There is no universal winner in the DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS comparison. The best option is the version your game supports that looks good at a comparable render resolution and runs well on your GPU. Check super resolution and frame generation separately: one reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render; the other inserts generated frames and does not, by itself, deliver the responsiveness of the same increase in natively rendered frames.
What DLSS, FSR and XeSS actually do
These names refer to families of graphics features, not one fixed setting. A game may implement different versions of a family, and support for one feature does not establish support for every feature under that brand.

Super resolution
Super resolution renders a game at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image for the selected output resolution. It can reduce the rendering workload, but the result depends on the implementation, game, scene and render scale. Intel describes XeSS-SR as a temporally amortized upsampling technique that replaces the renderer’s temporal anti-aliasing stage (Intel XeSS-SR Developer Guide 2.0).

Frame generation creates additional frames between rendered frames. It is a separate feature from super resolution: a game can support one without the other, and a displayed frame rate that includes generated frames is not the same measurement as the rate of natively rendered frames. Judge responsiveness as well as the displayed number, particularly in games where input response matters.

GPU compatibility: check the exact feature, not just the brand
Compatibility differs by technology generation and feature. A game menu is the practical check for what that game actually exposes; then verify that the particular feature is supported by your GPU. The vendor overviews describe families of features, but a family name alone does not guarantee that every feature works on every GPU carrying a vendor’s name.
| Technology | What the available compatibility information establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA DLSS | DLSS features are tied to supported GeForce hardware and the game’s implementation. NVIDIA’s product overview describes the current lineup, but the compatibility information reviewed here does not establish a dated, feature-by-feature matrix for every GeForce generation. | Check the game’s available DLSS options and NVIDIA’s current support information for the exact GPU and feature. |
| AMD FSR | AMD’s compatibility information says FSR Upscaling 4.1 is available on RX 7000-series graphics and above; Redstone is listed for RX 9000-series and above. AMD also says individual technologies require game integration. Earlier FSR generations have different compatibility. | Check the game’s FSR version and whether the specific Redstone feature is integrated or otherwise supported on your GPU. |
| Intel XeSS | Intel documents an Intel-optimized implementation and a cross-vendor implementation with stated hardware and API requirements. Intel’s XeSS 3 page says multi-frame generation is available only on Intel devices; its support table lists super resolution more broadly than that generation feature. | Check Intel’s requirements and the game’s implementation. Support for XeSS super resolution does not imply support for XeSS 3 multi-frame generation. |
In practical terms, “Does FSR work on NVIDIA?” or “Can I use XeSS on a non-Intel GPU?” cannot be answered for every version with a simple yes or no. Compatibility depends on the particular FSR or XeSS implementation, the game and the GPU. Check the specific game’s menu and the relevant vendor requirements rather than assuming every version has the same reach.

Which upscaler looks best?
Image quality is game- and scene-dependent. A WQHD side-by-side test by ComputerBase, updated March 4, 2026, compared DLSS 4.5, FSR 4 and XeSS 2 in six games. It used DLSS and FSR Balanced and XeSS Quality to match render resolution, because Intel’s preset labels do not map directly to the other vendors’ labels. Its ordering varied between games, so the test supports game-specific judgments, not a universal winner. The comparison used video capture at 60 FPS, which is a limitation to keep in mind when evaluating motion and temporal behavior.

For your own game, inspect both a still scene and movement. Look for fine-detail loss, blur, shimmering or flicker, and ghosting behind moving objects. Use the same output resolution, scene and graphics settings when comparing options; otherwise, a preset label or a different scene can make the comparison misleading.

Why “Quality” is not a reliable cross-brand match
Intel’s guide gives these XeSS scale factors for version 1.3 and later: Ultra Quality Plus 1.3×, Ultra Quality 1.5×, Quality 1.7×, Balanced 2.0×, Performance 2.3× and Ultra Performance 3.0×. These are XeSS figures, not a shared scale for DLSS and FSR. Preset names do not prove that two technologies render at the same input resolution, and Intel’s factors should not be applied to earlier XeSS versions without checking their documentation.
Which gives more FPS?
Super resolution can raise performance by reducing the resolution the GPU renders, but the amount depends on the game, GPU, settings and chosen render scale. The evidence here does not establish a universal performance uplift or a comprehensive three-way performance ranking. ComputerBase’s six-game comparison was a bounded image-quality test, not a broad benchmark of performance across systems.

AMD reports that FSR Frame Generation on a Radeon RX 9070 XT delivered 4.7× FPS in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Cyberpunk 2077, and 2.6× FPS in Grand Theft Auto V (AMD, 2026). Those are AMD’s results for its stated GPU and tests, not independent head-to-head findings or a general prediction for another PC. Frame-generation configurations and the native-rendering baseline affect how such figures should be interpreted; generated frames should not be confused with an equal increase in natively rendered frames.

Which technology is supported in more games?
Support counts depend on which games and versions are counted. In an audit published March 12, 2026, TechSpot drew its starting data from PC Gaming Wiki and cross-checked entries. Among 118 games in its sample of 2025 releases that supported at least one form of upscaling, it counted:
- DLSS upscaling in 114 of 118 games (97%).
- Some form of FSR in 104 of 118 games (88%).
- XeSS in 67 of 118 games (57%).
For the newer versions TechSpot selected as decent-quality upscalers, it reported DLSS in 97% of the sample, FSR 4 in 72%, and XeSS 1.3 or newer in 53%. These are sample counts under TechSpot’s definitions, not current totals for all PC games and not a score of visual quality.
Version distinctions matter within FSR as well. TechSpot counted 85 of those 118 games as having FSR 3.1 or newer, which could be upgraded to FSR 4 through AMD’s driver feature subject to exclusions the article describes, including Vulkan or older APIs. TechSpot also counted frame-generation support separately from upscaling. A game counted as supporting one feature or version should not automatically be treated as supporting another.
How to choose an option in your game
- Identify your GPU and target output resolution. Record the exact GPU model and the resolution you want to display, such as 2560 × 1440 or 3840 × 2160.
- Check the game’s menu for exact options. Note which technology and version are offered, and whether super resolution and frame generation appear as separate settings.
- Match render resolution, not preset names. Choose settings that use comparable input resolution where the game exposes enough information to do so. Cross-brand labels such as “Quality” are not a reliable match.
- Compare the same scene in motion and at rest. Check detail stability, ghosting, shimmer and blur at your chosen output resolution.
- Measure rendered performance separately from generated output. Keep the scene and graphics settings consistent, and consider responsiveness as well as the displayed frame rate.
- Keep the setting that works best in that game. If no option delivers acceptable image quality and performance, native rendering is a useful baseline for deciding whether the trade-off is worthwhile.
