Usually, not on a general timetable—but the answer depends on what you bought and where your PlayStation account is registered. Sony’s current US materials do not state a general expiration period for prepaid PlayStation Store gift cards or money already in a US PlayStation Store Wallet. However, Sony warns that some voucher and product codes have their own printed expiry dates. In Australia and New Zealand, unused wallet funds may expire after 36 months where local law permits. A gift card, a content voucher and redeemed wallet money are different products, so check the applicable rule before assuming any value is permanent.
At a glance: the rule depends on the region and the code type
| Region or item | What Sony’s published material says | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| United States prepaid PlayStation Store gift card | The US terms reviewed do not state a general expiration period for the prepaid card or for wallet funds. | Check the card’s own terms and keep the receipt. Do not treat the absence of a stated period as a guarantee that every promotional or special-purpose code is timeless. |
| United States voucher or product code | Some codes have an expiry date printed on the voucher, and some product codes must be redeemed before a specified date. | Read the date and the terms printed on that particular voucher. |
| Australia and New Zealand wallet funds | Funds that remain unused for 36 months after being added to the wallet may expire if local law allows. Sony says it will email notice before expiry. | Spend or otherwise use the balance before the 36-month period where that regional term applies. |
| United Kingdom | The cited UK voucher terms establish country-specific codes, not a general expiration period for every gift card or wallet balance. | Match the code to the account country and check the individual voucher terms. |
| Any other country | Rules can differ by local terms, card type and promotion. | Use the terms for the country assigned to your account and inspect the card or code itself. |
The safest answer to “Do PlayStation gift cards expire?” is therefore: some codes do, while Sony does not publish one universal expiration rule for all PlayStation gift cards and wallet balances.

First identify what you have
People often use “gift card” to describe three different things. Identifying the item prevents you from applying the wrong expiration rule.

PlayStation Store gift card that adds wallet credit
A standard PlayStation Store gift card contains a code that adds a stated amount to an eligible adult account’s PlayStation Store Wallet. After redemption, the wallet balance can pay for PlayStation Store content and services. Sony describes wallet funds as non-refundable, so redeeming a card is not a way to convert unwanted credit back into cash.

Voucher or product code for specific content
A voucher may unlock a game, add-on, subscription, in-game item or another defined benefit rather than simply adding cash-like wallet credit. Sony’s US troubleshooting guidance specifically says to make sure a code is still valid because “Some codes have an expiry date listed on the voucher.” That warning applies to the individual code; it should not be expanded into a claim that every ordinary gift card expires, or that no gift card ever can.
Funds already redeemed into the Wallet
Once a valid gift card has been redeemed, the question changes from “when does the code expire?” to “does this region place a time limit on unused wallet funds?” The answer is regional. The US material reviewed does not state a general time limit, while Australia and New Zealand publish a 36-month condition subject to local law.
What the US rules establish
Sony’s current US terms explain prepaid cards, wallet restrictions and product-code expiration, but they do not state a general number of days, months or years after which every prepaid PlayStation Store gift card or every US wallet balance disappears. That is a narrower and more accurate statement than saying US gift cards “never expire.” Terms, promotions and laws can change, and an individual voucher can carry its own deadline.

Codes can still have individual deadlines
The US voucher troubleshooting page tells customers to verify that a code remains valid and notes that some vouchers display an expiry date. The US terms likewise say that some product codes must be used before the expiration date specified for that code. Look at the physical card, email or receipt for wording such as “valid until,” “redeem by” or a calendar date. A date attached to a content promotion is evidence about that code only.
The account and card must use the same country currency
Prepaid cards are tied to the country assigned to the PlayStation account and to the currency issued for that country. A card purchased in one market is not automatically usable on an account registered in another. This restriction can make a perfectly valid, unused code appear to have failed; it is not proof that the card expired.
Wallet money is not refundable
Sony says wallet funds can be spent on PlayStation Store content and services, but wallet funds are non-refundable. Redeem only on the account that is meant to hold the balance. A family member cannot normally move the resulting wallet credit to a different account simply because the card was intended as a gift.

Australia and New Zealand: the 36-month wallet condition
Sony’s Australia/New Zealand terms contain an explicit rule that is absent from the US terms reviewed: “If you do not use PSN Wallet funds within 36 months of adding them, they may expire, if applicable local laws in your country allow.” The condition concerns money after it has been added to the wallet, not a universal statement about every unredeemed card in every shop.
Sony says it will email the account holder before wallet funds expire. Keep the account’s email address current and check spam or filtering folders so a notice is not missed. Because the clause is subject to local law, the legal effect can depend on the country covered by the account and any consumer-protection rule that applies there.
If you are in Australia or New Zealand, record the date on which you redeem a card, especially when you maintain a small balance for occasional purchases. Using the wallet balance within the stated period avoids leaving the decision to an automated expiry process.

What the UK and other regions mean in practice
The UK voucher terms cited for this question establish that codes are country-specific unless Sony states otherwise. They do not establish one general expiration period for all UK gift cards or wallet funds. A UK account should therefore be treated as a separate case: match the voucher to the UK account region, then read the code’s own terms.
The same discipline applies elsewhere. Sony’s support guidance is the most useful cross-region starting point because it tells users to check whether a code remains valid. Local terms may add a wallet-expiration rule, a consumer-law exception or a promotional deadline that does not appear in another country’s terms.

How to check a PlayStation card or code before redeeming it
- Identify the product. Decide whether it is a wallet-funding gift card, a content or subscription voucher, or funds already redeemed to a wallet.
- Read every date and condition. Inspect the back of a physical card, the email containing a digital code and any receipt. Search for an expiry date, a redemption deadline, country limitation or special promotion language.
- Confirm the account country. On the account that will redeem the code, verify the country or region assigned to the PlayStation Store. The code’s country and currency must match unless the voucher explicitly says otherwise.
- Check whether it was already redeemed. A used code will not work a second time. Ask the purchaser or recipient for proof of redemption before assuming the code is expired.
- Redeem on the intended adult account. Wallet funds attach to that account and are not refundable. Do not enter a valuable card on a temporary or incorrect account.
- Save the evidence. Keep the card, receipt, order email and the date of redemption until the balance or content appears correctly. These details help support investigate a failed code.
If a PlayStation code does not work
A rejection message does not by itself establish expiration. Work through the following checks in order.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Recheck the printed validity date. Some vouchers have a specific expiry date. If the date has passed, the code may no longer be redeemable under its terms.
- Verify the country match. A code from another country or currency normally cannot be applied to the account you are using.
- Enter the characters carefully. Compare similar-looking letters and numbers, and avoid adding spaces copied from an email or photograph.
- Check the product type. A code for a particular game, add-on or subscription may not add wallet money and may have different conditions from a standard gift card.
- Confirm activation when required. A store-issued physical card may need to have been activated at purchase. Keep the receipt showing the transaction.
- Contact PlayStation Support if the checks pass. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance advises contacting support when the problem persists. Provide the code’s purchase details, account region, error message and proof of purchase; do not publish the full code publicly.
Support may be unable to restore value where a code was bought for the wrong country, already redeemed, or outside its stated terms. The exact outcome depends on the code and the applicable regional policy.
Buying a gift card for someone else
Ask the recipient which country is assigned to their PlayStation account before buying. A card’s currency and market must correspond to that account, so a card bought while travelling or from an overseas marketplace can be unusable even when the recipient lives nearby.
Tell the recipient whether the purchase is a wallet card or a voucher for named content. For an Australia or New Zealand account, explain that unused wallet funds may be subject to the 36-month condition. For a US account, explain that no general period is stated in the current US terms reviewed, while individual promotional or product codes can still show a deadline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse an authorized seller, retain the receipt and avoid sending a code through a public post or message that can be forwarded. Once redeemed, the funds belong to the receiving account and Sony describes them as non-refundable.
Practical answer by situation
| Your situation | Best interpretation |
|---|---|
| Unused US PlayStation Store gift card with no printed date | Sony’s US materials reviewed do not state a general expiration period. Keep the purchase proof and check the card terms for exceptions. |
| US voucher showing “redeem by” a date | Treat that date as controlling for the specific voucher. |
| US wallet balance after redeeming a standard card | No general expiration period is stated in the US terms reviewed; the balance remains subject to Sony’s wallet restrictions and non-refundability. |
| Australia/New Zealand wallet balance older than 36 months | It may expire where local law allows. Sony says it will email notice before expiry. |
| Code rejected immediately | Check region, product type, activation, prior redemption and any printed deadline before concluding that it expired. |
Bottom line
Do not rely on a single worldwide “gift card expiration” rule. In the US, Sony’s current terms reviewed do not set a general expiry period for prepaid PlayStation Store gift cards or wallet funds, but some vouchers and product codes have individual deadlines. Australia and New Zealand expressly allow unused wallet funds to expire after 36 months where local law permits. Check the exact card, the account region and whether the value is still on the code or already in the wallet.
