Some Genshin Impact fans ship Hu Tao and Zhongli, and the fan pairing is commonly called ZhongTao. It is a fan interpretation, not a confirmed in-game romance: the game establishes that they work together and have a familiar, bantering relationship, but does not identify them as a couple.
What is ZhongTao?
ZhongTao is the fandom pairing name for Hu Tao and Zhongli. A fan-maintained shipping reference lists it as a fanon pairing and describes the characters as close friends or work colleagues. It also records alternate fan names and shared event dialogue. The reference page is useful for confirming that the ship name exists, but it is not an official source on the characters or a measure of the pairing’s popularity.
What does the game establish about them?
HoYoWiki’s relationship summary says Hu Tao employed Zhongli at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. Its character voice-over entries show their familiarity through teasing assessments: Hu Tao describes Zhongli as knowledgeable but somewhat dusty in personality, while Zhongli says, “I cannot deal with that child.” These remarks support a reading of comic exasperation and workplace familiarity, not romantic intent. HoYoWiki’s Hu Tao reference provides the in-game context.
Is ZhongTao canon?
No confirmed romance between Hu Tao and Zhongli is established by the cited in-game relationship details or voice-over comments. “Fanon” means fans create or interpret the pairing; it does not mean the game confirms it. The ship can be meaningful to fans without being canon.

Why do fans interpret their relationship differently?
Some fans read their banter and work connection romantically, while others see them as close friends or colleagues. A fan-focused article also reports that some readers interpret their dynamic as father-daughter-like. That is one reported fan reading, not an official description or a demonstrated consensus. The secondary article illustrates that different interpretations circulate; it does not establish how representative any one view is.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How popular is the pairing?
ZhongTao is described as popular in the secondary article, but no survey, count, or method is provided to support a ranking. The available sources establish that people use the pairing name and discuss the ship; they do not show how many fans ship it, whether it is the most popular pairing for either character, or how it compares with other ships.
