | NVIDIA-published 2026 comparison |
| Games with DLSS integrated | More than 750 | NVIDIA-published 2026 count for the broader DLSS family |
| Pixels drawn by AI in DLSS 4.5 | 23 of every 24 displayed pixels | NVIDIA description of DLSS 4.5, not a DLSS 5 benchmark |
| DLSS 5 model footprint after the October update | Approximately 118 million parameters | 24% reduction reported by NVIDIA |
| 4K video-memory use after the October update | 20% reduction | NVIDIA figure; title and settings can change the result |
| Model speed after the October update | 2× the September version; 10× the March announcement version | NVIDIA-reported model comparisons |
| NBA 2K27 frame-rate uplift | Up to 1.4× | NVIDIA claim for NBA 2K27 with the updated model, not a universal result |
The October reductions address two practical concerns: the amount of model data that must be resident and the time required to process each frame. They do not guarantee a fixed frame-rate gain in another title. A game’s base rendering workload, internal resolution, CPU limit and other enabled DLSS features still determine the final result.
Image quality versus latency
DLSS 5 primarily changes image appearance. Super Resolution primarily changes how a high-resolution image is reconstructed. Frame Generation primarily changes how many frames the display receives. Those outcomes should be evaluated separately rather than treating a higher displayed frame rate as proof of lower input latency.
Frame Generation can make camera movement look smoother because more images are shown between rendered frames, but the game’s input response still depends on the cadence of genuinely rendered frames and the rest of the pipeline. NVIDIA pairs standard Frame Generation with Reflex to address responsiveness. Reflex and Frame Generation therefore belong in a latency discussion; DLSS 5’s learned lighting pass belongs in an image-quality and rendering-cost discussion.
DLSS 5’s result also depends on developer tuning. Intensity, color grading and masking controls let a studio decide where the generated appearance should be strong, subtle or excluded. A technically correct integration can still look different from one game to another because art direction, materials, lighting targets and masks differ.

How to use DLSS 5 in a supported game
- Confirm the hardware. Use a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU for local DLSS 5 execution. Other DLSS functions may support different GPU generations, so do not infer DLSS 5 support from a general “DLSS” label.
- Update the game. Install the title update that adds DLSS 5. A current graphics driver is also sensible when a developer documents a driver requirement.
- Open the graphics settings. Look under the game’s upscaling, DLSS, rendering or advanced graphics section. The exact label and menu location are decided by the developer.
- Enable the DLSS 5 option. If the game exposes separate controls for Super Resolution, Frame Generation or a DLSS 5 appearance mode, treat them as independent switches.
- Choose Super Resolution separately. Select the internal-resolution mode that fits your performance target. This controls reconstruction and should not be confused with the final appearance setting.
- Configure Frame Generation only if needed. Enable standard or Multi Frame Generation when you want more displayed frames and the title and GPU support it. Keep Reflex enabled when the game provides it with the standard Frame Generation path.
- Compare with controlled settings. Use the same resolution, quality preset and camera location when judging the effect. Toggle DLSS 5 while watching fine materials, bright lights, reflections and moving edges rather than relying only on the frame-rate counter.
Common problems and what they mean
The DLSS 5 option is missing
First check that the GPU is a GeForce RTX 50 Series model and that the game version includes the feature. A title can have Super Resolution or Frame Generation without DLSS 5. If the developer has not shipped an integration, there is no universal driver switch that can add it.
The image looks too intense or stylistically wrong
DLSS 5 is designed to be tuned by the developer. Use any available intensity or appearance controls, and test the game’s color-grading options. If no user control is exposed, the result is determined by the studio’s masks, artistic-direction values and update version.

Motion looks unstable
Check whether the issue appears in Super Resolution reconstruction, DLSS 5’s appearance pass or Frame Generation. Temporarily disable the other stages one at a time. Shimmering edges and unstable reconstructed detail point toward the Super Resolution path; unusual lighting changes point toward the final appearance stage; interpolation artifacts around fast-moving objects point toward Frame Generation.
Frame rate improved but controls do not feel equally responsive
Displayed frames and input latency are different measurements. Check the genuinely rendered frame rate, enable Reflex when available with standard Frame Generation, and compare responsiveness with Frame Generation disabled. Do not use the DLSS 5 image-quality setting as a latency control.
Memory use or performance differs from NVIDIA’s figures
The October reductions are vendor-published reference figures. Resolution, texture settings, the selected Super Resolution mode, Frame Generation, driver version and the game’s implementation all affect measured overhead. A different result does not by itself indicate a faulty installation.
Is DLSS 5 a replacement for Super Resolution?
No. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution inputs, while DLSS 5 generates the final learned appearance after rendering. A supported game may use both because they address different stages. One reduces the cost of producing detailed pixels; the other changes the lighting and material appearance of the finished frame.
DLSS 5 is also not a replacement for Frame Generation. Frame Generation adds displayed frames, whereas DLSS 5 changes the appearance of each final frame. A game can expose either feature independently or combine them, depending on the developer’s integration and the GPU requirements.
What to check before choosing an RTX 50 Series GPU for DLSS 5
- Game list: Verify that the specific games you play have announced or shipped DLSS 5 support. Broad DLSS adoption does not mean universal DLSS 5 support.
- Desired benefit: Choose DLSS 5 for its potential lighting and material improvements, Super Resolution for reconstruction and resolution efficiency, and Frame Generation for more displayed frames.
- Latency expectations: Evaluate Reflex and the base rendered frame rate separately from the displayed frame rate.
- Memory and workload: Treat NVIDIA’s 20% 4K memory reduction and speed figures as published claims that can vary by title and settings.
- Software timing: Confirm the game patch, driver and graphics-menu options available on the day you plan to play.
DLSS 5 is therefore best understood as an additional neural-rendering stage in the DLSS family, not a new name for every AI feature. Its defining job is to generate the final learned lighting and material appearance from a developer-authored scene, while Super Resolution reconstructs pixels and Frame Generation increases displayed frame count.
