No. A PS5 disc does not let a game run without using console storage: disc games install game data to the console, while digital games download it. The disc must also stay inserted to play that physical copy.
Do PS5 disc games still install?
Yes. PlayStation Support says, “The game installs automatically the first time you play it.” The disc supplies the physical copy and is required to play it, but it does not replace the installed game data. Some larger games use separate data and play discs; installation still completes on the console. See PlayStation Support’s disc-install instructions.

How do disc and digital games compare for storage?

Both formats use console storage for game data; a physical disc is not a way to avoid an installation. Sony’s guidance does not establish that every disc and digital edition has exactly the same installed size, so don’t assume byte-for-byte equality across titles, updates, or optional content. Sony describes the disc and all-digital PS5 editions on its PS5 product page.
How to check a particular game’s installed size
There is no single reliable size to apply to every game. Updates, selected content, and a game’s own installation options can affect the space it uses. Check the current Games and Apps storage listing on your PS5 for the title you have installed; official guidance does not provide a universal disc-versus-digital size comparison for each game.

What to do if your PS5 is low on storage
Add compatible M.2 SSD storage
Sony supports commercially available M.2 SSDs that meet its requirements. A compatible M.2 SSD can store PS5 game data, but verify the requirements for your console model before choosing a drive. See Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guide and storage guidance.
Use USB extended storage to keep games between sessions
PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage, but they cannot be played from it. Move a PS5 game back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage before launching it. USB extended storage is therefore useful for keeping games you are not currently playing, not for bypassing the console’s installed-storage requirement.
