In Warzone 2.0 DMZ, the best loot is not automatically the item with the highest sale price. Keep items that advance your mission or keep your operator alive, then use remaining backpack space for cash and saleable valuables you can realistically carry to an extraction. Extracted cash, weapons, and other items move into between-match Storage, while later systems such as the Wallet and Secure Backpack change what can persist after a run or survive elimination.
The mechanics below describe the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ rules and documented Season 03–04 updates from 2022–2023. They are not confirmation that this version of DMZ remains available or unchanged in October 2026. A separate official guide describes a different Modern Warfare 4 DMZ experience in Hajin with its own Forward Operating Base and stash/loadout station; do not assume the Warzone 2.0 rules apply there.

What “valuable” means in DMZ
DMZ gives every item a Cash value, and items can be exchanged at Buy Stations. That makes valuables useful for two different reasons: they can fund purchases during the current infiltration, and they can satisfy a mission or unlock a progression objective. The official overview also identifies hidden caches as sources of valuable item drops.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no source-supported, permanent list of one universally best loot item. Value changes with your mission, available backpack space, equipment condition, squad situation and the likelihood that you can reach an extraction. A high-priced item that forces you to abandon a required objective item is often the worse choice.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
Use this priority order
- Mission-critical items: Keep anything required by an active faction mission, contract or objective unless carrying it makes survival impossible.
- Immediate survival and equipment: Armor-related supplies, ammunition, weapons, tactical equipment and other gear that improves the current run generally matter more than a modest cash gain.
- Cash and saleable valuables: Fill remaining capacity with items that have a useful Cash value, especially when you are close to a Buy Station purchase or a mission threshold.
- Low-value duplicates: Drop or swap redundant items when a better mission, survival or cash opportunity appears.
This framework answers “What loot is worth keeping?” without pretending that a single item wins on every map or season.
How the backpack and containers work
Your equipped Loadout has limited capacity. Items that exceed what you can carry in that Loadout go into the Backpack. The documented examples include cash, additional ammunition, weapons, equipment and valuables. The Backpack is therefore both your working inventory and the part of your run most exposed to loss if the operator is eliminated.
Taking items from a container
Items in a chest, duffel bag, cache or other container are not automatically collected. Select each item individually. This matters when a container includes several choices and your pack has only one open slot: take the mission item or survival upgrade first, then decide whether a saleable item deserves the remaining space.

You can deliberately drop an item or swap it for another item. Before replacing something, check whether it is tied to a mission, whether it is a weapon you can afford to lose, and whether the replacement actually improves your current plan. A full backpack is a selection problem, not a signal to grab everything.
Rank #2
A practical capacity check
- Reserve space for the item your mission still requires.
- Keep enough ammunition and equipment for the route to extraction, not just the next building.
- Use spare slots for cash or valuables only after those needs are covered.
- Recheck the backpack before entering a high-risk area; a valuable item is useless if it prevents you from taking a required key or objective.
What is the stash, and what survives extraction?
The original overview calls the between-match inventory Storage. Anything successfully extracted—including cash, weapons and other items—is retained there. You can equip stored gear or move it into the Backpack for a later infiltration. In everyday player language, “stash” often refers to this retained inventory, but the documented system name is Storage.
Storage versus the Wallet
Season 04 separately introduced a Wallet for retaining extracted cash outside the match. The Wallet is not the same as the items in Storage and not the same as cash currently carried in a Backpack. Its capacity and access are expanded through objectives at the Forward Operating Base (FOB). Treat these as three distinct places or states:
| System or state | What it holds | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Backpack | Items carried during the current infiltration, including cash, weapons, equipment, ammunition and valuables. | Determines what you can use, sell or extract right now; ordinary contents are exposed if you are eliminated. |
| Storage (often called the stash) | Cash, weapons and other items successfully extracted from a run. | Provides equipment for later infiltrations and is the documented between-match inventory in the original overview. |
| Wallet | Extracted cash retained outside the match under Season 04 rules. | Preserves cash between runs; unlocks and capacity increases are tied to FOB objectives. |
Do not collapse Storage, Wallet cash and operator-held gear into one pool. Their retention rules and purposes differ by the documented season system.
Active Duty Operators and retained gear
Season 03 added Active Duty Operators and operator-specific equipment rules. Those additions mean that what survives a run can depend on the operator and the item category, not merely on whether an item has a price. Check the season-specific inventory screen and item labels before assuming an item is protected.
What happens to loot if you die?
Under the original overview, Backpack contents are lost when the operator dies, with Weapon Blueprints listed as an exception. A squad revive can change the outcome: being downed is not automatically the same as the operator ultimately dying. If the team revives you, the run can continue and the Backpack is not treated as a final death loss.
Season 04’s beginner guidance specifically describes noninsured weapons and Keys among items that can be lost. Season 03’s Secure Backpack is a defined exception: for that Active Duty Operator, it protects specified non-Contraband and non-on-soldier items after elimination. These statements are item- and version-specific, so they should not be turned into a blanket promise that every item survives death.
Death-risk decision table
| Item or situation | Documented treatment | How to play around it |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Backpack contents under the original overview | Lost on death; Weapon Blueprints are excepted. | Do not keep irreplaceable mission items in a high-risk area without a clear extraction plan. |
| Noninsured weapons and Keys in Season 04 guidance | Identified as losses that can occur on death. | Use them when the objective justifies the risk and leave with them before taking unnecessary fights. |
| Secure Backpack coverage in Season 03 | Specified non-Contraband, non-on-soldier items are retained for that Active Duty Operator after elimination. | Confirm that the exact item qualifies; protection is not universal and is tied to the documented operator system. |
| Weapon Blueprints | Listed as an exception to the original Backpack-loss rule. | Do not assume the exception applies to every weapon, contraband item or later-season inventory category. |
How extraction works
Extraction is the end condition that turns a risky haul into retained inventory. The original Al Mazrah overview describes regular exfil locations as the sure way out: call the helicopter, survive the response, board it and leave. Calling an exfil reveals the location to rival squads and attracts AI combatants, so the extraction itself is a public fight rather than a quiet inventory screen.
Regular exfil sites
- Open the map and identify an available exfil location that fits your route and remaining supplies.
- Approach only after checking nearby buildings, sightlines and likely enemy-player approaches.
- Call the helicopter. The activation exposes the site to other squads and triggers an AI response.
- Hold the area until the helicopter arrives. Use cover, conserve ammunition and avoid chasing players away from the extraction zone.
- Board the helicopter and remain inside until the exfil completes. Leaving the area early forfeits the immediate extraction opportunity.
Final exfil
The regular sites are finite. After those opportunities are used, a final exfil appears. It is a fallback, not proof of safety: surviving squads know that the final route matters, and the late timing can compress every team into one location. If your backpack contains mission-critical or hard-to-replace items, plan for a regular exfil rather than assuming the final helicopter will be uncontested.
Hostage Rescue
A Hostage Rescue contract provides another extraction route. It is useful when normal exfil sites are compromised or when the contract route better matches your location, but it still requires completing the contract and surviving the resulting movement. Treat it as an alternative objective with its own time and combat cost, not as a risk-free escape.
Season-specific alternatives
Season 03 described additional options including Private Exfil and Heavy Chopper extraction. Availability, cost, activation conditions and map behavior belong to that season’s rules. If you are playing a later or separate DMZ implementation, verify that the option appears in the current interface before building a route around it.
Comparing extraction choices
| Option | How it is obtained | Exposure and trade-off | Version qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular exfil | Travel to a marked exfil and call the helicopter. | Location is revealed to rival squads; AI responds while you wait. | Original Warzone 2.0 overview. |
| Final exfil | Appears after the finite regular exfil sites are used. | Late-match timing concentrates surviving teams and leaves less room for recovery. | Original overview. |
| Hostage Rescue extraction | Complete the Hostage Rescue contract. | Requires contract completion and movement under pressure; not a guaranteed quiet route. | Original overview. |
| Private Exfil | Season-specific extraction option described in the Season 03 update. | Use depends on the rules and availability of that season’s system. | Season 03 description. |
| Heavy Chopper | Season-specific heavy-helicopter extraction described in Season 03. | Conditions and availability are tied to that update, so confirm the current map UI. | Season 03 description. |
The sources establish these choices and their broad risks, but they do not establish a universal safest route or a numeric success ranking.

Before infiltration
- Choose the mission or contract that gives the run its purpose.
- Decide which weapon, key or equipment item you are willing to risk.
- Leave enough expected capacity for objective items rather than filling every slot immediately.
- Identify at least one regular exfil and a fallback such as another site, Hostage Rescue or the final exfil.
During the loot route
- Search containers individually and take mission items first.
- Replace weak or redundant gear only when the upgrade improves survival or the route.
- Sell or retain valuables according to the next purchase or objective, not an imagined universal tier list.
- Recheck the map after major fights. A nearby extraction is usually more useful than one additional low-priority building.
At extraction
- Approach from cover and clear likely angles before calling the helicopter.
- Expect both AI and rival squads once the site is activated.
- Defend the zone instead of pursuing a retreating opponent and losing the boarding window.
- After extraction, verify that the intended cash, weapons and other items appear in Storage or, where applicable, the Wallet.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The most expensive item is always best.”
Fix: Rank mission relevance and survival utility ahead of Cash value. The official material confirms that items have values, not that one item is permanently optimal.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
“Loot in a container is already mine.”
Fix: Select each item manually. Check the backpack after every swap so you do not leave with an empty slot that could have held an objective item.
“The stash, Wallet and Backpack are the same thing.”
Fix: Use Storage for extracted inventory, Wallet for the Season 04 retained-cash system, and Backpack for what is currently carried.
“Being downed means everything is gone.”
Fix: A squad revive can prevent the final death state. If the operator is eliminated, apply the relevant original, Secure Backpack and item-specific rules instead of assuming every category has identical protection.

Quick checklist
- Is this item required for the selected mission?
- Will it improve survival more than the item it replaces?
- What is its Cash value, and do I have a reason to sell or retain it?
- Can I still carry the ammunition and equipment needed to reach extraction?
- Which death rule applies to this exact item and season?
- Which extraction option is available on the current map, and what will reveal my position?
The official tactical overview captures the mode’s risk in one sentence: “The endgame for every DMZ match is the same: get out or get dropped.” Loot is only valuable once the extraction is complete.
