“apss.dll” missing or not found: the errors you may see
Windows may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because apss.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because apss.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading apss.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: apss.dll.”
- “The application could not be started because apss.dll was missing.”

apss.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the Windows servicing stack, particularly Vista- and Windows 7-era installation media and component stores. Microsoft file inventories place it under sourcesservicingstackmiscapss.dll, and servicing-stack updates list it with related servicing files such as apds.dll, apircl.dll, and CbsCore.dll. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, start by repairing the component store:
- Open Start, type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- When it finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and retry the affected program.
This repairs Windows itself rather than hiding the error with an unrelated DLL.

What causes an apss.dll error
The message identifies a missing or unloadable file, but it does not prove that a particular game or application installed apss.dll. No authoritative evidence ties this component to one specific consumer program.
The likely causes are:
- Damaged Windows component-store or WinSxS files
- An interrupted or failed Windows Update
- Disk or filesystem corruption
- Antivirus quarantine
- Malware removal or an impostor file
- A recent update, driver, or software change
- An old Windows installation or installation image missing servicing files
The commonly repeated description “Microsoft InfoTech Storage System Library” comes from third-party file metadata. It should not be treated as the definitive functional description. apss.dll is not verified as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, graphics driver, or game middleware component.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first repair on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Run DISM
- Save open work.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the repair source used by System File Checker. The commands and result messages are documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

SFC may report that it:
- Found no integrity violations
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them
- Found corrupt files but could not repair some of them
Open the program that showed the error. If it starts normally after the restart, the Windows component repair resolved the problem.
If DISM fails, record the error code, restart Windows, install pending updates, and run the command again. If SFC still cannot repair files, inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Then repeat the repair after addressing the component-store problem.

Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave the servicing store inconsistent.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Run the DISM and SFC commands from Fix 1.
Do not install a servicing package simply because its file version looks newer. The package must match the Windows release and architecture.
Microsoft records show apss.dll in servicing-stack packages for older systems, including:
- Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 servicing-stack updates
- x86 and x64 package variants
- Older IA-64 server variants
For example, Microsoft’s Update Catalog lists the architecture-specific packages KB4592510 for Windows 7 and related editions. Do not substitute a Vista package for a Windows 7 package, or an x86 package for a 64-bit installation.

Fix 3: Windows 7 and Vista servicing repair
The strongest official evidence for apss.dll concerns Vista- and Windows 7-era servicing components. If the affected computer is running Windows 7 or Vista, do not use the modern Windows 10/11 procedure blindly.

On Windows 7 or Vista:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct servicing-stack update or System Update Readiness package for the exact Windows edition and architecture.
- Restart again and retry Windows Update.
Microsoft’s Windows 7 repair guidance explains the differences between older servicing systems and later Windows versions. The System Update Readiness Tool, commonly identified as KB947821, is available through the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Modern DISM /RestoreHealth instructions should not be applied to Windows 7 as though it were Windows 10 or Windows 11. If servicing corruption prevents updates from installing, use the matching Microsoft readiness or servicing-stack package instead.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a genuine file, although a missing apss.dll does not automatically mean malware caused the problem.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
apss.dll. - Expand a detection to see its location and status.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only if the file is confirmed to be a genuine Microsoft file, its location is consistent with Windows servicing, and the detection is clearly a false positive. Otherwise, use DISM, SFC, or Windows Update to recreate it.
If the file is located in an unexpected application folder, has no valid Microsoft signature, or continues to trigger detections, leave it quarantined and run a full Windows Security scan. Microsoft provides additional antivirus guidance in its antivirus and antimalware FAQ.
Fix 5: Check the disk for filesystem damage
Disk errors can make a file appear missing or unreadable.
- Back up important documents.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /f C:
- If Windows says the volume is in use, type
Ywhen asked to schedule the check. - Restart the computer.
- Allow CHKDSK to complete.
- After Windows starts, run DISM and SFC again.
The /f option repairs filesystem errors. The check may require a restart, so do not interrupt it unless Windows is unresponsive.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, or software change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore. System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.
Fix 7: Check architecture before using an official package
Both x86 and x64 variants of apss.dll appear in Microsoft servicing packages. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may still depend on a 32-bit system component, so the application’s bitness does not by itself tell you which Windows repair package to install.
Check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Look at System type.
Use the package that matches the Windows installation, not simply the application that displayed the error. Multiple servicing versions can coexist in WinSxS, and the newest-looking DLL is not necessarily compatible.

- Malware
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Invalid or missing Microsoft signatures
- A version mismatch with the component store
- A continuing servicing problem hidden behind a temporary error change
It can also fail because the missing file is only one symptom of broader corruption. The safe sources are Windows Update, Microsoft servicing packages, matching installation media, a trusted restore point, or Windows’ own repair tools.
Do not copy apss.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or a game directory unless a verified Microsoft repair procedure specifically requires it.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not use this as a general repair:
regsvr32 apss.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal DLL repair command. If it reports that the entry point is missing, that is expected for a non-COM servicing component. Microsoft documents the relevant DLL entry points in its regsvr32 documentation.

If Windows cannot boot
Use Windows Recovery Environment:
- Start the computer from Windows recovery options or matching installation media.
- Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt.
- Identify the Windows drive letter, since it may not be
C:. - Run offline SFC using the appropriate Windows drive letter, for example:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:Windows
Replace C: if Windows is mounted under another letter. Microsoft documents offline SFC usage in its WinRE startup troubleshooting guidance.
If offline repair fails, use matching repair installation or recovery media after backing up important data.
FAQ
Is apss.dll a genuine Windows file?
Yes. Microsoft records place it in Windows servicing-stack packages and installation media, particularly for older Windows releases.
Is apss.dll a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No verified evidence supports that. Reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX is not the normal fix for this component.
Is apss.dll installed in System32?
Its location varies by Windows release and servicing state. Microsoft notes that update files may be stored in WinSxS rather than directly in System32.
Should I download apss.dll?
No. Repair Windows through Microsoft’s servicing tools, Windows Update, official packages, matching media, or System Restore.
Does the error prove malware is present?
No. Servicing corruption, failed updates, disk problems, and quarantine are also plausible causes. Check the file’s location, signature, and Windows Security history.

What if the error returns after SFC?
Repair the component store with DISM on Windows 10 or Windows 11, install pending updates, check the disk, and inspect CBS.log. On Windows 7 or Vista, use the appropriate servicing-stack or System Update Readiness package instead.
