Do D&D Cantrips Scale With Your Total Character Level?

Yes. In both the 2024 D&D rules and the 2014 rules as clarified by official errata, a cantrip that has a higher-level increase uses your total character level, not the level of the class that granted the spell. Add all of your class levels, then apply the thresholds and effects written in that cantrip’s description. Levels from other classes count, and the cantrip’s scaling is not an effect of spending a higher-level spell slot.

The rule in plain language

A scaling cantrip follows your character, not one particular class. If you are multiclassed, combine your levels in every class to determine your character level. A wizard 3/fighter 2, for example, is a 5th-level character for a wizard cantrip that improves at higher levels. The fighter levels do not disappear simply because the fighter class did not teach the spell.

The 2024 Basic Rules state: “If a cantrip of yours increases in power at higher levels, the increase is based on your total character level, not your level in a particular class, unless the spell says otherwise.” This sentence answers both parts of the usual question: use the total, and check the individual spell for an exception.

The 2014 Player’s Handbook received an official errata addition with nearly the same instruction: “If a cantrip of yours increases in power at higher levels, the increase is based on your character level, not your level in a particular class.” The wording is slightly shorter, but the practical result is the same for ordinary play.

How to calculate the level a cantrip uses

  1. Write down every class level. Include levels in classes that did not grant the cantrip.
  2. Add those levels together. The sum is your total character level for this purpose.
  3. Read the cantrip’s own description. Look for language describing an increase at higher levels and note the exact thresholds and effect.
  4. Apply the effect for your total level. Do not substitute the level of the class on your character sheet next to the spell.

In formula form: cantrip scaling level = the sum of all your class levels, unless the spell explicitly uses a different rule. Your spellcasting ability, proficiency bonus, attack roll, and saving-throw DC are separate calculations. They do not change the definition of character level used by a cantrip’s higher-level entry.

Character level is also different from your class’s spellcasting level for multiclass spell-slot calculations. A multiclass table might combine levels to determine slots, or use a special calculation for a particular class, but that does not replace the direct character-level instruction for cantrips.

Multiclass examples

Wizard and fighter

A character has three wizard levels and two fighter levels. The character learned a cantrip as a wizard. Their total character level is 5, so the cantrip is checked against the higher-level threshold that applies at character level 5, if its description has one. Treating the spell as a 3rd-level cantrip because only three levels came from wizard would be incorrect.

Warlock and cleric

A character has five warlock levels and seven cleric levels. A cantrip learned from warlock uses character level 12. The seven cleric levels count even though cleric did not provide that spell. The same total applies to a cantrip learned from cleric, subject to that spell’s own wording.

Taking a cantrip after multiclassing

Suppose a character starts as a fighter, later takes wizard levels, and learns a cantrip only after reaching a higher total level. The spell does not begin at a lower progression because the character lacked wizard levels earlier. On the day the cantrip is learned, compare the character’s total level with the spell’s listed thresholds.

A cantrip from a source other than a class

The rule is written for a “cantrip of yours,” rather than only for a class spell. If a character gains a cantrip through another character option, use the same total-character-level method unless that feature or the cantrip itself gives a specific exception. The feature that grants the spell can determine which ability you use, but it does not automatically turn the spell into a class-level progression.

Not every cantrip scales

The character-level rule is conditional. It applies when the cantrip’s description says that it increases in power at higher levels. It does not give every cantrip an automatic damage increase, extra targets, longer duration, or any other improvement.

Read the spell entry rather than relying on a general assumption about the category. One cantrip might increase damage, another might change the number of targets, and another might have no higher-level entry at all. The thresholds are not a universal schedule that you can transfer from one spell to another. When a cantrip lists multiple breakpoints, use exactly those breakpoints and the effect attached to each one.

The 2024 rule also preserves an explicit exception: a spell can say otherwise. If the cantrip specifies a different level, progression, or qualifying statistic, that spell-specific text controls. A general character-level rule cannot override a direct instruction printed in the spell description.

Cantrip scaling is not upcasting

Under the 2024 rules, a cantrip is cast without a spell slot. Its higher-level improvement therefore is not an upcast effect and does not consume a slot. You choose the cantrip, resolve its normal casting time and components, and then use the effect appropriate to your character level.

This distinction matters when comparing a cantrip with a leveled spell. A leveled spell may offer additional effects when you spend a slot of a higher level, if its text allows that. A cantrip’s built-in progression happens because your character has reached the listed level; there is no slot level to choose and no slot to expend. A character cannot make a cantrip stronger by declaring that it is being cast with a 1st-level, 2nd-level, or higher-level slot.

Conversely, the absence of a slot does not mean a cantrip ignores the rest of the spell’s rules. You still use its range, components, duration, attack or saving-throw instructions, and any concentration requirement stated in the description. Only the level used to select the higher-level entry is established by the character-level rule.

2024 rules compared with the 2014 errata

Rules context Relevant wording Practical result
2024 Basic Rules “Total character level, not your level in a particular class, unless the spell says otherwise.” Add all class levels and then check the cantrip’s thresholds; honor a spell-specific exception.
2014 Player’s Handbook errata “Character level, not your level in a particular class.” Add all class levels for a scaling cantrip. The errata paragraph was added under Spells Known and Prepared on page 164.

The two versions support the same answer for a normal multiclass character. The 2024 text makes the exception clause explicit, while the 2014 wording appears in the official errata rather than the original printed paragraph. If your table uses the 2024 Player’s Handbook, use its rules in place of the 2014 version. If your table remains on the 2014 rules, use the errata’s character-level clarification.

When a campaign mixes books, decide which rules edition governs before resolving disputes. A character sheet may contain options from different publication eras, but the table should still have one stated rules baseline. The edition choice does not turn a class-level calculation into a character-level one or vice versa; it tells you which text to apply when wording differs.

A reliable table procedure

At character creation

Record the source of each cantrip, but do not use that source as the scaling level. Put your total character level in a visible place on the sheet. If you multiclass later, update that total immediately so the next spell attack, damage roll, or other cantrip effect uses the current threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When preparing or learning a spell

  1. Open the complete cantrip entry, not just a short name in a spell list.
  2. Find the paragraph or table that describes higher-level increases.
  3. Copy the listed thresholds and effects into your notes if the spell is used frequently.
  4. Compare the highest threshold you have reached with your total character level.

When casting during play

First resolve the spell normally: select a target, make the required attack roll or have targets make the required saving throw, and apply the spell’s base effect. Then use the higher-level line that matches your character level. If the cantrip has no higher-level line, there is no character-level scaling to apply.

When a rules question comes up

Show the cantrip’s exact text and your class-level breakdown. The fastest ruling is usually mechanical: add the levels, identify the cantrip’s threshold, and check whether the spell includes an exception. This avoids arguments based on which class feels more closely associated with the spell.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake Why it fails Correction
Using only the class that granted the cantrip The rule expressly distinguishes total character level from a particular class level. Add every class level before checking the spell.
Using the multiclass spellcaster level Spell-slot calculations and cantrip scaling answer different questions. Use total character level for the cantrip, even when slots use another formula.
Assuming every cantrip improves Only cantrips with a higher-level instruction scale. Read the selected spell’s full description.
Applying one spell’s thresholds to another Each cantrip controls its own progression and effects. Use the thresholds printed in that cantrip.
Treating the increase as an upcast Cantrips are cast without spell slots under the 2024 rules. Do not spend or choose a slot level; use the character-level entry.
Ignoring the exception clause The 2024 rule allows a cantrip to specify a different method. Give the spell’s direct wording priority.
Mixing 2014 and 2024 text without choosing a baseline The books are different rules contexts, even though this point is substantially the same. State whether the table is using 2014 with errata or the 2024 rules.

What counts as the relevant level?

For the ordinary rule, the relevant number is your current total character level: the combined levels of your classes. It is not your level in the class named beside the spell, your level in the class with the highest spellcasting ability, or the level at which you first learned the cantrip.

Do not substitute your proficiency bonus, spellcasting ability modifier, or spell-save DC. Those values may influence whether a cantrip attack hits or whether a target succeeds on a save, but they are not the level thresholds used for the cantrip’s higher-level entry.

Likewise, a temporary bonus that changes an attack roll or damage roll does not create a new cantrip scaling tier unless a rule specifically says that it changes your character level. The spell’s level-based progression is tied to the character-level number, not to the size of an individual bonus.

Practical checklist for players and Dungeon Masters

  • Identify the rules edition used by the campaign.
  • Confirm that the cantrip actually has a higher-level increase.
  • Add all levels in all of the character’s classes.
  • Read the cantrip’s listed thresholds and effects word for word.
  • Check for a spell-specific exception, especially under the 2024 wording.
  • Do not spend a spell slot to obtain the cantrip’s normal level-based increase.
  • Update the calculation whenever the character gains a level or changes the cantrip.
  • Keep the spell’s other rules—range, components, duration, attack or save, and concentration—separate from its scaling rule.

The short ruling for a table dispute

If a cantrip says it becomes more powerful at higher levels, count the character’s levels across all classes and apply the cantrip’s own progression. A level in a class that did not grant the spell still counts. A cantrip that does not list a higher-level increase does not gain one merely because the character leveled up. Under the 2024 rules, verify whether the spell says otherwise; under the 2014 rules, use the official errata clarification.
