Yes—some gamers use mini keyboards, especially 60% and 65% layouts. Their main attraction is width: removing the number pad and, on smaller models, the function row, arrow keys and navigation cluster leaves more room for a mouse. That can be valuable on a narrow desk or for players who use broad mouse movements. It does not prove that a compact keyboard improves aim or raises performance, and there is no reliable statistic showing what share of gamers use one.

Whether a mini keyboard suits you depends on the keys you actually use. A 60% board can feel ideal for a key-light first-person shooter setup and frustrating for someone who relies on function keys, arrows, navigation commands or many MMO binds. The word “mini” also covers several layouts, so compare the physical arrangement rather than trusting the percentage printed on a product page.

What “mini keyboard” means

“Mini” is an informal category, not one universal specification. Most gaming discussions use it for 60% and 65% boards. Tenkeyless (TKL) keyboards are also compact compared with full-size models, although they retain substantially more dedicated keys. Percentages describe the approximate footprint of a traditional full-size layout; they are not guarantees of an exact key count or identical arrangement.

Layout Typical dedicated keys What is removed or retained Best fit
60% About 61 keys on a typical design No dedicated function row, arrow cluster, navigation cluster or number pad. Missing functions are usually reached through an Fn layer or remapped shortcuts. Players who want the smallest mainstream footprint and do not mind layers.
65% Varies by model Usually restores dedicated arrow keys while keeping a compact body. Function and navigation keys may still require layers. Players who want a small board but use arrows regularly.
TKL (80%) Close to a full-size board minus the number pad Keeps the function row, arrow keys and most navigation keys; removes only the number pad. Players who want conventional access to common keys and extra mouse room.
96% or full-size Most or all dedicated keys Keeps a number pad and broad key coverage, with 96% models compressing gaps to save some width. MMO players, spreadsheet users and anyone with many dedicated binds.

RTINGS describes a typical 60% keyboard as having approximately 61 keys, while layout guides from Corsair and Fnatic emphasize that arrangements vary by model. Inspect the actual diagram before buying; two boards with the same percentage can place modifiers, Delete, right Shift or navigation functions differently. RTINGS’ keyboard-size guide, Corsair’s layout guide and Fnatic’s size comparison show the practical differences.

Why gamers choose a mini board

More room for the mouse

A narrower keyboard lets you position the mouse farther left or keep a larger uninterrupted sweep area. That is particularly useful for low-sensitivity FPS players who move the mouse across a wide part of the desk. Corsair and RTINGS identify this space-saving advantage for competitive shooters. It is a desk-geometry benefit, not evidence that the keyboard itself makes a player aim better. Your sensitivity, posture, surface and practice still determine how much the extra room helps.

Easier positioning

Compact dimensions make it simpler to center a keyboard in front of your body, angle it for a particular game, or move it aside between matches. A 60% board can also fit on a shallow tray or a crowded laptop-style desk where a full-size model would force the mouse into an awkward position. The portability claim is strongest as a practical consequence of lower width and weight; manufacturer descriptions should not be read as independent performance testing.

A minimal setup

Some players never touch a number pad, function row or navigation cluster while gaming. Removing unused hardware reduces visual clutter and leaves a smaller footprint for a microphone, controller, notebook or other desk equipment. The benefit is personal: a minimalist layout is useful only if the keys removed are not part of your regular games or work.

The trade-offs of going smaller

Missing keys become layers

On a 60% keyboard, arrows, F1–F12, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, Insert and Delete are commonly accessed by holding an Fn key and pressing another key. The exact combinations differ between models and firmware. A shortcut that is easy to remember in a menu can be awkward during a fast game, and an unfamiliar layer can make troubleshooting harder. Before purchase, download or view the keyboard’s layout sheet and confirm every key you use.

More planning for keybind-heavy games

Games with many abilities, macros or inventory commands may benefit from dedicated keys. Corsair specifically points readers toward full-size, 99% or 96% layouts for MMO-style workloads. That is practical guidance rather than a rule about genres: a player who remaps aggressively may be comfortable on 60%, while a shooter player who uses numerous utility binds may prefer TKL. Count your real inputs instead of assuming a game category decides the answer.

Work and navigation can expose the compromise

Arrow keys and function keys matter outside games too. Editing text, navigating code, controlling media, using spreadsheet shortcuts or switching virtual desktops can require repeated layer combinations. If the keyboard will serve as your everyday work board, include those tasks in your decision rather than evaluating it only from a match-ready desk.

60%, 65% or TKL: which compact size fits?

Choose 60% for maximum mouse space

A 60% board is the clearest answer when width is your primary constraint and you are willing to learn layers. It suits a setup where movement keys, a few nearby binds and mouse control dominate. It is less convenient when you frequently press arrows, the function row or navigation keys directly. Some gaming models provide alternate behavior to reduce that friction; for example, the product page for the Razer Huntsman V3 Pro Mini 8KHz says its bottom-right modifier keys act as arrow keys when tapped. Treat that as a feature of that model, not a universal 60% standard. See the manufacturer’s layout description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose 65% for dedicated arrows

65% is a useful middle ground when you want a compact case but use arrow keys for menus, camera control, editing or navigation. You still give up a conventional function row and much of the navigation cluster, so verify where Delete and other keys live. For many players, retaining arrows removes the most noticeable daily annoyance without returning to TKL width.

All 87 keys support N-key rollover for reliable performance when pressing multiple keys at once.

Choose TKL for familiar access

TKL removes the number pad while retaining the function row, arrows and most navigation keys. It is the safer choice when you want extra mouse space but do not want to manage layers during a game or work session. It also leaves room for many keybinds without the width of a full-size board.

Choose 96% or full-size for maximum coverage

If you use a number pad, frequent function-row shortcuts, many MMO abilities or extensive spreadsheet commands, keeping more dedicated keys can outweigh the extra width. A 96% layout compresses the gaps between full-size sections, while a traditional full-size board preserves the familiar spacing. Neither is “less gaming” than a 60%; it simply prioritizes access over minimum footprint.

Match the layout to your games and routine

First-person shooters and battle royale games

Start by measuring the space needed for your mouse sweep. If a full-size keyboard forces the mouse close to the desk edge or makes you rotate your shoulders, 60%, 65% or TKL can solve a physical placement problem. Choose 60% only after confirming that your grenade, equipment, scoreboard and communication binds can be reached comfortably through the board’s normal keys or a layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MMOs, strategy games and simulation titles

List every action you use during a typical encounter, including modifier combinations, macros and camera controls. If the list occupies much of the function row, number row and navigation cluster, a TKL, 96% or full-size board may reduce cognitive and hand movement overhead. A compact board can still work with careful remapping, but the setup cost is higher and the result depends on your habits.

Players who switch genres

Consider the most demanding game and your non-gaming tasks, not the game you played last night. A 65% or TKL layout often limits regret for a mixed library because it retains more direct keys while still shrinking the board. If you rarely use arrows or function keys anywhere, the extra keys on a larger model may provide no practical value.

How to decide before buying

  1. Measure the desk. Mark the keyboard’s stated width and the mouse area you need at your normal sensitivity. Include space for a cable, wrist rest and monitor stand.
  2. Inventory your binds. Write down every key used in your three most-played games, including F-keys, arrows, Delete, Home, End and macros. Mark which inputs must be one-handed during action.
  3. Test layer tolerance. If possible, use a keyboard tester or temporary remapping to simulate Fn combinations. Check whether holding a modifier changes your ability to press movement and ability keys together.
  4. Inspect the exact layout. Confirm right Shift length, bottom-row modifiers, arrow placement, dedicated Delete and the locations of function-layer symbols. Percentage labels do not guarantee those details.
  5. Check software and firmware. Verify that the board supports the operating system, remapping software and onboard profiles you intend to use. A layer that requires a background utility may behave differently on another computer.
  6. Plan for portability and positioning. If you move the board between rooms or events, compare its dimensions, detachable cable and case protection. Portability is a convenience, not a measurable gaming advantage.
  7. Compare current models without assuming price. A 60% gaming keyboard search will return many different switch types, layouts and features. Product availability, retailer inventory and prices change; the cited sources establish examples and layout characteristics, not a universal cost.

Current compact examples discussed in gaming coverage include the Razer Huntsman V3 Pro Mini 8KHz and Wooting 60HE v2. A roundup from PC Gamer also covers 60%, 65%, TKL and Hall-effect options, but a product’s inclusion does not make its layout suitable for your binds. Use the roundup as a starting point for comparing form factors, then verify each manufacturer’s actual key map.

Make a 60% keyboard easier to use

Learn the primary layer first

Memorize only the combinations you need immediately: arrows, Escape, function keys used by your games, and navigation commands used in work. Keep the keyboard’s diagram nearby until the movements become automatic. Do not assume a shortcut from one brand carries over to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remap around your hands

Put high-frequency commands on keys that are comfortable to reach while holding the layer modifier. Preserve a reliable emergency key for menus or communication, and test simultaneous presses in the game rather than in a text editor. If a remap conflicts with a game’s default shortcut, change one side deliberately and document it.

Logitech G PRO Mechanical TKL Tenkeyless Gaming Keyboard (Clicky) - Black
  • Built with and for esports athletes for competition-level performance, speed and precision.
  • Durable GX Blue Click switches deliver an audible and tactile click for a solid, secure keypress.
  • Ultra-portable compact ten keyless design frees up table space for mouse movement. It’s easy to pack up and transport to tournaments.

  • Detachable Micro USB cables feature a three-pronged design for an easy, secure connection and safe transport in your travel bag.

Use profiles carefully

Separate game and work profiles can prevent accidental remaps, but profile switching itself must be dependable. If the board stores profiles onboard, test it on a second computer; if it depends on software, know what happens when that software is closed or blocked by a game launcher.

Keep the physical legend understandable

Layer symbols printed on keycaps help only when they match the firmware. If you replace keycaps or load custom firmware, retain a written map. This small record saves time when a missing arrow or function key is suddenly needed.

Does a mini keyboard improve gaming performance?

No controlled performance improvement is established by the layout alone. The credible benefit is indirect: a smaller board may let you place the mouse and keyboard in a more comfortable, repeatable position. That can make a setup feel better, especially for broad mouse movements, but it cannot guarantee higher accuracy, faster reactions or better competitive results. The consulted layout guides describe use cases and trade-offs, not a measured advantage over TKL or full-size boards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, there is no reliable named survey statistic for how many gamers use mini keyboards. Statements that 60% boards are popular among gamers describe a market tendency, not a measured percentage. Treat claims about popularity or esports superiority accordingly.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Buying by percentage alone: Compare the complete key map and modifier sizes before ordering.
  • Assuming every 60% has the same shortcuts: Read the manual for the exact model and firmware.
  • Ignoring non-gaming work: Test arrows, function keys and navigation commands in your daily applications.
  • Trading away too many binds for a few centimeters: Measure the actual mouse clearance; choose 65% or TKL if the space gain is small.
  • Expecting better aim automatically: Treat the board as an ergonomic and desk-space choice, then judge performance through your own consistent setup.
  • Forgetting future games: Review the most keybind-heavy title in your library before committing to the smallest layout.

The practical verdict

Gamers do use mini keyboards, and 60% boards are a legitimate choice when mouse room, portability and a minimal footprint matter more than dedicated keys. Choose 65% if arrows are important, TKL if you want arrows and a function row, and 96% or full-size if number-pad access or extensive binds are central to your games. The right decision comes from your desk measurements and key inventory—not from the assumption that a smaller keyboard is inherently faster.
