First, check which DMZ you mean. The original Warzone 2.0 DMZ stored extracted loot between matches and put most items in your backpack at risk when you died. The separate DMZ planned for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 uses rank XP, FOB unlocks, cash-funded weapon building, and recipe-based gear crafting. As of October 7, 2026, the new mode is still prelaunch, and its complete death-loss and seasonal-reset rules have not been established.
Which DMZ progression system are you asking about?
There are two different modes behind the name. The original DMZ launched as part of Warzone 2.0 in 2022. A new DMZ is scheduled to launch with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026. The old mode’s rules do not establish how the new one handles inventory or resets. Call of Duty’s original DMZ overview and the June 2026 Xbox Wire interview with the new mode’s developers describe distinct systems.
What happens to your loot in the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ?
After extraction
Extracted cash, weapons, and other items went into Storage for use in later matches. Extraction was the way to bank the items you had collected during a run, rather than leave them on your active operator. Call of Duty’s November 2022 launch overview describes this original-mode rule.
If you died
Death generally cost the contents of your Backpack. Weapon blueprints were the exception: they were not permanently lost, but could be inaccessible for a period, usually a few hours, according to the launch overview. That distinction matters: a temporary cooldown was not the same as losing a blueprint forever.

Season 03: Active Duty Operators and Secure Backpacks
In Season 03, the original mode added three Active Duty Operator slots. Operators had separate on-soldier gear, so you could choose between differently equipped operators for separate runs. The season’s Secure Backpack rules preserved eligible items between runs for that Active Duty Operator if eliminated: the items had to be non-contraband and not on-soldier. These were dated original-mode mechanics, not announced rules for the new DMZ. Call of Duty’s Season 03 overview documents the feature.
What did the original DMZ reset in Season 04?
Season 04 changed original-mode progression and reset parts of it. The update introduced passive FOB objectives that unlocked benefits such as insured weapon slots, more Wallet capacity, larger stashes, personal exfil, barter recipes, Buy Station discounts, and access to Urgent Missions. Its Wallet let players extract and store cash outside an exclusion zone for a later infiltration.

That specific update reset faction mission progress and DMZ inventory: contraband returned to starting weapons, keys and mission inventory were emptied, and faction progress and earlier insured-slot unlocks were reset. Earned blueprint unlocks and prior mission or boss rewards remained, except for contraband and keys. These are the terms of the documented Season 04 reset, not a general promise about every later season or the new game. Call of Duty’s Season 04 update notes detail the changes.
How progression is planned to work in Modern Warfare 4 DMZ
The following describes public prelaunch plans as of October 7, 2026, not confirmed post-launch behavior. In a June 7, 2026 interview, Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot and Lead Game Designer Jacky Reynolds described a mode built around continued growth across deployments, persistent operator inventories, a Forward Operating Base (FOB), and stations for building loadouts and weapons. Modern Warfare 4 and its DMZ are scheduled for October 23, 2026. Xbox Wire’s developer interview is the primary source for these planned systems.

Rank XP unlocks stations, stash items, and recipes
Joe Cecot said DMZ rank XP is not reduced when you die: “Even if you die, we’re not giving you half XP, nothing like that.” He described rank XP unlocking FOB stations, stash items, and 3D-printer recipes. This means the planned rank track is distinct from whatever carried equipment a death might cost; the interview does not provide a complete item-by-item death-loss table. Xbox Wire’s interview contains the developer’s explanation.
The Boss Board tracks seasonal targets
The FOB’s Boss Board is intended to track lieutenants killed during the season. Dog-tag cases populate the board and create an objective that other squads can contest in a match. The seasonal tracking described here is a feature of the board; it does not establish whether rank, inventory, or other unlocks reset between seasons.

Operators have persistent growth
The developers described backpacks, loadouts, and trait trees tied to individual operators. Cecot gave the example of earning cash with a backup operator to rescue a lost character and continue that character’s progression. The interview does not state a definitive rescue-cost formula, so the example should not be treated as a fixed price or a complete account of what survives a death.
Cash builds weapons; ingredients and recipes make gear
Weapon construction and gear crafting use separate systems. Cash earned during missions and operations is wired to the FOB and funds weapon construction; players can purchase attachments they have unlocked. The cost rises as more attachments are added, and some attachment types cost more than others. As Cecot put it, “In Modern Warfare 4‘s DMZ, Gunsmith is driven by the cash that you find in game.”

The 3D printer instead uses ingredients found in the world. Recipes can enable specific gear to be printed or upgrade the printer. Finding ingredients and recipes therefore serves a different purpose from earning cash or unlocking an attachment. Xbox Wire’s interview describes both economies.
Reported rank-track cap
Windows Central reported a DMZ progression track reaching level 70, with FOB stations and crafting recipes among its unlocks. This is a prelaunch secondary report dated October 5, 2026; confirm the cap and unlock details against official launch documentation once the mode is available. Windows Central’s report is the source for the level-70 figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is still unknown about new-mode deaths and resets?
The available prelaunch sources do not establish which individual items survive operator death, a full seasonal reset policy, or which unlocks carry from one season to another. They also do not give an exact rescue-cost formula. Do not assume the new mode uses the original DMZ’s Backpack loss, Secure Backpack, insured-slot, Wallet, faction-progress, or Season 04 reset rules. Those belong to the earlier game unless official launch or update notes say otherwise.
