Usually, no. A physical PS5 game does not run directly from its disc. The console copies the playable data to its internal SSD or a compatible installed M.2 SSD before you play, so the installed footprint is normally close to the digital edition. The disc can reduce the first download when it contains the required launch data, but patches, downloadable content and other required files can still need internet storage.
The disc also remains the ownership check for most disc-based games. You generally need it inserted whenever you launch that installation, even after every file has been copied to the SSD.

What a PS5 game disc actually does
On PS5, a disc is an installation source and a license, not a storage device from which the console continuously streams the game. PlayStation documentation says game and saved data are stored on PS5 console storage, and Sony’s PS5 FAQ states that PS5 games must reside on the console’s internal SSD before play.
That requirement removes the usual space-saving assumption about discs. The optical disc may hold tens of gigabytes of game data, but those files are copied to fast solid-state storage during installation. Once installed, the console uses the SSD copy for loading and gameplay.

Installing a single-disc game
- Insert the game disc into the PS5.
- Allow the console to copy the game data to its internal SSD or installed compatible M.2 SSD.
- Wait for the installation to finish before assuming the game is ready. A title can show a playable section while more data continues to install.
- Start the game and allow any available update to download and install.
The disc is not a way to bypass the SSD requirement. Removing the disc after installation does not leave a playable, disc-free copy on the console.
Installing a two-disc release
Some large games split their data across two discs. Sony’s instructions specify inserting the data disc first and then the play disc. The installation completes automatically after the discs are used in that order. The play disc is the one used for the ownership check after setup.
Do physical and digital PS5 games use the same amount of storage?
In most cases, the installed sizes are comparable because both versions place the game files on SSD storage. The exact result depends on the individual title and the content included in its edition. Sony does not publish a universal average or percentage showing that physical copies are smaller.

A disc can therefore save bandwidth or waiting time during the first installation without saving meaningful long-term SSD capacity. A digital edition may already include a newer build when downloaded, while a disc may begin with an older launch build that then receives a large update. Conversely, a particular disc package can include files that a digital download handles as a separate download. There is no single disc-versus-digital size difference that applies to every PS5 game.

What updates, patches and extra content add
Automatic updates
PlayStation Support says that when you start a game or app, it automatically updates to the newest available version. The console can therefore download files after the disc installation is complete. To check manually, highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button on the controller and choose Check for Update.
Why a disc may not contain everything
A disc can contain the launch build without containing every later change. Patches may fix bugs, add features or replace existing data. A game can also require separate downloads for downloadable content, additional language packs or other title-specific files. Those downloads occupy console storage just like the files copied from the disc.
There is no universal rule saying that every PS5 disc contains a complete, permanently playable offline version. The amount of data on the disc and the files required after installation vary by game, edition and the developer’s release plan. If the console requests a download, that request does not mean the disc installation failed; it usually means the installed build needs newer or additional content.

Game patches are separate from PS5 system-software updates. Sony says the console can notify you when an inserted game disc requires a later PS5 system-software version. Updating the console operating system is a different task from updating the game itself, and either may be required before a particular title works as expected.

Does a PS5 disc avoid the download?
Sometimes it reduces the initial download, but it does not guarantee a download-free setup.
- When the disc contains the launch data: the PS5 can copy that data locally instead of downloading the same base files.
- When patches are available: the console can download them automatically when you start the game, or when you select Check for Update.
- When extra content is separate: downloadable content, language packs and title-specific required files can still need network access.
- When the disc contains an older build: the difference between the disc version and the current version can be substantial, depending on the game.
For a planned offline installation, check the game’s own requirements rather than assuming that the disc includes every file. The disc can provide the base installation, but only the publisher’s implementation determines whether additional data is mandatory.
The disc is also the play license
After installation, the PS5 still checks the physical copy when you launch most disc-based games. That is why a game can occupy SSD space and still ask you to insert the disc. The copied files provide performance and loading speed; the disc verifies that you own or are using the physical copy.
This differs from a digital purchase, where the account entitlement performs the ownership check. It also affects lending and resale: a physical copy can move between people in a way an account-bound digital entitlement generally cannot.

What to do when the PS5 storage is full
Remove games you can reinstall
Deleting an installed game removes its SSD copy, not your ownership. A disc owner can reinstall from the physical media later, while a digital owner can download the title again from the purchasing account. Save data is managed separately, so verify which data you are deleting before confirming.
Use USB extended storage as an archive
Sony lists USB extended storage as a storage-management option. It can hold PS5 games for transfer, allowing you to move an installation off the internal SSD when you are not playing it. Sony’s FAQ specifies that a PS5 game must be copied back to the internal SSD before it can be played, so USB extended storage is an archive and transfer location rather than a direct play location for PS5 titles.
Install a compatible M.2 SSD for playable expansion
A compatible M.2 SSD is the direct expansion path for installing and playing PS5 games without moving them back and forth. The drive must meet Sony’s compatibility, interface, cooling and performance requirements. Check the current PS5 M.2 installation guidance before buying or fitting a drive; capacity alone does not establish compatibility.

Use selective installation when a game supports it
Some supported games offer Preferred Install options. These can let you prioritize a mode and remove selected modes or other content you do not use. The feature is title-specific, so its controls and the amount of space recovered differ from one game to another.

Other storage-management choices
Sony also lists cloud storage and a USB drive among storage-management options. Their usefulness depends on the type of data involved and the feature’s requirements. They should not be confused with an M.2 SSD: only a compatible M.2 installation provides additional local storage from which PS5 games can run directly.

Eligible PS4 disc owners can download a digital PS5 version on a PS5 that has a disc drive. The downloaded PS5 version occupies storage like any other PS5 game. PlayStation says the original PS4 disc must remain inserted every time the upgraded PS5 game is played, because it is still the ownership check.
This upgrade can result in both a PS4 installation and a PS5 installation if you keep both versions. If you need space, review the two entries separately before deleting one, and keep the version whose saves, features or multiplayer compatibility you actually need.

Practical installation workflows
Physical copy
- Insert the disc and confirm that the console recognizes the intended game.
- For a two-disc release, follow the publisher’s data-disc-then-play-disc order.
- Let the copy process finish on the SSD.
- Start the game and allow the available update to complete, or use Options > Check for Update.
- If storage is tight, move the installation to USB extended storage for later transfer, delete it for a future reinstall, or install it on a compatible M.2 SSD.
Digital copy
- Start the download from the game library or store account that owns the title.
- Choose the internal SSD or compatible M.2 SSD as the installation location when the console offers that choice.
- Allow the initial download and any current update to finish.
- If the title supports Preferred Install, remove unused modes or content after installation.

What this means for buying physical games
Choose a disc for reasons such as resale, lending, collecting or reducing the first network download, not as a dependable way to expand free SSD capacity. Choose digital when account-based access and immediate downloading matter more than transferring the copy. In either case, plan for the game’s installed files, future patches and any optional content you intend to keep.
