wmiscriptutils.dll is a genuine Microsoft DLL associated with the WMI Object Broker and the WMI Wizard in Visual Studio 2005, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime file. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the legacy application or Visual Studio 2005 component that originally installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file is also identified internally as WMIScriptUtils.DLL or “WMIScriptUtils Module.” Microsoft documented it as part of the WMI Object Broker control used by the WMI Wizard in Visual Studio 2005.
Microsoft listed the file in Visual Studio 2005 Standard, Professional, Team Suite, and several Team editions, but explicitly noted that not every Visual Studio 2005 edition included it. The documented relationship is therefore specific: this is an old Visual Studio component, or a component bundled into software that depended on that Visual Studio installation.
A historical Microsoft and OVAL system record places the file under:

That is an example of an expected product path, not a rule that applies to every installation. A legacy application may instead keep a copy beside its own executable or under its installation directory.
This file is not the same thing as:
- Windows Management Instrumentation itself
- The old
wmic.execommand-line utility - The .NET Framework
- DirectX
- The Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable
The Visual C++ 2005 SP1 redistributable is a separate Microsoft package. Its installers are named vcredist_x86.exe, vcredist_x64.exe, and vcredist_ia64.exe. Installing that package alone is not an established way to restore wmiscriptutils.dll.
Visual Studio 2005 reached the end of Microsoft support in April 2016. If the application still matters, treat it as legacy software and obtain its installer from the original vendor, licensed installation media, or an official Microsoft source.
Causes matched to symptoms
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when starting one old program | That program or one of its bundled components is incomplete | Repair or reinstall that program |
| The error began after an update or uninstall | Files were removed or the installer rolled back | Use the program’s repair or file-verification option |
| The file exists, but Windows says the module could not be found | A dependency may be missing | Repair the owning product and inspect installer logs |
| Antivirus history mentions the file | The DLL may have been quarantined | Verify its path and publisher before restoring it |
| Only a 32-bit application fails | The application may be searching in a different 32-bit location | Repair the 32-bit parent application |
| SFC reports no integrity violations | Windows system files are probably not the source | Stop treating this as a generic Windows DLL problem |
regsvr32 reports a registration error |
The DLL may not support that registration method | Undo that approach and repair the product |
The file is in System32 or SysWOW64 unexpectedly |
A program may have copied it there, or the file may be untrusted | Check its signature, path, and owning installation |
The wording can vary. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. It can also mean that Windows found the DLL but could not load one of its dependencies.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
Do this before copying anything into a Windows folder.
If the error appears at startup
- Write down the exact program name shown in the error window.
- Close the message and open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair option, select Uninstall only after confirming that you still have the program’s installer, license information, and any required data backup. Reinstall it from its original licensed media or the software developer’s official installer.
If the program name is unclear
Check the shortcut:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
- Check Installed apps for a matching product.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key+X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the program failed.
- Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
The executable that produces the message is more useful than the DLL name alone. Do not assume that the last application you installed owns the file.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
For this file, repairing the parent application is normally the most effective solution.
Use the application’s own repair command
Many older installers provide their repair option outside Windows Settings:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Look for Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Complete the installer wizard.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the application again.
If the application has a launcher, open it and look for Verify, Repair, Scan, or Verify files. This is useful when the file was removed during an update.
Reinstall Visual Studio 2005 when it is the owner
If the failing program is Visual Studio 2005 or a tool that explicitly requires it:
- Back up projects, templates, settings, and license information.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Select the relevant Visual Studio 2005 entry.
- Choose Change or Uninstall/Change.
- Select the repair option if the original installer provides one.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the damaged installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original Visual Studio 2005 installer from trusted media.
- Apply the appropriate Visual Studio 2005 service pack and security updates from Microsoft.
- Restart Windows again and test the application.
Microsoft’s security bulletin for the WMI Object Broker vulnerability identified an updated minimum version for vulnerable copies. That historical threshold does not mean you should download a standalone DLL with that version number. Update the complete product installation instead.

If the old software is not essential, replacing it with a supported application is safer than keeping an unmaintained development component active on a current computer.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software may remove a legacy DLL because it is old, unsigned, modified, or associated with a vulnerable component. Do not restore it solely because the application displays a missing-file message.
Windows Security
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand a matching detection.
- Record the original path and detection name.
- Confirm that the file belonged to the trusted application you are repairing.
Only restore or allow the file if all of these are true:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- The parent application came from legitimate installation media.
- The original path matches that application.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are trustworthy where available.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as malicious.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unexpected System32 or SysWOW64 location, do not whitelist it automatically. Scan the computer and reinstall the parent application from trusted media.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter restoring a quarantined file, run the application’s repair process. That replaces the file through the installer and is preferable to leaving an independently restored copy in place.
Fix 4: Check architecture before repairing files
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. That does not mean the same DLL should be copied into both System32 and SysWOW64.
In Windows terminology:
System32normally contains 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.- A 32-bit application normally searches its own directory and 32-bit locations.
- A 64-bit application normally requires a compatible 64-bit DLL and dependencies.
For a legacy program, determine its architecture from the product documentation or installer. Then repair that exact application using its matching installer. Do not use a third-party archive’s “x86” or “x64” label as proof that a DLL is suitable.
If the application was copied from another computer rather than installed, reinstall it properly. Copying only the executable and DLL files often leaves out dependencies, registry settings, services, and configuration data.

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not general tools for recreating a missing Visual Studio 2005 file.
Use them when you also see broader Windows problems, such as damaged built-in applications, repeated system-component errors, failed Windows updates, or corruption reported by Windows itself.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft instructs users to run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows and the application again. If it reports no integrity violations, return to repairing the legacy application. If the commands report that they could not complete, restart Windows and run them again from an elevated Command Prompt, then check Windows Update and the Event Viewer logs.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of repeating SFC and DISM while trying to determine what changed; its free scan shows reported problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns wmiscriptutils.dll remains the definitive fix.

Do not expect SFC to restore the file unless Windows identifies it as a protected Windows component. This DLL’s documented relationship is with legacy Visual Studio software.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the application points to one
A driver update is not a normal fix for wmiscriptutils.dll. Consider it only if the failing application also reports a device, graphics, storage, or hardware-initialization error.
Check Device Manager
- Press Windows key+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing program.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For graphics, chipset, storage, or specialized hardware, use the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Avoid driver packages that do not identify the hardware manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify stale drivers when you are hunting through many hardware entries; its free scan reports what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for this DLL, and repairing or reinstalling the owning application remains the correct fix when no device error is present.
Fix 7: Check dependencies when the file exists but will not load
If wmiscriptutils.dll is present in the expected application directory but the program still says the module cannot be found, the named file may be loading incorrectly because another dependency is absent or incompatible.
Proceed as follows:
- Do not move the DLL to another folder.
- Open the application’s installation directory.
- Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Check Details for the publisher and product information.
- Record the file path without changing it.
- Open the application’s installer or repair logs.
- Look for missing runtime, side-by-side, or dependency errors.
- Run the application’s repair process again.
- If necessary, use a reputable dependency-analysis tool in a controlled environment to identify the missing library.
Do not infer that the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 redistributable is required just because the application is old. Install a runtime only when the application vendor or its installer specifically identifies it, and use Microsoft’s official package matching the application’s architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does regsvr32 fix this DLL
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is a registration utility for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command, and there is no verified evidence that wmiscriptutils.dll should be manually registered.
Do not run this automatically:
regsvr32 wmiscriptutils.dll
A registration error can indicate that the DLL is not a self-registering component, that the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version of regsvr32 was used, that dependencies are missing, or that the installation is damaged. Use registration only when the product’s documentation explicitly requires it and identifies the correct command and architecture.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading wmiscriptutils.dll from an unverified DLL archive can introduce:
- Malware or a modified binary
- The wrong historical version
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependent files
- A file with no trustworthy publisher signature
- A persistent problem because the owning application remains damaged
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also cause unrelated applications to load the wrong library. It does not recreate the installer’s configuration or prove that the file belongs there.
Use the original application installer, licensed Visual Studio 2005 media, or Microsoft’s official Visual Studio documentation and download pages instead. If manual copying is unavoidable, restore only a verified file from the same trusted installation media, matching the application’s architecture and product version.
If the error returns after reinstalling
A recurring error usually means the file is being removed, the wrong executable is being repaired, or the application is incompatible with the current Windows installation.

Is the file dangerous or obsolete
The file is old, but age alone does not prove that a copy is malware. Verify the publisher, digital signature, file path, version information, and owning installation.
Microsoft documented a serious historical ActiveX vulnerability involving the WMI Object Broker component. That matters when the DLL is found on an old development computer, but it does not prove that every current missing-file message is an attack. Keep legacy software updated as far as its official support allows, isolate it when practical, and replace it when a supported alternative exists.
FAQ
Is wmiscriptutils.dll a Windows system file?
It is a Microsoft DLL, but it is not established as an ordinary Windows 10 or Windows 11 inbox component. It is associated with Visual Studio 2005’s WMI Object Broker and related legacy software.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Which Visual Studio editions included it?
Microsoft identified Visual Studio 2005 Standard, Professional, Team Suite, and several Team editions as affected, while noting that not every edition included the file.
Is it part of WMI or WMIC?
It is related to the WMI Object Broker used by the Visual Studio WMI Wizard. That does not make it the WMI service itself or the wmic.exe utility.
Should I install Visual C++ 2005?
Only if the affected application specifically requires that runtime. The Visual C++ redistributable is separate and is not established as a package that installs wmiscriptutils.dll.
Can SFC restore the file?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows components. Repair the legacy application or Visual Studio installation first.

Does the error identify the program that owns the DLL?
Not necessarily. The message identifies the library the failing process requested, not always the product that installed it. Use the executable name, shortcut target, Installed apps list, and Event Viewer to identify the owner.
Why does a modern application request an old DLL?
It may contain a legacy plugin, an old development tool, a bundled component, or an installer dependency that was never updated. Repair the specific application rather than treating the request as proof that Windows is missing a current runtime.
Should I put the file in both System32 and SysWOW64?
No. That is unsafe and can create architecture conflicts. Repair the product in its original installation directory with the correct installer.
