Yes—both Nintendo DS games include local wireless features, but neither has cooperative story mode. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass offers two-player Battle Mode, one-card DS Download Play, and Tag Mode item exchanges. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks expands local Battle Mode to two to four players and adds one-card Download Play, multi-card play, and Contact Mode treasure trading.
These capabilities require original DS-family hardware and the DS game-card releases. The Wii U Virtual Console editions are one-player and omit the original Multi-Card Play and DS Download Play features. Phantom Hourglass’s former Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battles also ended when Nintendo discontinued that service on May 20, 2014.

What “multiplayer” means in these Zelda games
Multiplayer in both titles is a separate local feature rather than a second player joining the main adventure. The single-player campaigns remain the normal way to explore dungeons, solve puzzles and progress through the story. Multiplayer consists of competitive matches and wireless item exchanges.

- Download Play: One system hosts a match while other nearby DS systems download the temporary game software.
- Item exchange: Each game has a wireless mode for sending collectible items or parts to another player.
There is no documented two-player campaign or cooperative dungeon mode in either game.

Phantom Hourglass multiplayer features
Two-player local Battle Mode
The Phantom Hourglass instruction manual specifies Battle Mode for two Nintendo DS systems and two Phantom Hourglass game cards. Both players use their own cartridge and connect through local wireless communication. This is a head-to-head mode, not a cooperative version of Link’s adventure.
Because the documented cartridge requirement is two cards, buying or borrowing only one physical copy does not satisfy the standard Battle Mode setup. You also need two compatible DS-family systems within wireless range.
One-card DS Download Play
Phantom Hourglass also supports a download battle using one game card. The host inserts the cartridge, starts the Download Play-compatible battle, and the second DS joins by downloading the required data from the host. The manual specifically warns that results from this mode are not saved, so a completed match does not create a persistent record on the guest system.
Download Play is useful when only one person owns the cartridge, but it does not turn the story campaign into a shared game. It is a temporary battle session.
Tag Mode item exchange
Tag Mode lets you place ship parts or treasure in magical boxes and exchange those items wirelessly with other players. The mode is designed for players who pass near one another rather than for a conventional match. Phantom Hourglass continues searching for other players even when the DS is closed, allowing a system in sleep-like closed-lid use to look for Tag Mode contacts.

Tag Mode is therefore an exchange system, not another way to play the Battle Mode arena. Its purpose is collecting and trading items that can help personalize or improve your ship-related inventory.
Former Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battles
The original Phantom Hourglass manual described Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battles against friends, rivals or players worldwide. Nintendo’s current product information states that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was discontinued on May 20, 2014. As a result, the official online battle service documented in the manual is no longer available, even if the game still displays references to it.

Spirit Tracks multiplayer features
Local Battle Mode for two to four players
Spirit Tracks supports battles over DS Wireless Communications with two, three or four participants. Nintendo’s manual describes head-to-head play against up to three other players, making four the total player limit. Every participant needs a nearby compatible DS system.
The battle feature is competitive. It does not let a second person control a character alongside Link during the Spirit Tracks story, and it does not provide shared train exploration.
Single-card Download Play for up to three guests
One Spirit Tracks owner can host a Download Play session while up to three other DS users join without owning the game card. In practical terms, the host supplies the cartridge and the other systems download the temporary multiplayer software through DS Wireless Communications.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
This is the most economical way to assemble a four-player match, provided all four systems are compatible with DS Download Play and remain close enough for a local wireless connection.
Multi-card play
Spirit Tracks also supports multi-card play, in which each participant uses a separate Spirit Tracks game card. Multi-card play is the cartridge-based alternative to Download Play: it avoids the one-card host limitation but requires every player to own a copy.
Contact Mode treasure trading
Contact Mode allows players to trade treasure items with one another over DS Wireless Communications. Like Phantom Hourglass Tag Mode, this is an exchange feature rather than a cooperative adventure or a battle match. It is intended for passing collectible treasure between nearby players.
No documented official online battle mode
The Spirit Tracks multiplayer section documents local wireless Battle Mode, Download Play, multi-card play and Contact Mode. It does not document a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battle mode. You should not expect official online matchmaking comparable to the former Phantom Hourglass service.

What you need for local multiplayer
Hardware
Use Nintendo DS, DS Lite or DSi hardware with the original DS game-card releases. Each player needs a separate DS-family system. The systems must have their wireless communication enabled and be close enough to establish a local connection.

Cartridges
- Phantom Hourglass Battle Mode: two DS systems and two game cards are specified.
- Phantom Hourglass Download Play: two DS systems and one game card.
- Spirit Tracks Download Play: one host cartridge, with up to three additional DS systems joining as guests.
- Spirit Tracks multi-card play: each participant uses a Spirit Tracks game card.
Download Play does not permanently install the game on a guest system. The guest receives the temporary data needed for that session and must repeat the connection process for a later match.
How to start a one-card session
- Power on all participating DS-family systems and confirm that wireless communication is enabled.
- Insert the game card into the host system.
- On the host, open the game’s multiplayer option and choose the Download Play-compatible battle mode.
- On each guest DS, select the system menu’s DS Download Play option.
- Choose the host’s broadcast title from the list and accept the download.
- Wait for every guest to finish loading, then follow the game’s prompts to enter the battle.
The exact menu wording can vary slightly between DS models, but the defining requirement is that only the host has the cartridge. If the title does not appear on a guest system, check that the host has actually opened Download Play rather than ordinary multi-card multiplayer.

Multi-card Battle Mode
Multi-card play gives each participant a full cartridge and is the straightforward choice when everyone owns the game. In Spirit Tracks it supports the same local Battle Mode player range—two through four—but avoids the temporary download step. In Phantom Hourglass, the manual’s standard local Battle Mode setup calls for two cards.
Tag Mode and Contact Mode
These modes are built around exchanging game items, not fighting. Phantom Hourglass’s Tag Mode handles ship parts or treasure through magical boxes and can continue searching while the DS is closed. Spirit Tracks’s Contact Mode is described as treasure trading over DS Wireless Communications.

Because the modes exchange inventory rather than player-controlled characters, they do not provide cooperative puzzle solving, shared progression or a second-person campaign role.

Original DS cartridges versus Wii U Virtual Console
| Release | Players | Wireless multiplayer availability |
|---|---|---|
| Original DS cartridge on DS, DS Lite or DSi | As specified by each game’s local modes | Supports the documented DS Wireless, Download Play and cartridge features |
| Wii U Virtual Console version | One player | Nintendo says Multi-Card Play and DS Download Play are not included |
The Wii U editions are convenient for playing the campaigns, but they are not substitutes for the original local multiplayer setup. Nintendo lists both Virtual Console releases as one-player and specifically excludes Multi-Card Play and DS Download Play. Choose the DS cartridge versions if local battles or wireless exchanges are the reason you want either game.
Troubleshooting local connections
A guest cannot see the host
- Confirm the host selected Download Play when using one cartridge; ordinary multi-card play requires a cartridge in every participating system.
- Make sure all systems are DS-family hardware with wireless communication enabled.
- Move the systems closer together and restart the multiplayer setup if the broadcast disappears.
The match will not support the expected number of players
Phantom Hourglass Battle Mode is documented for two players. Spirit Tracks allows up to four in local Battle Mode, but a one-card session has one host and no more than three Download Play guests. A fifth system cannot join.
You are using a Wii U copy
The Wii U Virtual Console release is one-player and omits the original DS Download Play and Multi-Card Play options. No controller or menu setting can restore those DS-specific wireless functions; use the original cartridge and compatible DS systems instead.
Which game is better for local play?
Choose Phantom Hourglass if two-player battles, one-card Download Play and ship-part or treasure exchanges are enough. Its distinctive Tag Mode adds a passive way to trade items, but its official online battles are historical only.
Choose Spirit Tracks if you want a larger local group. Its four-player Battle Mode ceiling, one-card support for three guests, multi-card option and Contact Mode treasure trading give it the broader set of documented local arrangements. Neither game should be purchased expecting cooperative story play or active official online matchmaking.
