If Windows reports “The program can’t start because dnsclientpsprovider.dll is missing from your computer,” “This application failed to start because dnsclientpsprovider.dll was not found,” or “Error loading dnsclientpsprovider.dll,” the file is usually a damaged Windows component rather than an application DLL. In 60 seconds: install pending Windows updates, run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt, run sfc /scannow, restart, and avoid downloading a replacement DLL.
Other possible messages include:
- “dnsclientpsprovider.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
These are possible Windows loader messages, not a universal list tied to one specific application. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that dnsclientpsprovider.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot load.
What dnsclientpsprovider.dll does
DnsClientPSProvider.dll, commonly shown in lowercase as dnsclientpsprovider.dll, is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. It implements the DNS Client WMIv2 provider used by DNS-management WMI and CIM classes in the RootMicrosoftWindowsDns namespace. Microsoft documents support beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Microsoft’s DNS Client provider documentation
The provider supports DNS Client management data, including Name Resolution Policy Table rules and related classes. It is not a graphics runtime, game library, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or .NET assembly.

The expected native location is:
%windir%System32wbemdnsclientpsprovider.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs use Windows’ WOW64 redirection and may interact with the corresponding SysWOW64 system tree. System32 is still the native system directory on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy a DLL manually between these folders. Microsoft’s File System Redirector documentation
A genuine copy should normally be in a Windows component directory and carry a valid Microsoft digital signature. A copy found in a user profile, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves suspicion.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- Windows component corruption or an incomplete system update.
- An interrupted Windows upgrade.
- Antivirus quarantine or removal.
- Disk or filesystem corruption.
- Damaged WMI registration.
- An older management utility requesting a component it does not handle correctly.
- A missing dependency, even though the named DLL is present.
- A malicious or mismatched copy being loaded from the wrong directory.
Think about what changed immediately before the error. Windows Update, a failed upgrade, cleanup software, antivirus activity, a disk problem, malware removal, or a rollback from Windows.old can all explain why a protected system file suddenly stops loading.
There is no identified Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, game, or third-party application that owns this file. If one particular program displays the message, that program may simply be the first thing that calls the Windows DNS or WMI provider.

Fix 1: Install updates, then repair Windows
This is the safest and most likely fix because Windows servicing can restore the correct file, dependencies, permissions, and component registration together.
Check Windows Update
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Retry the program or operation that produced the error.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance before attempting repeated manual repairs.
Run DISM and SFC in order
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Let the scan reach 100 percent.
- Restart the computer and test the affected program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. That is why the order matters. Running SFC first can leave it unable to repair a file when its own repair source is damaged.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact, so investigate dependencies, the calling program, or WMI.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC.
- DISM itself fails: continue to the repair-source section below.
If you want a faster way to identify which Windows components need attention instead of repeatedly hunting through repair output and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the proper fix for this system component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 2: Give DISM a matching repair source
DISM normally obtains clean component files through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable or damaged, Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation source.

Open an elevated Command Prompt as described above and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a Windows installation source that closely matches the installed Windows version and edition. Do not use a randomly downloaded ISO or a source from a different Windows release.
When DISM finishes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart afterward. If the repair still fails, review the DISM and CBS logs or move to System Restore and an in-place repair installation rather than copying a DLL from another computer.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Windows Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined a system file after a detection or false positive.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections.
- Expand any item that refers to the DNS provider or the original file path.
- Confirm the original location, detection details, and Microsoft signature before taking action.
- Update Defender definitions and run a full scan.
Do not blindly choose Allow on device. Restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the system at risk. If the file was in an unexpected application or user folder, quarantine it and scan the machine rather than restoring it.
If a legitimate Microsoft file was removed, repairing Windows with DISM and SFC is safer than manually extracting the quarantined file. It restores the version appropriate for the installed build.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and signature
If the file appears to exist, verify that Windows is looking at the correct copy.

If the file is missing from the expected directory, use DISM and SFC. If it exists and is correctly signed, the problem may be a dependency or the program that is requesting it.
Fix 5: Investigate a missing dependency
A loader can report that the specified module was not found when the named DLL exists but another required component cannot load. This is especially possible after an upgrade, cleanup operation, or architecture mismatch.
Check:
- Event Viewer: Open Start, search for Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs and Application around the failure time.
- Reliability Monitor: Open Start and search for View reliability history. Look for the application failure on the date of the error.
- The affected program’s bitness: an old 32-bit utility may be using a different loading path from a 64-bit Windows component.
- Whether the error occurs only in one old management tool.
Do not solve a dependency error by downloading several unrelated DLLs. Repair Windows first, then identify the process making the request. If only one obsolete utility fails, update or replace that utility rather than changing system files.
Fix 6: Update a related driver only when the evidence points there
dnsclientpsprovider.dll is not a device driver, and there is no established driver package that owns it. Device Manager is relevant only if the error began alongside a network adapter problem, a failed hardware update, or a management utility tied to a specific device.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and any device category related to the failing utility.
- Right-click the suspected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not uninstall an otherwise working network device merely because this DLL appears in an error message. If the failure is clearly tied to stale hardware drivers and you want to avoid hunting through multiple vendor pages and matching each driver manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the scan is free, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional and does not replace Windows component repair.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as the first repair
Some builds of this provider expose registration-related exports, including DllRegisterServer. That does not establish that manually registering the file is the correct repair for a missing or corrupt component.
regsvr32 only invokes a DLL’s registration entry point. It does not restore missing dependencies, repair the component store, fix permissions, or provide the correct Windows build.
Avoid commands such as:
regsvr32 dnsclientpsprovider.dll
Do not run regsvr32 against a downloaded replacement. Use DISM and SFC first. Manual provider registration should be handled only by a specialist following documented procedures appropriate to the exact Windows build and WMI problem.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features without randomly changing them
This provider is not repaired by enabling an unrelated Windows feature. Randomly disabling or enabling .NET, legacy components, or multimedia features can create additional problems.

- Open Start.
- Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the result.
- Note the current state before making changes.
- Change only the feature named by the application’s documented requirements.
- Click OK and restart if requested.
If no documented application requirement points to a feature, leave this area alone and continue with Windows servicing.
Fix 9: Use System Restore or a repair installation
If the error started after a failed update, cleanup operation, or software change and a restore point exists:
- Open Start.
- Search for Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and updates.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert applications, settings, updates, and passwords changed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance
If DISM, SFC, and System Restore do not resolve persistent corruption, an in-place Windows repair installation may be appropriate. Back up important data first and use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.
What not to do
Do not download dnsclientpsprovider.dll from a random DLL website. The replacement may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, target a different Windows build, lack the correct signature, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store.

No. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC to restore the correct protected component.
Does Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no identified runtime package that owns this file. Installing unrelated runtimes is not the normal solution.
Does “module not found” prove the DLL is missing?
No. The named file may exist while one of its dependencies fails to load.
Why does only one old program show the error?
That program may be invoking an obsolete WMI or DNS path, using the wrong architecture, or failing to handle the current Windows build. Repair Windows first, then update or replace the old program if it remains the only source of the message.
