Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes, community modifications reported in September 2026 can make some RTX 40, 30 and 20 Series systems display multi-frame-generation behavior, but that is not the same as NVIDIA support. NVIDIA’s own documentation associates DLSS Multi Frame Generation (MFG) with RTX 50 Series hardware (and RTX PRO Blackwell), while older-card methods are unofficial, game-dependent and sometimes hybrid implementations that use other frame-interpolation technology.
If you need a supported, predictable MFG path, use a compatible RTX 50 Series card. If you already own an older card, a mod may be worth experimenting with in a single-player DirectX 12 game, provided you accept possible artifacts, latency or frame-pacing problems and the risk of anti-cheat detection.

What “DLSS MFG on older GPUs” really means
There are three different ideas often collapsed into the phrase “DLSS frame generation.” Separating them prevents a modded result from being mistaken for a new NVIDIA feature on older hardware.

The Frame Generation model upgrade
NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App documentation describes a newer Frame Generation model upgrade for RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series users. That upgrade changes the model used for ordinary Frame Generation; it does not grant RTX 40, 30 or 20 Series cards official MFG support.
Multi Frame Generation
MFG generates multiple additional frames for each natively rendered frame. NVIDIA’s official descriptions identify RTX 50 Series as the intended GeForce platform. NVIDIA Developer documentation says the model can generate up to five frames per rendered frame on RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. Community “unlock” packages attempt to reproduce some of that behavior on earlier cards, but they are not NVIDIA drivers or supported feature paths.
NVIDIA’s official position and supported path
NVIDIA’s support article “Enabling DLSS 4 overrides in NVIDIA App,” updated February 3, 2025, says the MFG override enables Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series users when Frame Generation is enabled in a game. On the same page, NVIDIA separately lists its Frame Generation model upgrade for RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series users. Treat those as two different overrides with different GPU coverage.

That article listed Game Ready Driver 572.16 or newer and NVIDIA App 11.0.2.312 or newer as prerequisites when it was updated. Those are the versions stated by the article at that date, not a guarantee that they remain the current minimums. The NVIDIA App can only expose the supported override when the game and hardware meet NVIDIA’s conditions.
NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement on March 31, 2026 describes 6X MFG on RTX 50 Series. In a compatible title, 6X generates five additional frames for every natively rendered frame. NVIDIA says some games with newer Frame Generation DLLs support the mode and reports that moving from 4X to 6X raises 4K frame rates in path-traced titles by up to 35% on RTX 50 Series. “Up to” is important: it is a company claim for a defined class of titles, not a result every game or GPU will reproduce.

NVIDIA also says its new frame-generation AI model is “40% faster, uses 30% less VRAM, and only needs to run once per rendered frame to generate multiple frames.” Those figures are NVIDIA’s comparison with its prior model. In a separate example, NVIDIA reported a 10% faster frame rate and 400 MB less memory use at 4K, maximum settings, in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide with DLSS Frame Generation. Neither example is a controlled test of an older-GPU modification.
What the reported modifications do
September 2026 coverage describes more than one approach, so “the MFG mod” is not a single standardized package. Compatibility is determined by the particular files, game engine, GPU generation and graphics API involved.
| Approach | Reported GPU coverage | Reported requirements or behavior | Support status |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 40 MFG walkthrough | RTX 40 Series | Check that the game supports MFG; the reported workflow installs ReShade HDR Installer, “RTX 40 MFG” and OptiScaler. | Unofficial modification; game-specific |
| “DLSS Unlocked” package | RTX 20, 30 and 40 Series | Reportedly needs a DirectX 12 game that already supports DLSS upscaling and Frame Generation. | Unofficial modification; implementation varies |
| NVIDIA App MFG override | RTX 50 Series | Frame Generation must be enabled in the game; uses NVIDIA’s supported override path. | Official NVIDIA support |
Tom’s Hardware reported at least three multi-game unlock mods, indicating that experiments are no longer limited to one isolated title. That reporting still does not establish universal game support, consistent frame pacing or a common performance level across RTX generations.
The RTX 40 hybrid path
Tom’s Hardware’s description of “DLSS Unlocked” characterizes the RTX 40 implementation as hybrid: DLSS Frame Generation supplies one generated frame, while AMD FSR 3.1 supplies additional interpolated frames. That is materially different from native RTX 50 MFG. The output may be presented as a higher multiplier, but the components, timing and image reconstruction are not identical to NVIDIA’s supported model.
The RTX 20 and 30 path
For RTX 20 and 30 Series, the same report says the package uses AMD FSR 3.1 for frame interpolation rather than native NVIDIA MFG. A title therefore needs to expose the hooks the mod expects, and the resulting frames should be evaluated as a third-party combination rather than as proof that those GPUs gained RTX 50 hardware capabilities.

How to try the reported RTX 40 workflow
The following is a summary of the workflow described by PC Gamer, not an NVIDIA installation guide. Use it only with a title that you are willing to run without competitive anti-cheat protection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Confirm the game’s feature support. Check that the specific title is reported to support MFG or the relevant Frame Generation path. Do not assume support because another game works.
- Prefer a single-player test. PC Gamer specifically recommends a single-player title because injected rendering files can trigger anti-cheat systems.
- Verify the graphics API. The separate “DLSS Unlocked” report requires a DirectX 12 game with native DLSS upscaling and Frame Generation support. This prerequisite belongs to that package; another mod may impose different conditions.
- Back up the game files and settings. Keep an unmodified copy of the game directory, note the original DLSS and Frame Generation settings, and disable automatic file replacement while you test. This gives you a clean rollback if the game stops launching.
- Install the reported components in their documented order. The walkthrough names ReShade HDR Installer, “RTX 40 MFG” and OptiScaler. Obtain each component from its current maintainer and follow that component’s release-specific instructions; the reporting does not establish one permanent version combination.
- Launch with native settings first. Start the game with its normal DLSS upscaling and Frame Generation options enabled, then apply the mod’s configuration. Changing several rendering options at once makes it difficult to identify which component caused a crash or visual defect.
- Test a repeatable scene. Compare the same camera movement, effects-heavy area and resolution with and without the modification. Record frame time, input feel and visible artifacts rather than relying only on the headline multiplier.
- Remove the files if anything is unstable. Restore the backed-up files, verify the game installation through its launcher and clear any shader cache only if the mod’s instructions call for it.
The walkthrough does not prove that every RTX 40 card, driver or game will work. A successful launch is not evidence of NVIDIA support, and a displayed MFG toggle does not guarantee that all generated frames come from NVIDIA’s MFG model.
Compatibility checklist before installing anything
- GPU: identify the exact RTX 40, 30 or 20 model and driver branch. Generation-level labels do not guarantee identical behavior between cards.
- Game: confirm the title, patch and executable are supported by the specific mod. A mod tested on one game engine may fail after an update.
- API: DirectX 12 is a stated prerequisite for the reported “DLSS Unlocked” package.
- Native features: that package expects the game to expose DLSS upscaling and Frame Generation already.
- Rendering stack: determine whether the package uses DLSS Frame Generation, FSR 3.1 interpolation or a combination. The name “MFG” alone does not answer this.
- Mode: keep testing to offline or single-player environments unless the game developer and anti-cheat provider explicitly permit the modification.
- Rollback: have original files and a verification method ready before the first launch.
What to measure instead of trusting a multiplier
A generated-frame count is only one variable. A mod can raise the displayed frame rate while leaving the game’s simulation and input response tied to a much lower native-render rate. Examine frame-time graphs, camera pans, fast traversal and UI motion. Look for duplicated objects, halos around moving characters, disocclusion errors and uneven pacing.
Latency also depends on the native frame rate, the game’s queue, synchronization settings and the particular interpolation chain. The supplied reporting contains no controlled, cross-generation benchmark that establishes a universal FPS, latency or image-quality result for these mods. It is therefore not responsible to promise a percentage gain for an RTX 40, 30 or 20 card.
NVIDIA’s own 6X and “up to 35%” figures apply to compatible RTX 50 Series titles. They should not be transferred to a hybrid RTX 40 setup or an RTX 20/30 setup that uses FSR 3.1 interpolation. Likewise, the 40% speed and 30% VRAM claims describe NVIDIA’s model comparison, not community packages.

Anti-cheat and stability risks
PC Gamer warns that these modifications can trigger anti-cheat detection. Injection, replacement DLLs and shader-layer tools can look similar to prohibited software even when the user’s intent is only visual experimentation. Do not enter ranked, competitive or account-sensitive modes with an unapproved rendering modification. A detection decision belongs to the game’s anti-cheat system, not to the mod author.
Other failure modes include a crash during shader compilation, a black screen after a game update, a missing overlay, corrupted HDR output or a return to the desktop when Frame Generation is toggled. The safest recovery is to remove the added files, restore the backup, verify the installation and retest the unmodified game before trying a different package.
Which path makes sense for you?
| Your situation | Most defensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want supported MFG and predictable game compatibility | Compatible RTX 50 Series hardware and the NVIDIA App path | This is the generation NVIDIA identifies for MFG; game support is still required. |
| You own an RTX 40 and accept tinkering | Try the title-specific RTX 40 workflow in single-player | Reported methods exist, but they are unofficial and may combine DLSS and other interpolation. |
| You own an RTX 20 or 30 | Evaluate the “DLSS Unlocked” prerequisites carefully | The reported implementation relies on FSR 3.1 interpolation and DirectX 12/native feature hooks, not native MFG. |
| You play anti-cheat-protected competitive games | Stay with the unmodified, supported rendering path | The reported injection risk can outweigh an uncertain frame-rate benefit. |
An RTX 50 Series upgrade is the only hardware route in the material documented here for officially supported NVIDIA MFG. It is optional for experimenting with community modifications, but it is the clearer choice when support status, consistent updates and account safety matter more than avoiding a hardware purchase.
Bottom line
Mods can make older RTX cards show multi-frame-generation-like output in selected games, and reports now cover RTX 40, 30 and 20 Series. They do not change NVIDIA’s official compatibility statement: supported MFG remains an RTX 50 Series feature, while RTX 40’s documented NVIDIA path is a separate Frame Generation model upgrade. Treat every older-GPU unlock as an experimental, title-specific modification, identify which technology actually creates the extra frames, test offline, and keep a rollback plan.
