DLSS 5 is not an officially documented NVIDIA release in the evidence available for this comparison. Sony PC games that expose all three technologies currently point to NVIDIA DLSS 4/4.5 as the safest image-quality choice on compatible GeForce hardware. ComputerBase’s 2026 blind comparison preferred DLSS 4.5 in 48.2% of 6,747 votes across six games, while AMD FSR and Intel XeSS remain important because they run on more hardware and can look excellent when a game integrates them well.
For a practical starting point, choose DLSS Quality on an RTX card, the game’s native FSR mode on Radeon, and XeSS using its XMX path on Intel Arc. Compare the same scene, preset, sharpening and ray-tracing settings before deciding which looks best on your system.

What “DLSS 5” means in this comparison
NVIDIA’s official material identified for this topic documents DLSS 4, including transformer-based models and Multi Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 50-series PCs. No official DLSS 5 announcement is established here. The independent 2026 comparison discussed below tested DLSS 4.5, not a product called DLSS 5.

That distinction matters because online labels often combine a game’s menu wording, a driver update, an internal model revision or speculation about a future release. When a Sony port presents a DLSS option, check the game’s patch notes and the driver version rather than assuming the menu represents a new major generation. The reconstruction result also depends on the port’s motion vectors, exposure handling, sharpening and other integration choices.

Which Sony games support DLSS, FSR and XeSS?
Support is specific to each game and patch. Sony’s official Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition PC feature list includes NVIDIA DLSS 3 upscaling and frame generation, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, unlocked frame rates and DualSense support. Sony’s PC announcement for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart lists DLSS 3, FSR 2, XeSS and Insomniac’s Temporal Injection.
Those listings do not guarantee that every later model or feature is available in every patch. A menu may expose a different FSR generation, omit frame generation, or change quality presets after an update. Open the game’s graphics settings and record the exact options shown before making a comparison.

How the three upscalers reconstruct an image
DLSS
DLSS reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render using temporal data, motion information and an AI model. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 announcement describes new transformer-based models and Multi Frame Generation on GeForce RTX 50-series systems. The transformer and frame-generation features are separate from the basic reconstruction question: a generated frame can increase displayed frame rate, but it does not make the underlying rendered frame more detailed or remove input latency from the base render.
In the cited ComputerBase comparison, DLSS 4.5 led in the areas that usually expose reconstruction weaknesses: foliage, hair, thin geometry and moving detail. That is why DLSS Quality is the sensible first test on a compatible RTX card, even when another option produces a similar average frame rate.
AMD FSR
FSR has the broadest software reach and is therefore common in PC ports that must support Radeon, GeForce and other GPUs. The exact result depends heavily on the FSR generation implemented by the game. A conventional non-ML implementation can differ visibly from AMD’s newer machine-learning path, so “FSR” alone is not a complete technical description.
AMD’s 2026 material cites a 3.5× average performance uplift for an FSR Redstone example on a Radeon RX 9070 XT. That is an AMD vendor claim for specified games and settings, not a universal performance guarantee. Treat it as evidence of the feature’s potential, not as a promise for every Sony port or graphics preset.

Intel XeSS
Intel describes XeSS as AI deep-learning upscaling with two integration paths. Intel Arc hardware can use the XMX path, while the DP4a path is intended for broader compatibility on GPUs without Arc’s matrix engines. If a game offers a choice or reports the path in its settings, Arc owners should prefer XMX and then inspect motion stability against DLSS and FSR at the same output and internal-resolution preset.

DLSS 4.5 led the 2026 blind comparison
ComputerBase reported that DLSS 4.5 received 48.2% of 6,747 blind-test votes across six tested titles. This is a result from that test panel, not a population estimate for every player, monitor or game. It nevertheless supports a practical conclusion: when a Sony port offers a current DLSS implementation and your GeForce card supports it, DLSS is the safest first choice for fine detail and temporal stability.
The lead is most visible in scenes containing moving foliage, hair, wires, fences, particles, reflections or other thin structures. Look for crawling edges, flicker, broken strands and detail that disappears during camera movement. A still screenshot can hide those problems, so evaluate a repeatable moving scene.
XeSS can beat older FSR implementations
TechSpot’s 2025 support review covered more than 650 games and notes that XeSS can outperform older, non-ML FSR implementations in some titles. That does not make XeSS universally superior: a well-integrated FSR version can beat a poorly integrated XeSS version, and the result changes with internal resolution, sharpening and motion-vector quality.
Integration matters more than the label
Upscalers receive the game’s motion vectors, depth data and exposure information. If those inputs are incomplete or handled poorly, a newer model can show ghosting, shimmering or unstable reflections. Conversely, an older option can look cleaner when the developer’s implementation is better tuned. Compare options inside the same build rather than assuming a version number settles the question.

At 1440p
1440p gives each reconstruction method less output detail than 4K, so aggressive performance presets can become soft quickly. Start with the Quality preset for each option. Inspect foliage, hair and distant geometry while panning the camera, then move down to a faster preset only if the base frame rate is insufficient.

On an RTX card, DLSS Quality is the default test. On Radeon, use the game’s highest-quality native FSR mode first and check which generation is installed. On Arc, use XeSS Quality with XMX when available. Keep sharpening identical or disabled during the first pass; a sharpen filter can make one image appear crisper while amplifying its noise.
At 4K
4K provides more output pixels and generally gives temporal reconstruction more information to work with. Quality modes are therefore a stronger fit, especially in foliage-heavy areas. If performance remains limited, compare the next-faster preset while watching for disocclusion trails behind moving characters, shimmering wires and unstable reflections.
Do not compare a 4K DLSS Performance image with a 4K FSR Quality image and call the result a technology verdict. The internal resolutions differ. Use matching quality targets, document the preset and repeat the same camera path.

Performance features that should not be confused with upscaling quality
Frame generation
NVIDIA’s DLSS Multi Frame Generation is documented for GeForce RTX 50-series PCs. It creates additional displayed frames between rendered frames. This can raise the reported frame rate, but it does not equal the latency or responsiveness of the base render rate. Test the game’s controls with frame generation disabled first; enable it only after the native or upscaled base frame rate feels responsive.
Horizon Forbidden West lists DLSS 3 upscaling and frame generation separately, illustrating why these settings should be treated as separate decisions. A higher counter value with frame generation enabled is not proof that the reconstruction itself is sharper.
Temporal Injection
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart also offers Insomniac’s Temporal Injection. It is another reconstruction option, not an automatic baseline for judging DLSS, FSR or XeSS. Compare it under the same motion, output resolution and quality target if you want to include it in a full port-level test.

A repeatable way to choose the best upscaler in a Sony port
- Update deliberately. Note the game patch and GPU driver. If an update changes the available model or preset, record that version with your result.
- Set the output. Choose 1440p or 4K, disable dynamic resolution for the initial comparison if the game allows it, and use the same refresh-rate and ray-tracing settings.
- Match the quality target. Select Quality for every upscaler first. If the game exposes internal-resolution percentages, write them down rather than relying only on labels.
- Standardize sharpening. Use the same sharpening value, or turn sharpening off for the first pass. Repeat the test with each method’s recommended sharpening only after the neutral comparison.
- Record hardware and software. Log GPU model, driver, game patch, output resolution, upscaler generation, preset and frame-generation state.
- Use a short repeatable route. Walk or pan through a scene containing foliage, hair, particles, reflective surfaces and thin geometry. Repeat the same camera movement for each option.
- Inspect motion first. Watch for flicker, crawling edges, ghost trails, disocclusion artifacts and detail loss while moving. Then pause to inspect fine texture and distant geometry.
- Measure base performance. Compare the frame rate with frame generation off. If one option needs a lower preset to reach the same rate, note that trade-off instead of comparing unlike settings.
- Test latency-sensitive play. After choosing a reconstruction mode, enable frame generation only if the base frame rate and controls remain comfortable.
Hardware-specific recommendations
GeForce RTX
- Start with DLSS Quality.
- Confirm whether the game offers DLSS 3 or a later model; do not call the option “DLSS 5” unless NVIDIA and the game officially identify it that way.
- Evaluate frame generation separately from reconstruction quality and base latency.
- If DLSS shows unusual ghosting or shimmer, compare the game’s sharpening and ray-tracing settings before abandoning it; integration can vary by patch.
Radeon
- Start with the game’s native FSR Quality mode.
- Verify the FSR generation exposed by the installed patch. The newest ML features are documented for Radeon RX 7000- and RX 9000-series hardware, so a menu label alone does not establish that every Radeon model can use them.
- Compare motion stability against XeSS and any native temporal option at the same internal-resolution target.
- Treat AMD’s 3.5× Redstone figure as a vendor result for specified RX 9070 XT tests, not a guaranteed uplift in your Sony game.
Intel Arc
- Prefer the XMX XeSS path when the game offers it.
- Check whether the title is using XMX or DP4a, because the path affects the intended hardware acceleration.
- Compare moving foliage, hair and reflections against DLSS and FSR rather than judging from a static screenshot.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming every “DLSS 5” claim is official
Correct the terminology by identifying the documented DLSS generation in the game menu, NVIDIA release information and patch notes. The evidence here supports DLSS 4 and an independent DLSS 4.5 test, not an official DLSS 5 release.
Comparing different internal resolutions
Quality, Balanced and Performance labels can map to different internal resolutions between games and technologies. Match the preset or percentage, record it, and avoid a winner declaration based on unequal inputs.
Judging from one paused screenshot
Temporal artifacts often appear only during motion. Use a repeatable camera route with foliage, hair, particles, reflections and thin geometry, then inspect both movement and still detail.
Using the frame-rate counter as an image-quality test
Frame generation can inflate displayed frames without increasing the base render rate. Compare reconstruction with frame generation off, then make a separate decision about generated frames and latency.
Ignoring the patch
Sony ports can change their available options and tuning through updates. Record the patch and recheck the graphics menu after major updates.
Which upscaler should you use in Sony PC games?
- Choose DLSS first when you have a compatible GeForce card and the game’s implementation is current. The 2026 blind-test result and observed strengths in foliage, hair and thin geometry make it the safest image-quality starting point.
- Choose FSR first on Radeon when it is the game’s native, highest-quality option, especially when hardware compatibility matters. Verify whether the implementation is an older conventional version or a newer ML path.
- Choose XeSS first on Intel Arc using XMX when available. It is also worth testing on other compatible GPUs because TechSpot’s 2025 review found cases where XeSS beat older non-ML FSR.
- Choose by the game when needed. A well-integrated older option can look better than a poorly integrated newer one. If two modes are close, keep the one with fewer moving artifacts at your preferred frame rate.
The evidence supports “DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS in Sony games” as a game-by-game decision with a clear default: DLSS 4/4.5 for the strongest current reconstruction on compatible GeForce hardware, FSR for reach and Radeon support, and XeSS as a credible alternative whose XMX path deserves a careful test on Arc. There is not enough official evidence to treat “DLSS 5 image quality” as a settled category.
