Do Console Graphics Modes Actually Change Image Quality and Frame Rate?

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Yes. Quality (also called fidelity or resolution) and performance modes change the workload a console gives the game’s renderer. A quality mode usually spends more of that budget on internal resolution, ray-traced lighting, shadows, reflections and other effects, commonly targeting 30 frames per second (FPS). A performance mode removes or reduces some of those costs to target 60 FPS or higher, improving motion clarity and control response.

The trade-off is not identical in every game. Developers choose the targets, dynamic-resolution limits, image-reconstruction method and visual features for each title. The 4K number shown by a television can therefore differ from the resolution being rendered internally at any moment.

What a graphics mode changes

A mode is a bundle of rendering targets, not a cosmetic switch. The game can alter several variables at once:

  • Frame-rate target: How often the game attempts to produce a new frame. At 30 FPS, each frame has about 33.3 milliseconds to render; at 60 FPS, about 16.7 milliseconds; at 120 FPS, about 8.3 milliseconds.
  • Internal resolution: The pixel count used while the scene is rendered. More pixels require more GPU work.
  • Ray tracing: Real-time calculations for reflections, shadows or global illumination that can consume substantial rendering time.
  • Effects quality: Shadow resolution, foliage density, texture filtering, volumetric lighting, reflections, particle counts and draw distance can all be adjusted.
  • Reconstruction and scaling: A lower internal image may be reconstructed or upscaled to the television’s output resolution.

Because these settings interact, a performance mode is not simply “the same picture at twice the speed,” and a quality mode is not always a permanently native-resolution image.

Why higher FPS feels different

At 60 FPS, camera movement and animation receive twice as many updates as at 30 FPS. That usually makes panning easier to follow and reduces the delay between an input and the next visible response. The benefit is most obvious in aiming, driving, fighting and other camera-heavy activities.

A 30-FPS mode can still look more detailed in a static view. If it uses a higher internal resolution, sharper shadows or ray-traced reflections, a paused screenshot may show richer fine detail than the 60-FPS alternative. During movement, however, the additional updates of a steady 60-FPS mode can make the image appear clearer even when its individual frames contain fewer pixels.

Axis Quality/fidelity mode Performance mode
Motion and control Usually targets 30 FPS, so motion steps and input updates are less frequent. Usually targets 60 FPS or more, giving smoother movement and faster-feeling responses.
Still-image detail More rendering time for resolution, ray tracing, shadows, reflections and effects. Some resolution or effects are reduced to free GPU time for additional frames.
Resolution behavior May use a higher internal target, but can still lower resolution in demanding scenes. Often uses a lower or more variable internal target, then reconstructs or upscales the output.
Best fit Slow exploration, cinematic presentation and players who prioritize lighting and detail. Action, competitive play, driving, shooters and anyone sensitive to camera smoothness.

The table describes common design patterns, not a console-wide rule. A developer can choose different settings, add a balanced option or change behavior in a patch.

Dynamic resolution means “4K output” is not always native 4K rendering

Many console games use dynamic resolution. The renderer raises or lowers its internal pixel count to stay near the selected frame-rate target. A quiet room with few characters may allow a higher internal resolution; a large battle, storm or effects-heavy scene may force it lower.

The console still sends a fixed output format, such as 3840×2160, to the display. Reconstruction or upscaling fills that output from the internally rendered image. Consequently, a television’s information panel can report 4K while the game is rendering below native 4K at that instant.

Halo Support describes the opposite adjustment in less demanding situations: when system demand drops, resolution can scale back up to improve image quality. This approach keeps performance steadier than locking every scene to one pixel count. It also explains why two screenshots from the same mode can differ in fine detail.

Game or platform Documented mode or capability What it demonstrates
Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X Rockstar Games (2022) says Fidelity Mode targets 30 FPS with native 4K and ray tracing. Performance Mode targets 60 FPS with upscaled 4K. Performance RT combines upscaled 4K, ray tracing and a 60-FPS target. One game can offer three distinct compromises instead of a simple quality/performance split.
The Elder Scrolls Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X Bethesda Softworks (2021) documents Performance mode at 60 FPS and 1440p, and Fidelity mode at 4K and 30 FPS. The performance option can use a substantially lower resolution to meet its frame-rate target.
Xbox Series X|S platform guidance Microsoft states that the consoles support frame rates up to 120 FPS when a game and display support them. Series X is designed as a native-4K console; Series S is designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a compatible display. Console capability is a ceiling, not a promise that every game or mode reaches it.

These figures are documented targets for the named games and platforms. They should not be treated as universal presets for every PlayStation 5 or Xbox title.

Do PS5 and Xbox have a universal graphics preset?

No. The game developer defines the available modes and their behavior. One title may offer only 30-FPS fidelity and 60-FPS performance; another may add ray-traced performance, a 40-FPS balanced mode or separate resolution and frame-rate toggles. Console model, patch version and display support can also affect the options shown.

PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 games commonly expose their mode choice in the game’s own graphics or display menu. The system’s video settings determine which signals the console can send, but they do not turn a 30-FPS game mode into 60 FPS. A patch can add, remove or retune a mode, so check the game’s current notes when behavior changes.

Xbox Series X and Series S

Series X and Series S share platform features but do not have identical rendering targets. Series X has a higher-performance GPU and is positioned for native 4K output; Series S is designed around 1440p with 4K upscaling. A title can therefore offer different resolutions or omit a mode on Series S even when the Series X version includes it.

Does a 120 Hz television make console graphics look better?

A 120 Hz panel does not automatically increase a game’s resolution or frame rate. It lets the display accept high-refresh signals when the console, game, HDMI input and cable all support them. If a game is capped at 30 or 60 FPS, the panel cannot create the missing game frames without display-side processing, and that processing is not the same as a native 120-FPS mode.

For supported content, the requirements are:

  • A television or monitor with a 120 Hz input mode.
  • A console game that offers a 120-FPS or other high-refresh output option.
  • An HDMI input on the display rated for the required bandwidth.
  • An appropriate HDMI cable. Sony recommends the PlayStation 5’s included Ultra High-Speed Cable or another cable rated for 4K 120 Hz. If you are shopping by specification, the phrase “Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K 120 Hz” describes the relevant certification class.
  • Compatible console video-output settings. Sony states that PS5 can output 4K at 120 Hz when the display, HDMI connection and settings are compatible.

Microsoft likewise notes that 4K at up to 120 FPS on Xbox requires supported content and a compatible display. A 120 Hz screen is therefore an enabling condition, not a visual upgrade applied to every game.

How to choose the right mode

Choose performance when motion and response matter most

  • You play competitive shooters, racing games, fighting games or fast action.
  • You notice judder or input delay more than small changes in shadows and reflections.
  • Your display supports 60 Hz or higher and the game can hold its performance target.
  • You sit close enough to the screen that motion smoothness is more noticeable than extra static detail.

Choose quality or fidelity when image detail is your priority

  • You prefer cinematic lighting, ray-traced reflections or denser effects.
  • You spend time exploring, photographing scenes or playing slowly paced games.
  • You use a large 4K display and are comfortable with a 30-FPS target.
  • The performance mode’s resolution reduction is more distracting to you than its smoother camera movement is helpful.

Consider a balanced or 40-FPS option when available

Some games provide an intermediate mode. A 40-FPS target has a 25-millisecond frame interval, which is smoother than 30 FPS while preserving more visual features than a typical 60-FPS mode. It requires a display that can refresh at a compatible multiple, commonly 120 Hz, and it is not available in every title.

How to verify what a mode is really doing

  1. Open the game’s graphics menu. Look for labels such as Fidelity, Quality, Resolution, Performance, Performance RT or Balanced. Read the accompanying description instead of relying on the label alone.
  2. Check the target frame rate and resolution. A statement such as “60 FPS target” is not a guarantee that every scene remains at 60 FPS, and “4K” may refer to output or reconstructed resolution.
  3. Confirm your display mode. On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and verify the detected resolution and 120-Hz capability. On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options and review the 4K and refresh-rate details.
  4. Test the same camera movement. Pan across foliage, rotate around a character and move through a busy area. Compare smoothness and detail separately rather than judging from a paused menu.
  5. Retest after patches. Developers can alter dynamic-resolution ranges, frame-rate caps or ray-tracing features without changing the console hardware.

Troubleshooting a mode that does not appear or does not reach its target

  • 120-FPS option missing: Check that the display input, cable and console setting support 120 Hz, then confirm that the game actually includes a 120-FPS mode. A 120-Hz panel alone is insufficient.
  • Image looks soft in performance mode: This may be the intended lower internal resolution or reconstruction behavior. Compare the same scene in fidelity mode; do not infer internal resolution solely from the display’s 4K label.
  • Frame rate dips: A target is an aim, not an absolute lock. Heavy effects, large crowds and complex lighting can trigger dynamic-resolution scaling or temporary drops.
  • Quality mode looks less clear while moving: The higher-detail frames arrive less often at 30 FPS. Judge static detail and motion clarity as separate characteristics.
  • Different console models show different options: Series X and Series S have different performance envelopes, and developers may tune or omit modes accordingly.

Common misconceptions

“Performance mode is lower quality in every way.”

It usually reduces some visual settings, but higher frame rate can improve perceived clarity during movement and make controls feel more immediate. Whether that is a lower overall experience depends on whether you value motion response or static fidelity more.

“Quality mode always runs at native 4K.”

Not necessarily. Dynamic resolution can lower internal rendering resolution even in a fidelity mode. The output may still be reconstructed or upscaled to 4K.

“A 4K/120 Hz television guarantees 4K at 120 FPS.”

The console, game, display input and HDMI cable must all support that signal. Microsoft and Sony both describe 4K/120 output as conditional on compatible content and equipment.

“Every PS5 or Xbox game uses the same mode definitions.”

Mode behavior is selected by each developer. The documented differences between Grand Theft Auto V and The Elder Scrolls Online illustrate why the in-game description matters more than the console brand.

Bottom line

Graphics modes change real rendering priorities. Fidelity favors resolution, ray tracing and effects, commonly around 30 FPS; performance reallocates that budget toward smoother, more responsive 60-FPS-or-higher play. Dynamic resolution means neither label guarantees one fixed internal pixel count. Choose the mode that matches your priority, then verify that your display, HDMI connection and console settings can deliver the refresh rate the game supports.
