To learn a recipe in Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, eat the corresponding dish; it is then recorded in the Recipe Book, where you can cook it later with ingredients. Food comes from shops and inns, but also from chests, NPCs, requests, and a book you must read at the right point in one quest. The chapter-by-chapter guide below names the locations and acquisition methods reported by the guides cited here; where a guide’s “first location” may not be the earliest possible source, that distinction is noted.
How recipe collection works
The official Recipe Book/Notebook page explains that meals Estelle and the party eat are automatically logged, and ingredients in the inventory can then be used to cook them. The first time you cook a dish can also provide a party benefit. In practice, eat dishes you find or buy rather than assuming that merely seeing or purchasing one records it.

GameFAQs’ remake recipe index lists 28 standard recipes, 30 specialty recipes, and 10 customized dishes. Those are the guide’s category totals, not an independently verified developer count. Its location column is labeled “Location & First Time Success”; use it as a route reference, not proof that a named vendor is the only way to get a dish.
Prologue and early Liberl
Rolent
- Abend Bar: Wholesome Pasta, Fried Potatoes, Flowery Soda, and Carmine’s Eye.
- Rinon’s General Goods: Maple Cookie.
- Shiny Stone Search request: Drill Meatball is tied to this request.
- Jade Tower: Dreamy Shell Bake is in a chest.
Gurune Gate
Cafeteria: Salad Sandwich is reported as available during the prologue by a guide-page commenter, and the guide’s author acknowledged overlooking that timing. The guide’s chapter list otherwise places it in Chapter 1 based on where the author found it. If you are collecting as early as possible, check the cafeteria during the prologue rather than relying on the later chapter classification.

Customized dishes are cooking results, not pickups
The remake’s recipe index separates 10 customized dishes from standard and specialty recipes. These are produced by cooking an existing dish, not found as separate items at a location. The guide notes that only the designated inventor character can cook each customized recipe. Examples include Energy Smoothie from Carmine’s Eye, Apple Compote from Apple Ice Cream, and Cheesy Chicken Burger from Blazing Fried Chicken.

- At each new town, check its food shops, bars, inns, and cafeterias and eat dishes you obtain so their recipes are logged. Raider King’s route guide advises buying food as you visit because it says earlier towns cannot be revisited.
- Check chests and speak with named NPCs; several entries above are not shop purchases.
- Track request rewards and read quest-related books before advancing the relevant request. In particular, read Tomorrow’s Cooking during Looking for Librarian before completing it.
- Use the remake-specific index when checking an individual dish. Older guides may describe the original game rather than this remake, while chapter labels and spellings can vary between remake guides.
The location list above follows Raider King’s chapter-ordered route and the GameFAQs remake index. Their locations indicate reported or first acquisition points, not an exhaustive list of every possible seller. Salad Sandwich is a concrete example of why “first listed” and “earliest available” can differ.
