In January 2026, New Blood Interactive CEO Dave Oshry said Blood West sold “like 200% more” on Steam on a day it was free on the Epic Games Store. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney called that kind of cross-store awareness “a feature” of the giveaways. The reported figure has no published sales data or methodology behind it, so it should be treated as an anecdote, not a reliable estimate of what other games can expect.
What happened with Blood West?
On January 21, 2026, reporting by PCGamesN attributed the figure to Oshry: Blood West sold “like 200% more” on Steam on a day it was being given away on Epic. Oshry described the giveaway as advertising for Steam sales. PCGamesN’s report does not provide the underlying Steam sales data, a baseline for comparison, a measurement method, or independent confirmation.
That makes the statement useful as a concrete publisher anecdote, but not as a verified measurement. It does not establish how many additional copies were sold, whether the same pattern occurred on other days, or whether the Epic promotion caused the reported change.
What does Sweeney mean by calling it a feature?
Sweeney’s argument is that a free week on Epic can put a game in front of people who later buy it on another platform. He said, “Being free for a week on Epic raises awareness everywhere,” and that games also available on consoles, Steam, iOS, or Android “see an uplift when it’s free on Epic,” according to PCGamesN.

- Blaze your deadly trail across a lawless land, through eerie ghost towns and scorched deserts.
- From pistols to gatlings, use the gun slinging skills of Ray and Thomas to cut down your foes.
- Rob banks, blow up bridges and relive the worst of the west in legends multiplayer mode.
He framed that spillover as part of the program rather than a flaw: Epic’s promotion can raise a game’s profile beyond Epic’s own store. In comments reported by PCGamesN and PC Guide, Sweeney described competition between Epic and Steam as giving players and developers more options and better deals, saying “gamers and developers win.” That is Sweeney’s view of the competitive benefits, not an independently measured verdict about the outcome for every player, developer, or storefront.
Is there evidence that Epic giveaways generally raise Steam sales?
The cited reporting does not establish an average causal effect across games. The roughly 200% figure is Oshry’s claim about one game on one reported day; it should not be applied to other titles as a predicted uplift.

- EXPANDED BATTLES: Enhance your Blood Rage experience with the 5th Player Expansion, introducing the formidable Ram clan and allowing for epic 5-player battles in the world of Norse mythology.
- SEAMLESS INTEGRATION: The game board is designed to seamlessly support 5-player gameplay, with no provinces destroyed by Ragnarök before the game begins.
- GODS' GIFTS CARDS: This expansion includes 24 "Gods' Gifts" cards (8 for each Age deck) with the "5+" players pre-requisite, adding depth and variety to your strategies.
- MIX OF CLASSICS AND NEW: While most cards are extra copies of those from the base game, discover new cards like the challenging "Widespread!" Quest, where you must dominate any 2 provinces.
- EXPAND YOUR RAGNARÖK: With the 5th Player Expansion, invite more warriors to join the fray, adding complexity and excitement to your battles for glory.
Sweeney made a similar awareness argument in 2020. In a GameSpot interview, he said developers had observed increased sales on Steam and consoles after Epic giveaways. Game Developer’s coverage noted that the account did not include specific figures for the size of those increases or how many developers saw them. The older comments therefore support the existence of Sweeney’s claim, not a representative estimate of its scale.
To demonstrate a general causal effect, evidence would need to compare sales against a credible counterfactual—what those same games would have sold without the giveaway—and account for other factors such as timing, discounts, updates, and publicity. The cited reports do not provide that kind of analysis.

How should players and developers interpret the claim?
- For players: A giveaway can increase a game’s visibility, and Sweeney says that awareness can extend to other stores. The reporting does not show that every giveaway leads to more Steam purchases.
- For developers: Oshry’s account suggests a possible promotional benefit for Blood West, but it does not quantify a dependable return or show how another game would perform.
- For storefronts: Sweeney presents cross-store exposure and competition as beneficial. The available example does not independently measure the effect on Epic’s or Steam’s overall sales.
How is this different from the debate over exclusivity?
A free game promotion and an exclusive release are different strategies. The Blood West anecdote concerns a game being free on Epic while also available for purchase on Steam; it is not evidence about the effects of restricting a game to one storefront.
That distinction matters because the broader debate includes different views of what helps developers. In a separate discussion of exclusivity, Larian Studios publishing director Michael Douse argued: “Giving everyone everything for free might bump numbers but doesn’t create a viable storefront from which to sell premium experiences,” as reported by PC Gamer. That is a counterpoint about storefront sustainability, not a direct rebuttal of Oshry’s reported Steam sales for Blood West.
