Equipment carried when the zombie spawns can add more XP. These figures are for Bedrock; an exact current Java value is not established by the sources cited here.
How much XP does each zombie give in Bedrock?

That makes the baby zombie’s base reward 7 XP higher than the adult’s in the documented Bedrock behavior. Microsoft expresses the reward as zero when the last hit was not by a player; otherwise, the base value is increased by a random 1–3 XP for each equipment item. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock zombie behavior reference lists the baby and adult values.

Why can the XP total vary?
The 12 and 5 figures are base rewards, not necessarily the total you will see. A zombie that spawned with equipment can yield an additional 1–3 XP for each equipment item, so two otherwise similar kills may produce different totals. The Minecraft Wiki’s experience table independently lists the same baby and regular zombie values and equipment bonus; it is corroboration, not an official edition-by-edition specification. Does the same answer apply to Java Edition?
Do not treat the Bedrock numbers as a verified, current specification for every Java version. The cited current official reference covers Bedrock, and the secondary wiki table does not establish the figures as an official Java rule across releases. If you need an exact value for a particular Java version or are tuning a farm, check that target release rather than assuming the Bedrock result applies. A Mojang issue about Java 1.18.2 discusses XP reward calculation, but it is not a current cross-version specification: Mojang issue.
