For most DMZ deployments, loot first and buy selectively. Searching nearby buildings costs no cash and can provide weapons, armor, ammunition, equipment, valuables, and crafting materials that become useful after extraction. Buy when you need a specific item immediately, a mission requirement is time-sensitive, or replacing a wiped loadout is safer than extending a search. Keep a cash reserve for high-impact utility, and remember that both a long loot route and a Buy Station visit expose you to enemy players and AI.
First, identify which DMZ you are playing
DMZ mechanics are not identical across documented versions. The 2022–23 Warzone 2.0 implementation used in-match Buy Stations, Backpack storage, Contraband weapons, bartering and Contraband Workbenches. The 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide describes a Forward Operating Base (FOB), a rotating Vendor, a Gunsmith, persistent stash storage and progression-linked unlocks. Advice that is correct for one system can be wrong in the other, so use the matching column below.

| Mechanic | 2022–23 Warzone 2.0 DMZ | 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent home between deployments | Backpack and extracted inventory supported future runs, but the documented loop centered on in-match storage and extraction. | The FOB is the home between deployments; the Stash holds weapons, gear, 3D Printer Ingredients and other loot types. |
| Purchasing location | In-match Buy Stations (Shops) with cash prices and limited quantities. | A Vendor in the FOB ecosystem; it unlocks at DMZ Player Level 5 and rotates its wares daily. |
| Weapon customization | Contraband Workbench lets you add or remove unlocked attachments from Contraband or Insured Weapons for cash. | A Gunsmith is tied to FOB progression and unlocks. |
| Alternative to cash purchases | Season 03 added station bartering recipes for gear, streaks, self-revive kits and keys. | Check the current Vendor, Gunsmith and progression rules; do not assume the older station recipes apply. |
The comparison that follows calls the older location a Buy Station and the newer home-base seller a Vendor. When a recommendation depends on a version, it is labeled explicitly.

Backpack value in Warzone 2.0 DMZ
The official Warzone 2.0 DMZ overview describes item gathering as storage management in a large Backpack. Your backpack can hold weapons, equipment, valuables and more, including cash, extra ammunition, additional weapons and equipment. A successful extraction turns that haul into future capability rather than merely a temporary advantage in one match.

- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
Loot also has a weapon-specific payoff: extracting with a Contraband weapon unlocks its base weapon across other modes, according to the official overview. That makes a free weapon found in a building potentially more valuable than its immediate damage output.
Persistent materials in the 2026 system
The 2026 FOB guide says the Stash stores weapons, gear, 3D Printer Ingredients and other loot types. It instructs operators to offload items after every extraction for later deployments. Documentation for the current system also states that extracted DMZ Cash, 3D Printer Ingredients and other content are shared across active Operators. A safe, modest loot run can therefore improve more than the operator who carried it out.
The extraction condition
Looting has no cash price, but it is not free. It consumes time, adds travel distance and increases the number of fights that can occur before exfiltration. The value is realized only if the squad extracts. A backpack full of valuables lost on the final approach has a realized value of zero for that deployment, even if the theoretical contents were excellent.

- Loot first when: the target item is common, nearby buildings are low risk, and you already have a plausible exfil route.
- Stop looting when: your required gear is covered, the circle or timer is forcing movement, or the next building requires a dangerous detour.
- Carry for the future when: the item is a 2026 Stash resource or a Contraband weapon that can support another deployment.
What buying provides
Buy Stations in the 2022–23 implementation
The official overview lists gas masks, killstreaks, armor and other equipment among Buy Station gear. Each Shop has limited quantities, and item lists can differ from one Shop to another. Custom weapons are available for a considerable fee. Buying is therefore a controlled way to obtain a known category of item, not a guarantee that every station has the exact replacement you want.
The 2026 Vendor
In the 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide, the Vendor unlocks at DMZ Player Level 5. Its wares rotate day to day, while higher player level and FOB upgrades improve the gear that can appear. This makes purchasing a progression and availability decision as well as a cash decision: a player may have enough money but still lack the required level, upgrade or current rotation.
Why a purchase can be worth the exposure
A station or Vendor visit creates a predictable destination. Other squads can anticipate that route, and in the older system the station itself can be contested. The benefit is speed and certainty: if the needed armor, streak or other utility is in stock, you can finish the loadout without opening another dozen containers. Spend when that certainty changes the odds of completing a mission or extracting.
Looting and buying compared on four practical axes
| Axis | Looting | Buying | Decision question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash efficiency | No cash is required, and the haul can include cash, valuables and future resources. | Converts cash directly into a known item, sometimes at a very high price. | Is the item common enough to find before the added search risk exceeds the price? |
| Time | Usually slower because you must search containers and travel between buildings. | Usually faster if the station or Vendor has the item in stock and is reachable. | Is a delay more dangerous than spending now? |
| Risk | More rooms and movement create more opportunities for AI or players to engage you. | The destination is predictable and can be watched, camped or contested. | Which route exposes the squad for less time and in fewer predictable places? |
| Persistence | Extracted gear and materials can feed later deployments; a Contraband extraction can unlock a base weapon. | The purchased item still has to survive the current deployment to provide value. | Will this item improve the next run, or only solve the next five minutes? |
For established squads, add a fifth axis: can bartering or a workbench meet the same need with materials or a modification fee instead of cash?
Historical prices explain why cash discipline matters
Season 06 patch notes from 2023 document the following Warzone 2.0 Buy Station changes. These are historical values, not a promise of current prices in any later implementation.
| Item | Documented price change | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Munitions Box | $1,000 to $5,000 | A routine resupply could consume five times the earlier cash amount. |
| Gas Mask | $2,000 to $3,500 | Useful protection, but still a meaningful deduction early in a run. |
| Medium Backpack | $5,000 to $6,500 | Capacity has a direct effect on how much loot can be extracted. |
| Large Backpack | $30,000 to $50,000 | A major reserve purchase rather than an automatic upgrade. |
| 3-Plate Carrier | $35,000 to $65,000 | High survivability value, but expensive enough to compete with information or streak purchases. |
| UAV | $12,000 to $100,000 | The documented increase shows how a powerful information tool can consume an entire reserve. |
| Advanced UAV | $12,000 to $200,000 | A top-end purchase requiring a deliberate tactical reason. |
| Precision Airstrike or Cluster Strike | $12,000 to $30,000 | Offensive utility becomes less attractive when the same cash is needed for survival gear. |
| Revive Pistol | $7,500 to $10,000 | A focused recovery tool whose value depends on squad composition and mission risk. |
Use these figures as a discipline lesson, not a current shop list. Before buying in an older-version match, check the displayed station price and stock. A purchase is justified when its immediate tactical value is greater than the expected value of the loot route that cash would replace.
When looting is the better opening move
Fresh or wiped operator
Start with nearby, low-risk buildings rather than crossing the map for a premium area. Your first priorities are a usable weapon, armor and ammunition. Once those are covered, collect cash and mission-relevant items while moving toward an exfil or objective. Buy only the missing critical item: for example, a specific protective piece or recovery tool that the local search failed to produce.
- Enter the closest defensible buildings and clear the immediate rooms.
- Take the first serviceable weapon instead of spending early cash on a replacement.
- Fill the minimum ammunition and armor requirement for the next fight.
- Mark the nearest safe exfil and decide how much additional searching fits the remaining time.
- Use a Buy Station only for the gap that would otherwise force a dangerous detour.
Common target, safe route
If the item you need commonly appears in the zone and the route passes through buildings you can clear quickly, looting preserves cash and may produce additional valuables. Set a stop condition before entering: once you have the item, leave rather than turning a successful search into an unnecessary second lap.

Loot with a future deployment in mind
In the 2026 system, 3D Printer Ingredients and other Stash resources can support future Operators. In the older system, an extracted Contraband weapon can unlock its base weapon across modes. Those persistent benefits make a controlled extra search worthwhile after the immediate loadout is secure, provided the exfil route remains viable.
When buying is the better move
A mission has a hard requirement
Loot while traveling toward the objective, but do not spend the entire deployment opening random containers for one specific requirement. If the station has the required item and the cash cost is lower than the risk of another search, buy it and continue. In the 2022–23 system, confirm the Shop’s limited stock before committing to the detour.
You need a known item immediately
Buying is strongest when randomness is the main threat: a squad needs a particular utility item for an imminent push, a revive plan or an exfil crossing. The value is not merely the object; it is the time saved and the certainty gained before the next engagement.
Replacing a wiped loadout
After a wipe, a fast, modest purchase can restore momentum. Avoid rebuilding every slot at once. Buy the item that changes survivability first, then use nearby loot for ammunition, secondary equipment and upgrades. A large historical price such as $65,000 for a 3-Plate Carrier or $50,000 for a Large Backpack illustrates why replacing everything immediately can leave no reserve for the rest of the match.
Information or utility creates a clear advantage
High-impact purchases such as a UAV can be worth more than routine armor when they reveal a route, locate a threat or secure an exfil. The documented 2023 price changes also show the danger: a UAV listed at $100,000 or an Advanced UAV at $200,000 can erase the reserve. Buy one only when the squad has a specific plan for the information and enough cash remains for an emergency recovery.
Bartering can beat both a search and a cash purchase
Season 03 added Buy Station bartering recipes in the older DMZ. The official overview says recipes could produce plate carriers, backpacks, killstreaks, self-revive kits and keys, with zone-specific options and dozens of combinations. If the squad already carries the ingredients, bartering can be more efficient than spending cash or gambling on another random container.
Barter decision check
- Verify that the recipe is available in the current Exclusion Zone.
- Count the ingredients you would surrender, including anything needed for a later mission.
- Compare the barter result with the station’s cash price and the expected danger of finding the item normally.
- Complete the exchange only when the resulting item solves an immediate need or has clear extraction value.
Do not transfer these Season 03 recipes automatically to the 2026 Vendor system. The current guide uses a rotating Vendor and progression gates; consult the options shown in your version.
Workbenches make scavenged weapons more valuable
The Contraband Workbench in the Warzone 2.0 implementation lets operators add or remove unlocked attachments from Contraband or Insured Weapons for a cash fee. This changes the weapon calculation: a mediocre weapon found for free may become a dependable one after a targeted modification, eliminating the need to buy a replacement.

- At the workbench, identify only the attachment that fixes the current weakness, such as range, recoil or optic clarity.
- Pay the modification fee instead of purchasing a full custom weapon when the resulting setup is sufficient.
- Test the weapon in the next engagement before spending on additional changes.
The 2026 guide describes a Gunsmith tied to FOB progression and unlocks rather than the older in-match workbench rules. Treat the Gunsmith as the current system’s customization path and check which options your level and FOB upgrades have opened.

Step 1: Name the actual need
Separate survival needs (armor, ammunition, revive capability), mission requirements, information and convenience. “Better gear” is too vague to justify a purchase; “one more plate carrier before a high-value contract” is a decision you can evaluate.
Step 2: Estimate the safe loot route
Ask how many buildings, fights and minutes stand between the squad and the likely item. Include the return trip and exfil exposure, not only the first container.

- IMPROVES GRIP - Mid-rise hybrid, 6.5mm left stick upgrades grip and movemet

Step 3: Check availability and version rules
For 2022–23 DMZ, inspect the Buy Station’s actual stock and quantity limit. For 2026 DMZ, check the FOB Vendor’s current rotation, your DMZ Player Level and relevant FOB upgrades. An unavailable item has an infinite search cost at that location.
Step 4: Protect a reserve
Keep enough cash for the next predictable emergency: a recovery purchase, a necessary station interaction or a utility item that secures exfil. The reserve amount is personal to the squad’s mission and map; the principle is to avoid spending down to zero on routine armor or ammunition.
Step 5: Choose the least exposed option
Compare the danger of searching more buildings with the danger of approaching a known station. A short interior loot route may be safer than a heavily watched Buy Station; a station beside your objective may be safer than a long cross-map search.
Step 6: Reassess after every major gain
Once the required item is secured, stop treating additional loot as free. Recalculate the extraction route, remaining time and value of the next container. The correct moment to leave is often immediately after the squad becomes mission-capable.
Recommended patterns by player state
| Situation | Recommended pattern |
|---|---|
| Fresh or wiped operator | Loot nearby low-risk buildings for armor, ammunition and a usable weapon; buy only the missing critical item. |
| Mission with a hard requirement | Loot on the way to the objective; buy or barter the requirement if available and cheaper than another dangerous search. |
| Established operator with cash | Spend on high-impact information or utility when it creates a clear tactical advantage; avoid draining the reserve for routine supplies. |
| Weapon recovery | Use a looted Contraband weapon and modify it at the applicable workbench or Gunsmith before buying a new weapon. |
| Current 2026 DMZ | Review the FOB Vendor rotation and Gunsmith unlocks before deployment; offload extracted resources to the Stash so one safe run can support another Operator. |
Common mistakes and fixes
Spending before checking nearby rooms
Symptom: cash is gone, then the needed armor or ammunition appears in the next building. Fix: perform a short, low-risk opening sweep before the first purchase unless the squad is already under immediate threat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming every station has the same inventory
Symptom: a squad crosses the map expecting a known item and finds it unavailable. Fix: read the current station inventory and quantity limit; in the 2026 system, check the Vendor’s daily rotation and progression requirements.
Chasing one item after the mission is already viable
Symptom: the squad has armor and weapons but keeps searching until the exfil route becomes unsafe. Fix: set a stop condition before looting and leave once the required capability is secured.
Buying power without a plan
Symptom: a costly streak or information item is purchased, but no one is ready to exploit it. Fix: state the use case first—scout an exfil, avoid a player squad or start a coordinated push—then buy only if the timing supports it.
Mixing old and current mechanics
Symptom: a player searches for an in-match workbench, assumes Season 03 barter recipes apply, or expects a fixed shop list in the 2026 system. Fix: identify the game and season before deploying, then follow the mechanics shown by that version.
Recommended Free Tools
Forgetting that extraction is the payoff
Symptom: the backpack is full but the squad has no safe exit. Fix: plan exfil before the final loot room, preserve movement and combat resources, and treat every extra container as optional once the route is compromised.
Bottom line for most deployments
Loot first because it preserves cash and can produce both immediate equipment and persistent value. Buy selectively when speed, certainty or a mission requirement outweighs the cost and exposure of another search. In the older Warzone 2.0 DMZ, use the displayed Buy Station inventory, historical price scale and available barter recipes or Contraband Workbench to stretch your reserve. In the 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, check the FOB Vendor rotation, player-level gates, Gunsmith unlocks and Stash capacity before treating a purchase as available. The strongest squad is not the one that spends the most; it is the one that arrives at exfil with the required gear, enough reserve to recover, and loot that improves the next deployment.
