If Windows says dmdskmgr.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows itself rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest sequence is:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker.
- Repair Windows with a matching installation source if DISM cannot find source files.
- Use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair if the component remains damaged.
What is dmdskmgr.dll?
dmdskmgr.dll is the Disk Management Snap-in Support Library, published by Microsoft. It belongs to the Windows component identified in servicing records as Microsoft-Windows-DiskManagement-Snapin.
Disk Management is the built-in Windows utility used to view and manage disks, partitions, volumes, drive letters, and related storage information. You can open it by pressing Windows key + R, entering:
diskmgmt.msc
and pressing Enter. Microsoft documents Disk Management as a built-in tool in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The file is historically associated with Logical Disk Manager and dynamic-disk management. Its traditional location is:
%SystemRoot%System32dmdskmgr.dll
On a typical Windows installation, that expands to:
C:WindowsSystem32dmdskmgr.dll
Do not assume that a file is correct merely because it has this name. Windows components must also match the installed Windows build, architecture, language, and digital signature.
Which Windows versions contain dmdskmgr.dll?
The component is part of Windows rather than a separately installed Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game runtime package. Both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows releases have used it.
Some historical catalog observations list versions including:
| Architecture | Reported version | Approximate listed size |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 0.26 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 0.21 MB |
| 64-bit | 10.0.10586.494 | 0.26 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.10586.494 | 0.21 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.3.9600.17031 | 0.2 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.2.9200.16384 | 0.2 MB |
These are historical catalog observations, not a current Microsoft file manifest. Do not use a version table to choose a replacement file.
A 64-bit Windows installation can contain both native 64-bit components and 32-bit compatibility components. System32 and SysWOW64 have names that can be confusing, so do not copy a DLL between them based only on folder names.
What errors can dmdskmgr.dll cause?
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because dmdskmgr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because dmdskmgr.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading dmdskmgr.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file dmdskmgr.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “dmdskmgr.dll could not be loaded.”
- “MMC Snap-in Failed to Initialize Disk Management Extension.”
The MMC message can appear when the Disk Management extension cannot initialize. The documented legacy case involved corruption or loss of registration on Windows 2000-era systems.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dmdskmgr.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies. DISM, SFC, servicing logs, and the surrounding error context are more useful than copying a file blindly.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
A failed or incomplete update can leave a Windows component unavailable. Start with the least invasive repair.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
diskmgmt.mscand select OK.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Test Disk Management with
diskmgmt.msc.
If Disk Management opens after the restart, the failure was likely related to incomplete servicing. If the same DLL error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC may need as its repair source.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to stop temporarily.
A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows before testing again, or continue directly to SFC if DISM completes normally.
Run SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
SFC may report that:
- It found no integrity violations.
- It found corrupt files and repaired them.
- It found corrupt files but could not repair some of them.
Restart Windows after SFC completes, then open:
diskmgmt.msc
If SFC repaired dmdskmgr.dll or related Windows files, Disk Management should load normally after the restart.
Manually finding the damaged component and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions are available through the full version, but it is optional and is not required for Microsoft’s repair process.
If DISM says “The source files could not be found”
This message means DISM could not obtain the files required to repair the component store. It does not mean you should download dmdskmgr.dll from a DLL website.
Use a Windows installation source that closely matches your installation. The source should match:

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Windows edition
- Windows build
- Language
- Architecture, such as 32-bit or 64-bit
Microsoft documents this source-based command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to the matching Windows repair source. The source may come from suitable Windows installation media or another supported repair location.

After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Do not use an arbitrary ISO, an older Windows release, or a DLL copied from another computer. A mismatched source can leave the component store in a worse state.
Fix 3: Check Windows security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes.
Antivirus software can quarantine a Windows file, although the reviewed evidence does not establish a recurring false-positive campaign specifically involving dmdskmgr.dll.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
dmdskmgr.dll. - Check the detected file path, publisher, and reason for detection.
Do not restore a quarantined file solely because its filename looks familiar. First scan the computer and confirm that the file is a genuine Microsoft component. If malware is suspected, complete the security scan before attempting repairs.
If a trusted security product removed the file, repairing Windows with DISM and SFC is safer than copying the quarantined file back manually.

Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes, if a restore point exists.
System Restore can roll back system files and settings without removing personal documents. It is useful when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or failed software installation.
- Open Start.
- Search for
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected changes, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore depends on an available restore point. It does not replace a backup, and it may not be available on every computer.
Fix 5: Repair Windows through Windows Update
Time needed: 30 to 90 minutes.
Windows 11 includes an option to reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This option is useful when DISM and SFC cannot restore the Windows component store. It reinstalls the current Windows version rather than replacing dmdskmgr.dll as an isolated file.
If the option is unavailable, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important data first and follow Microsoft’s installation guidance.
Fix 6: Check storage drivers only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
A storage driver problem can interfere with Disk Management even when dmdskmgr.dll is present. This is more likely when disks disappear, show warning icons, or fail across several storage utilities.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives.
- Expand Storage controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an error code.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- If an appropriate update is available, select Driver, then Update Driver.
- Restart Windows and test Disk Management.
Use Windows Update or the computer or storage-device manufacturer for driver packages. Do not replace dmdskmgr.dll while ignoring a clearly reported storage-controller problem.

Do not download dmdskmgr.dll manually
Random DLL download pages are risky because the file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, target a different Windows build, or lack a valid Microsoft signature. Even a clean file may not fix the damaged component store or missing dependency that caused the error.
Do not place an unfamiliar copy in both System32 and SysWOW64. Do not rename another DLL to dmdskmgr.dll, and do not use a file from a different Windows release as a substitute.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft installation media, Windows recovery features, DISM, and SFC.
Does regsvr32 fix dmdskmgr.dll?
Usually, no. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command, and registering a system DLL is not the normal fix for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 component corruption.
A historical Microsoft support case for Windows 2000-era Disk Management documented this command:

regsvr32 C:WINNTSystem32dmdskmgr.dll
That command belongs to the old registration problem described for those systems. Do not generalize it to modern Windows. If current Windows reports that dmdskmgr.dll is missing or damaged, use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an in-place repair instead.
What caused the dmdskmgr.dll error?
The most plausible causes are:
| Likely cause | What usually points to it | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged or missing Windows component | Disk Management fails and SFC or servicing logs mention the component | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Component-store corruption | DISM fails or says source files cannot be found | Use a matching repair source |
| Failed Windows update | Error began after an update or interrupted restart | Complete updates, restart, then repair |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security history names the file | Scan first and repair Windows |
| Malware | Other unexplained changes, detections, or disabled security tools | Scan before restoring files |
| Cleanup or debloat utility | Error began after system modification | Use DISM/SFC or an in-place repair |
| Missing dependency | “Specified module could not be found” while the DLL exists | Repair Windows and inspect the broader error |
| Storage-driver problem | Disk or controller warnings in Device Manager | Update the affected driver |
The error can appear when launching Disk Management, but another Windows utility or application may report it if that process loads the Disk Management component. There is no evidence that mainstream games normally own or redistribute this Microsoft system DLL.

Frequently asked questions
Is dmdskmgr.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Microsoft Disk Management Snap-in Support Library and belongs to the Windows Disk Management infrastructure.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. This component is not identified as a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game-runtime file. Installing those packages is not a supported fix for this Windows component.
Can I copy dmdskmgr.dll from another computer?
Do not. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language, or component state. Repair the installed Windows image instead.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may have a missing or damaged dependency, or Windows may reject it because it is corrupt or incompatible. The message does not prove that the named file alone is missing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I create a new Windows user profile?
Only if Disk Management works normally under another account and the failure is clearly profile-specific. A new profile is not a primary repair for a missing Windows component.
What if DISM, SFC, and Windows repair all fail?
Back up important data, then use matching Windows installation media or the computer manufacturer’s recovery process. A clean installation is the most disruptive option and should come after less destructive repairs have failed.
What details should I provide when asking for help?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and architecture, whether diskmgmt.msc opens, the final DISM and SFC messages, recent updates or cleanup actions, and any Device Manager storage-controller errors. Do not upload or download a replacement DLL as a diagnostic shortcut.
