Nintendo lists the original Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as usable by wireless pairing on Switch 2. Nintendo’s controller compatibility listing also notes that selected retro controllers are for compatible games, not universal replacements.
Can original Joy-Con attach to Switch 2?
No. Original Joy-Con do not attach to the Switch 2 console. They can still be paired wirelessly, so use them detached for tabletop or TV play rather than attached handheld play. Nintendo says they can be charged using an original Nintendo Switch or compatible Joy-Con charging accessories, including a charging grip or two-way charging stand. Does the original Switch Pro Controller work on Switch 2?
Yes. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly, and Nintendo says it can be charged by connecting it to the Switch 2 dock with a USB cable. It does not have Switch 2-specific Pro Controller features such as the C Button, and its HOME Button cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep. Nintendo’s compatibility listing covers pairing, while Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guide describes feature limits. A Pro Controller can be a useful extra controller for supported games, but it is not a substitute where a game requires Joy-Con 2-only functions.

What older controllers cannot do on Switch 2
- Attach original Joy-Con to the console: they connect wirelessly only.
- Use Joy-Con 2 mouse controls: original controllers do not provide this Joy-Con 2-specific capability.
- Wake the console with HOME: older controllers without the relevant Switch 2 controls cannot exit sleep mode using HOME. Nintendo says a controller without a C Button can still start GameChat by selecting it from the HOME Menu.
Pairing establishes that a controller can connect; it does not establish that a particular game supports every controller or control method.
Check compatibility for the game you want to play
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible because the new console’s hardware differs. Its compatibility information identifies some titles that require original Switch Joy-Con and Switch 2 game functions that require Joy-Con 2 features. Check Nintendo’s game compatibility listing and the individual game’s information when a controller requirement matters.
