Do Artifact Lands Count for Affinity in Magic? Rules, Examples, and Cost Math

Yes. An artifact land you control counts as an artifact for a spell with affinity for artifacts. Each such artifact reduces the spell’s generic mana cost by {1}, while the land remains available to tap for mana. Affinity never removes colored mana symbols, so a spell costing {4}{U} with four artifacts under your control costs {U}, not zero.

The key is that an artifact land has two card types at once: artifact and land. It follows the rules for both types. You play it as a land rather than cast it as an artifact spell, but once it is on the battlefield it is still an artifact permanent and is included in affinity’s count.

The rule in one sentence

For affinity for artifacts, count every artifact permanent you control when you cast the spell. An artifact land is one of those permanents, so each one reduces the generic portion of the cost by {1}. The land’s ability to produce mana is separate from its artifact status.

Question Answer
Does an artifact land count as an artifact? Yes. It has both the artifact and land card types.
Does it reduce affinity’s cost? Yes. Each artifact you control contributes one {1} reduction.
Can you still tap it for mana? Yes, provided it is untapped and otherwise able to tap for mana.
Does affinity reduce colored mana? No. Colored symbols such as {U}, {R}, or {W} remain payable.
Is an artifact land cast as an artifact spell? No. You play it as a land, following the land-play rules.

Why an artifact land has two relevant types

The Comprehensive Rules glossary defines an artifact land as a card that combines the artifact and land types. That combination is not a label for deck construction only; it determines which rules apply to the permanent on the battlefield. Land rules govern how you put it into play, while artifact rules govern effects that look for artifacts.

Because it is a land, you normally play an artifact land during your main phase when you have a land play available. You do not cast it, and it does not use the stack as a spell. That fact sometimes causes confusion: players see that the card was not cast and assume it cannot count for affinity. Affinity does not ask whether you cast your artifacts. It asks how many artifacts you control when you cast the affinity spell.

Once the land is on the battlefield, it is an artifact permanent. A spell or ability that says to count artifacts sees it, even if the land entered the battlefield this turn, is tapped, or has not yet produced mana.

How affinity calculates the discount

Affinity for artifacts is a cost-reduction ability. Wizards’ official explanation describes it as making cards with affinity for artifacts cost {1} less to play for each artifact you control. In current rules language, apply that reduction while determining the total cost of the spell.

  1. Identify the spell’s printed cost. Separate generic symbols, colored symbols, colorless symbols, and any additional costs.
  2. Count the artifacts you control. Include artifact lands and other artifact permanents on the battlefield under your control at that moment.
  3. Reduce only the generic component. Subtract {1} for each artifact. The reduction cannot remove colored symbols.
  4. Pay what remains. If the generic component reaches zero, it stops there; affinity does not create negative mana or turn colored requirements into generic mana.

The reduction is calculated as you cast the spell. If your board changes before you begin casting, the new count is used. After the cost has been determined, changing the number of artifacts does not retroactively change what you owe for that spell.

Worked cost examples

Spell cost before affinity Artifacts you control Affinity reduction Cost to pay
{4}{U} One artifact land and two other artifacts {3} {1}{U}
{2}{R} Five artifacts, including two artifact lands {5}, capped at the generic portion {R}
{6} Six artifacts, including three artifact lands {6} Nothing
{3}{W}{U} Two artifacts {2} {1}{W}{U}

In the second example, five artifacts do not remove the red symbol. They simply eliminate the spell’s {2} generic component. In the third, the six artifacts reduce the entire generic cost to zero; no mana is owed because the spell has no colored requirement.

Why tapping the land does not make it stop counting

An artifact land performs two independent jobs. Its land type lets it have a mana ability, and its artifact type lets it be counted by affinity. Tapping it for mana changes its tapped status and may produce mana, but it does not remove the artifact type.

For example, suppose you control three artifact lands and one artifact creature. You can tap one land for mana and still count all four artifacts while casting an affinity spell, assuming none of them has left the battlefield and you still control them. Tapping a permanent is not sacrificing it, exiling it, or changing its type.

This makes artifact-affinity turns efficient: the same permanent can help reduce the spell’s generic cost and provide some of the mana needed for its colored portion or for another spell. The two benefits are not mutually exclusive.

What counts toward the artifact total

Affinity counts artifacts you control as permanents on the battlefield. The following distinctions matter when checking your total:

  • Artifact lands count. Their land status does not disqualify them.
  • Artifact creatures, artifacts, and artifact tokens count. A token is still a permanent while it remains on the battlefield.
  • Nonartifact lands do not count. A basic land or another land with no artifact type can produce mana but contributes nothing to affinity for artifacts.
  • Cards in your hand, graveyard, library, or exile do not count unless an effect specifically puts them onto the battlefield or changes how the ability evaluates them.
  • An artifact you do not control does not count. Control, not ownership, determines whether it contributes.
  • A permanent that stops being an artifact does not count for the period in which it lacks that type.

If an opponent temporarily controls one of your artifact lands, it is no longer part of your count while they control it. Conversely, an artifact permanent you temporarily control contributes to your affinity total. The relevant question is always, “How many artifacts do I control right now?”

Colored costs, additional costs, and the zero-cost floor

Affinity reduces generic mana symbols only. It does not reduce colored symbols, hybrid requirements, phyrexian symbols, or other requirements that are not generic mana. A spell costing {5}{B}{B} with seven artifacts still requires {B}{B}; affinity can remove the {5}, but it cannot pay the black symbols.

Additional costs are separate from the spell’s mana cost. If a spell asks you to sacrifice a permanent, discard a card, pay life, or make another payment, affinity does not erase that requirement. Likewise, an effect that increases a spell’s cost is applied alongside cost reductions according to the normal cost-determination rules; affinity is not an instruction to ignore other costs.

Generic reductions cannot push a cost below zero. If the spell has {2} generic mana and you control five artifacts, the generic part becomes zero. The extra three artifacts do not produce a mana rebate and do not carry over to another spell.

Timing: when you count your artifacts

You count artifacts during the process of casting the affinity spell, before you pay its final cost. This timing creates several practical consequences:

Removal before casting

If an opponent destroys an artifact land before you start casting the spell, it is absent from the count. You receive no reduction for a permanent that is already in the graveyard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removal after the cost is set

If an opponent responds after you have cast the spell and removes one of your artifact lands, the spell’s already-determined cost does not increase. The spell is on the stack with the cost paid.

Playing a land during the turn

If you play an artifact land before casting the affinity spell, it can count immediately once it is on the battlefield. You do not need to wait for it to untap, and it does not need to have a mana ability available.

Control changes

If control of an artifact changes before you cast the spell, count it only if you control it at the time of casting. Control changes after casting do not rewrite the cost already paid.

Common misunderstandings

  • “It was played, not cast, so it is not an artifact.” Playing a land and casting a spell are different actions. Affinity checks the permanent’s type, not the action used to put it onto the battlefield.
  • “A tapped artifact land cannot count.” Tapped status affects whether you can use the land’s abilities; it does not remove the artifact type.
  • “Affinity pays the colored part too.” It does not. Colored symbols remain exactly as printed unless another effect changes them.
  • “Every land counts because affinity decks use lots of lands.” Only lands that are also artifacts count. A regular land contributes mana but not an artifact toward the reduction.
  • “More artifacts create free mana.” Affinity reduces a spell’s generic cost. It does not create floating mana when the generic portion reaches zero.
  • “The opponent’s artifacts help me.” They do not, unless an effect explicitly changes the counting rule. Affinity counts artifacts you control.

Deck-building implications of artifact lands

Artifact lands are attractive in an affinity shell because they advance two plans at once: they increase the artifact count and provide a land drop that can produce mana. Wizards’ explanation highlights this dual role, noting that artifact lands can be tapped for mana while also reducing the cost of affinity spells.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing among artifact lands is still a deck-building decision rather than a rules shortcut. Consider the color of mana each land produces, whether it enters tapped, what other cards in the deck need, and how many land plays the deck can support. A colorless-producing artifact land may support generic costs but fail to provide a required colored symbol; a colored artifact land may cast the spell but leave fewer options for other turns.

Artifact status also creates exposure to effects that interact with artifacts. An effect that destroys, exiles, or otherwise disables artifacts can affect an artifact land in addition to ordinary land-interaction effects. That vulnerability is part of the trade-off for receiving an extra affinity count from the land.

Format legality is a separate question. The answer here establishes how the rules work, not whether a particular artifact land or affinity card is legal in a specific format on a particular date. Check the current card pool and banned-and-restricted information for the format you intend to play.

Examples of artifact lands

Cards such as Darksteel Citadel and Great Furnace are familiar examples of artifact lands. If you control one of them, it contributes one artifact to affinity for artifacts while retaining its land function. Their individual mana abilities, color production, and legality depend on the card text and the format, so evaluate those details separately from the basic counting rule.

Why artifact lands have a controversial design history

Mark Rosewater’s 2018 Wizards design discussion described artifact lands as unusually powerful and discussed the development problems associated with the original cycle. He wrote that there are not many mechanics for which every card with the mechanic had been banned, “and all banned at once,” identifying artifact lands as an example.

That passage is historical design context. It explains why combining land access, artifact synergies, and affinity reductions attracted concern during development; it is not a current ban-list announcement. Whether a card is legal today must be checked against the rules and list for the relevant format and date.

A quick checklist before you cast an affinity spell

  1. Look at the spell’s generic and colored symbols separately.
  2. Count the artifact permanents you control, including artifact lands and artifact tokens.
  3. Exclude ordinary nonartifact lands, cards outside the battlefield, and artifacts controlled by another player.
  4. Subtract one generic mana for each artifact, stopping when the generic portion reaches zero.
  5. Leave every colored symbol and additional cost intact.
  6. Pay the resulting cost. You may tap artifact lands for mana, and tapping them does not remove them from the artifact count.

The practical answer remains straightforward: an artifact land counts for affinity for artifacts because it is both an artifact and a land. Its being played as a land affects how it enters the battlefield, not whether affinity recognizes it once you control it.
