Yes. Enemies can return in caves in Sons of the Forest. The game’s cave information says that, after enemies are killed, at least two mutants naturally respawn in the area each day. That wording confirms recurring cave spawns, but it does not define exactly how large “the area” is or promise that every cave interior refills in exactly the same way.
If you call these enemies “cannibals,” you are using familiar terminology from the earlier game. In Sons of the Forest, the common cave enemies are mutants, also called creepies; Puffies replaced the gray cave cannibals from The Forest. Spawn behavior has also been changed by patches, so an old video or a single cave run should not be treated as a universal rule for every current build.

What the respawn rule actually confirms
The clearest published description of cave spawning states that, after enemies are killed, at least two mutants naturally respawn in the area each day. This is the direct answer to the question: clearing a cave is not necessarily permanent. A later visit can contain enemies again.
Several parts of that sentence matter:
- “At least two” is a minimum in the wording, not a maximum. It does not establish a fixed total for a cave.
- “Naturally respawn” describes an automatic game process rather than a one-time scripted encounter.
- “Each day” gives the recurrence period used by the source, but it does not say that the enemies appear the instant a new day starts or that every player will see the same count at the same time.
- “In the area” is the biggest qualification. The source does not define whether that means a whole cave, a section of a cave, a nearby spawn zone, or another internal region.
Because the area is not precisely defined, the safe conclusion is that cave enemies can return over successive in-game days, not that every room will always contain a predetermined number after exactly one sleep.

Are they cannibals, mutants or creepies?
The terminology causes much of the confusion. Players who came from The Forest often use “cannibals” as a general label for hostile cave inhabitants. The cave enemies described for Sons of the Forest, however, are mutants or “creepies.” The Puffies entry identifies Puffies as the common cave enemy and says they replace the gray cave cannibals from the earlier game.
| Term | What it refers to in this context | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Cannibals | An informal term many players carry over from The Forest. | It is not the most precise name for the cave enemies in Sons of the Forest. |
| Mutants | The enemy category used by the cave information describing the respawn rule. | The word does not establish a single species or a fixed number per cave. |
| Creepies | A player-facing name used for the hostile mutant enemies found in caves. | It does not imply that every creepy uses an identical spawn pattern. |
| Puffies | The common cave enemy described for Sons of the Forest. | They should not be treated as the gray cave cannibals from The Forest. |
So, if a search such as “do the creepy mutants respawn in caves?” sounds more accurate than “do cannibals respawn,” that is because it matches the terminology used for the sequel. A player discussion uses that wording as well, but the discussion is an example of how players ask the question, not a separate source for the mechanic: Reddit discussion.

There is no evidence here for a cave-by-cave schedule that you can apply universally. The published wording refers to respawning “in the area” without mapping that area to every cave interior. It therefore does not establish all of the following:

- that every chamber repopulates;
- that every cave receives exactly two enemies;
- that the same enemy types return in the same locations;
- that returning after one calendar day always produces an immediately visible group; or
- that a cave can never contain more than the minimum mentioned in the rule.
The most useful interpretation is practical rather than absolute: killing cave enemies removes the group you are currently fighting, but the game can repopulate cave-related areas as days pass. The exact distribution depends on how the game defines the relevant area and on the spawning logic in the build you are playing.
Why patches make old cave-spawn advice unreliable
Spawn behavior has been adjusted over time. Patch 03 changed creepy spawning logic in caves to prevent enemies from visibly spawning and to stop caves from accumulating “over the top amounts of enemies” over time. That change is important because it shows that the developers were tuning both presentation and long-term population, not simply setting one permanent number for every cave.
Earlier patch notes also describe a Patch 01 fix for late-game caves opening with too many enemies, along with other spawn adjustments. Those notes support two cautions:

- A video, guide or forum answer made before a spawn adjustment may describe behavior that no longer appears in the same way.
- A patch that limits visible or excessive spawning does not prove that respawning was removed. It can change how enemies appear while leaving the underlying possibility of returning enemies intact.
Unless a patch note specifies a particular cave and a precise current count, do not convert a general adjustment into a rule such as “all caves now respawn two enemies” or “caves no longer respawn.” The available information supports neither claim.
How to check a cave in your own save
If you need to know whether a particular cave is safe for a later trip, you can perform a controlled observation. This will tell you what happens in your current save and build without pretending that one cave is a template for the whole island.
- Record the starting state. Note the cave entrance, the sections you can reach and the enemies you see before fighting. A quick written count is enough; screenshots can help if the layout is confusing.
- Clear the route you intend to use. Defeat the enemies in that route and note whether you cleared one chamber or several connected sections. Because the source uses the word “area,” the size of your cleared region matters.
- Leave the cave. Do not assume that standing in the same room will reveal the full respawn behavior. Exit far enough to make your later visit a genuine return rather than a continuous encounter.
- Advance the game by a day. Use the normal day-and-night cycle in your save. The published rule is phrased per day, but it does not specify a required sleeping action or an exact time of appearance.
- Return by the same route. Compare the cave section you recorded with its earlier state. Note whether enemies are present, whether they occupy the same places and whether the number is above or below what you expected.
- Repeat before drawing a conclusion. One empty return does not disprove respawning, and one group does not prove that every cave uses the same area boundary. Repeat the observation on more than one day or in more than one section if the answer affects an important expedition.
This procedure is an observation aid, not a guarantee that the game exposes a clean experiment. Patch changes, area boundaries and enemy-population controls can all affect what you see.

What the answer means for exploration and base planning
A cleared cave is not a permanently cleared cave
If you remove enemies from a cave, treat that as a temporary tactical advantage. The documented daily respawn behavior means that a route you used safely yesterday may require another fight later. Plan return trips with the assumption that enemies can be present again rather than relying on the first clear as permanent security.
Do not budget combat around an exact count
The minimum of two mutants is useful as a warning that respawns can occur, but it is not a complete encounter table. The wording does not provide a maximum, a room-by-room distribution or a guarantee that only two will be waiting. Carry the equipment and healing items appropriate for an uncertain encounter instead of preparing for exactly two targets.
Use your own route notes
Because “the area” is undefined, notes are more useful when they identify the entrance, branch and chamber you actually cleared. A later return can then distinguish a repopulated section from an enemy group that was never removed from a deeper branch.

Expect tuning rather than a frozen rule
Spawn logic has already been adjusted to reduce visible spawning and excessive accumulation. If a game update changes what you see, recheck the particular cave before treating an old route plan as dependable.
Common misconceptions and the safer interpretation
| Common claim | What the available information supports |
|---|---|
| “Every cave always respawns exactly two enemies.” | The cave description says at least two mutants can respawn in the area each day. It does not define a universal cave total. |
| “The cave is permanently safe after one clear.” | Cave enemies can return, so a clear should be treated as temporary. |
| “If I did not see an enemy appear, the cave cannot respawn.” | Patch 03 specifically addressed visible spawning. Not seeing an appearance animation is not proof that no later enemies can be present. |
| “The sequel has the same cave cannibals as the first game.” | Sons of the Forest uses mutants or creepies; Puffies replace the gray cave cannibals associated with The Forest. |
| “An old guide’s cave count is the current rule.” | Patch 01 and Patch 03 both document spawn-related changes, so older counts may not describe the current behavior. |
| “A late-game cave opening with many enemies proves there is no respawn limit.” | Patch 01 notes a fix for late-game caves opening with too many enemies. That is evidence of a corrected spawn problem, not a complete formula for all caves. |
How to answer the question for either game
If you are discussing The Forest, “cave cannibals” is an appropriate reference to the gray cave enemies associated with that game. If you are discussing Sons of the Forest, say mutants, creepies or Puffies when you mean the common cave inhabitants. Mixing the names can make a correct observation sound as though it applies to the wrong title.
For the sequel, the answer remains conditional in the right way: yes, cave enemies can respawn, and the cave information describes at least two mutants returning in the area each day. The exact area boundary, cave-by-cave behavior and current presentation after later updates are not specified by that statement.
Bottom line
Cave enemies do respawn in Sons of the Forest. The documented rule says that at least two mutants naturally respawn in the area each day after enemies are killed. “Cannibals” is an informal carry-over from The Forest; the sequel’s cave enemies are mutants or creepies, with Puffies identified as the common cave enemy. Because the source does not define “the area” and patches have changed cave spawning, use the rule as a warning that caves can repopulate—not as a promise of an identical two-enemy reset in every cave and every version.
