Do Mobs Despawn When You Leave a Minecraft Realm?

Leaving or logging out of a Minecraft Realm is not identified as a despawn trigger. Natural despawning depends on mob persistence, player distance, and edition-specific rules.

Usually, no. Simply leaving or logging out of a Minecraft Realm is not identified as a mob-despawn trigger in the official rules reviewed. Natural despawning is a separate mechanic, affected by factors such as mob persistence, player distance, edition, version, and—in Bedrock—simulation distance. Whether a Realm continues ticking with nobody online is not established by the official sources cited here.

Leaving a Realm is different from a mob despawning

Minecraft describes Realms as always-online servers where invited friends can access the active world even when its owner is offline. That does not mean a mob is guaranteed to keep moving or that the world continues processing every mechanic while no player is present. The official Realms and pause-feature information does not establish a universal empty-Realm ticking rule. Minecraft Realms Minecraft pause-feature article

For Bedrock, simulation distance controls how far away game mechanics—including entity behavior—are processed. Render distance controls what is drawn on screen, so a mob being out of view does not by itself show that it has despawned. Microsoft Learn: Simulation distance

What affects natural despawning?

  • Persistence: Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes list tempted, name-tagged, tamed, and bred mobs as examples of mobs set to persist and not naturally despawn under the described rules.
  • Player distance: Natural despawning can depend on how far a mob is from the nearest player.
  • Bedrock simulation distance: Bedrock’s simulation setting is relevant to entity behavior, and historical despawn thresholds differ by setting.
  • Edition and version: The specific distance values below come from Bedrock 1.16.0 notes published in 2020; they are not a guaranteed current rule for every edition or Realm configuration. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 release notes

Mojang’s 2020 Bedrock 1.16.0 notes give these examples. Treat them as version- and setting-specific guidance, not universal current thresholds.

Higher simulation distances Mobs can despawn at the edge of simulation distance or up to 128 blocks from the nearest player.
Fish Automatically despawn at a maximum range of 40 blocks or farther.

The notes also say: “Any mobs that have been set to persist (tempted, name-tagged, tamed, bred, etc.) will never naturally despawn.” That describes natural despawning under those rules; it is not a guarantee against every possible cause of mob loss.

How to reduce the chance of losing a mob

  1. Use a persistence method. Name-tagging, taming, or breeding are among the persistence examples listed in Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 notes.
  2. Keep naturally spawning mobs near an active player. Distance from the nearest player is part of the documented despawn rules; in Bedrock, simulation distance also matters.
  3. Check the edition and version before relying on a threshold. The cited 44-, 128-, and 40-block values are historical Bedrock 1.16.0 guidance, not a cross-edition guarantee.
