Do Not Feed the Monkeys has a generally favorable critical reception: Metacritic’s all-platform page lists a 77 Metascore from 18 critic reviews, accessed October 7, 2026. Reviewers are drawn to its unusual surveillance premise, humor and curiosity-driven stories, while some point to its short length and the pressure of managing time and resources.
What is Do Not Feed the Monkeys?
Steam calls it “A digital voyeur simulator where you watch strangers through surveillance cameras.” You observe people, piece together clues and decide whether to intervene, even though the club you belong to forbids it. The game blends point-and-click investigation with management, choices and resource management; Steam also lists multiple endings among its tags. Steam’s store page identifies Fictiorama Studios as developer and Alawar as publisher.
Release dates depend on the source’s label: Steam lists the PC release as October 23, 2018, while Metacritic’s details page lists June 1, 2020 as the initial release date. Metacritic names PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PlayStation 5 among the platforms.
What do the critic scores say?
Metacritic’s all-platform page reports a 77 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” based on 18 critic reviews. This is a changing aggregate, not a review conducted by Metacritic itself; the score and review count may change.

The smaller PC-specific listing contains three reviews, all published in 2018. It is a separate sample from the 18-review all-platform aggregate:
| Publication | Date | Score listed by Metacritic | Review emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vandal | October 23, 2018 | 80 | An interesting adventure with humor, surprises and an unusual blend of familiar ideas. |
| Hobby Consolas | November 12, 2018 | 80 | Called the concept one of the industry’s most original proposals in recent years. |
| IGN Spain | October 26, 2018 | 78 | Praised its distinctive point-and-click adventure, while noting that it falls short on length. |
These scores and summaries appear in Metacritic’s PC critic-review listing. They indicate favorable reactions in that three-review PC sample, but should not be treated as the complete set of reviews behind the broader Metascore.

What critics praise—and what they qualify
An unusual hook that rewards curiosity
The central appeal is the act of watching separate feeds and working out what is happening. The premise turns observation into a choice: gather information, follow clues and decide whether to respect the club’s rule or interfere. The Metacritic-listed PC reviews repeatedly point to the concept’s originality, humor and capacity for surprises.
Steam reproduces short excerpts attributed to Kotaku and Rock Paper Shotgun. Kotaku compares the game’s exploration of morality and empathy with Papers, Please; Rock Paper Shotgun highlights the multiple endings and the challenge of juggling video feeds. These are excerpts presented by Steam, not a claim that every critic shares the same comparison or emphasis. See Steam’s store page.

Time and resources are part of the experience
The surveillance puzzle is not isolated from the management demands: you have to balance watching with time and money. One Switch review excerpt listed by Metacritic praises that balancing act as consistently engaging; other Switch excerpts identify resource-management pressure as a drawback. Those are individual review perspectives, not a universal verdict. Metacritic’s review page collects the broader platform coverage.
Short length is the clearest reservation
IGN Spain’s Metacritic-listed PC review says the game entertains but “falls short on length.” That makes expected playtime a useful factor for prospective players: the premise may hold strong appeal, but critics’ praise does not imply a long experience.

Is Do Not Feed the Monkeys worth playing?
It is a good fit if the idea of piecing together strangers’ stories from surveillance feeds sounds more appealing than conventional action, and if you enjoy making choices under time and resource pressure. Its favorable aggregate and praise for its original premise support a recommendation for players drawn to observation, deduction and morally uneasy decisions.
Consider another game if you want a lengthy experience above all, dislike juggling competing management demands, or would rather avoid voyeurism and mature themes. Steam’s developer-provided content notice warns of frequent violence or gore and general mature content; its tags also include sexual content and nudity. The game’s own description foregrounds privacy invasion and voyeurism, so check Steam’s current content notice for details before playing.
