Yes. PlayStation Plus Extra games can leave the Game Catalog on a published end date. Downloading one does not turn it into a permanent purchase: play access requires both an active membership tier that includes the catalog and the game still being offered. When a title is removed, its downloaded copy stops working through PlayStation Plus, and catalog-linked DLC or add-ons become unavailable as well.
The rule in one sentence
PS Plus Extra provides a renewable license to use eligible Game Catalog titles, not ownership of those games. Sony can remove a title after an announced end date, and the license ends even when the game remains installed on your PS5 or PS4.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus FAQ and plan information say that some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games have end dates and that those dates are publicized ahead of removal. Sony does not state a universal minimum notice period in those pages, so the notice can vary by title and region.

Choosing Download creates a service entitlement
Sony’s support instructions allow an Extra member to open the Game Catalog on PS5 or PS4, select an eligible title and choose Download. The game then appears in the member’s Game Library and is installed like other digital software. That library entry is a convenient way to find the software; it does not change the catalog’s licensing conditions.

The account is effectively checking two conditions when you play: whether it has an active plan with the necessary catalog benefit and whether the title remains available in that catalog. A download satisfies the storage requirement, not the ownership requirement.
What your membership tier contributes
Extra is the tier that includes downloadable Game Catalog access. Premium includes Extra’s benefits, so it also supports downloads of eligible Game Catalog titles. Essential includes the monthly games and core membership benefits but does not include the Game Catalog.
If an Extra or Premium subscription expires, access to catalog downloads is suspended. Renewing can restore access to a title that is still in the applicable catalog. A title that has already been removed is a different case: renewing does not recreate a catalog listing that Sony no longer offers. Purchasing the game separately supplies an ownership entitlement instead.

Before the removal date
Sony publishes end dates ahead of time for games scheduled to leave. Check the title’s listing rather than relying on the date you downloaded it; a game added recently can still be close to its scheduled removal. If you plan to finish a long campaign, treat the announced date as a hard deadline and leave time for patches, installation and offline sections that may still require an online license check.

On and after the end date
Once the title leaves, the catalog entitlement no longer covers it. The installed copy is not converted into a “forever” copy, and you cannot continue playing it solely because its files remain on the console. The practical result is that PlayStation Plus blocks access until the account obtains another valid entitlement, such as buying the game or using it through a renewed offering if Sony makes the title available again.
Deleting and reinstalling the files does not extend the license. Moving the installation between internal and external storage does not extend it either; the entitlement is attached to the account and the service listing, not to a particular drive.
What you can still keep
Your save data is separate from the catalog license. Removing a game from the catalog does not, by itself, erase saves stored on the console or in supported cloud storage. If you later buy the same game, the compatible release can normally use the existing save, but edition, platform and regional differences can affect compatibility. Keep backups before deleting a game you may purchase later.

DLC and add-ons follow the game’s access
Sony states that DLC and add-ons purchased for a game downloaded from the catalog work only while the underlying catalog entitlement is valid. Two events can therefore disable the add-on:

- Your PlayStation Plus membership expires.
- The base game leaves the Game Catalog.
In either situation, the add-on does not become a standalone purchase that can be used without the game’s valid entitlement. Sony says access to the DLC returns when you resubscribe or purchase the title. For a game that has permanently left the catalog, buying the base game is the dependable way to restore the relationship between the game and its add-ons; resubscribing helps when the title is still offered or is later brought back.
Buying DLC before checking the game’s scheduled end date can therefore create a period in which you own the add-on but cannot use it through the catalog. Check the base game’s status first, especially for season passes and expansions released near a removal date.

Catalog availability can vary by country, region and edition. A title listed for one account may not be listed for another, and a game’s PS4 and PS5 versions can have different availability. Use the catalog shown to your own account as the authoritative check.
Download versus Premium cloud streaming
Extra is the download-focused tier. Cloud streaming is a Premium feature and applies only to eligible titles in supported markets. Streaming does not bypass removal dates: if Sony removes a game from the service, the streaming entitlement ends along with the catalog listing.

Sony lists a minimum broadband requirement of 5 Mbps for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. These are service requirements published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for 2026, not guarantees that every game will be available or that your connection will deliver a particular latency or image quality. Wi-Fi congestion, household traffic and regional server capacity can still affect the experience.

How to check a game before downloading it
- Open the PlayStation Plus area. On PS5 or PS4, open the PlayStation Plus interface and go to Game Catalog.
- Open the game’s detail page. Confirm that the title is included for your account and that you are looking at the correct PS4 or PS5 version.
- Look for an end-date notice. If Sony has scheduled the title for removal, the listing or the service’s leaving-soon information should identify the date. Sony does not promise one fixed notice period for every game.
- Check the membership level. Make sure the account playing the game has an active Extra or Premium plan. An Essential subscription does not substitute for Game Catalog access.
- Review DLC separately. If you plan to buy an expansion, verify that the base game will remain available long enough to use it, or decide whether you will purchase the base game.
- Download and start the game while online. Installation places the data on the console, but the service can still validate the entitlement when you launch it later.
What to do when access is blocked
If your membership expired
Check the subscription status on the account that originally downloaded the game. Renew to Extra or Premium and then try the title again. This restores the catalog entitlement only if the game is still included for your account and region.
If the game left the catalog
Look for the game’s store purchase option. Buying the title gives you a separate ownership license, after which the installed files may be usable without the Game Catalog entitlement. If the game is later returned to the catalog, an active eligible membership can provide access again under the service’s current terms.

If DLC is unavailable
Confirm that the base game is playable first. DLC purchased for a catalog download depends on that base-game entitlement. Renew the appropriate membership while the game remains available, or purchase the base game if it has been removed. If the add-on still does not appear, verify that the game and DLC are from the same account, region and edition.

If the listing differs between accounts
Catalog rights are account- and region-specific. Sign in with the account that holds the membership, check the console’s store region and compare the exact edition. Do not assume that a title shown in another country’s announcement is available in your market.

A sensible decision rule is simple: use Extra for games you expect to finish during their listed availability window; buy a title when you need long-term access, intend to return years later or are investing in DLC that you do not want tied to a rotating catalog.
Common misconceptions
“It is in My Library, so I own it.”
Not necessarily. Sony places catalog downloads in the Game Library for convenience, but the entry still points to a subscription-based entitlement. Library placement is not proof of a purchase.
“The game is installed, so it should work offline forever.”
Installation and licensing are separate. The console can retain the data while access is blocked after membership expiration or catalog removal.
“Premium streaming means downloaded games cannot leave.”
Premium adds streaming for eligible titles; it does not make catalog games permanent. Both downloaded and streamed access depend on the title remaining offered.
“A DLC purchase protects the base game.”
It does not. Sony ties catalog DLC access to the underlying game entitlement. Purchasing an expansion does not prevent the base game from leaving the catalog.
Bottom line for planning your library
Think of PS Plus Extra as a rotating license library. Before downloading a long game or buying its add-ons, check the listing, note any announced end date and decide whether your membership will cover the time you need. Keep saves backed up, and purchase the base game when permanent access matters. An installed download is convenient, but only an active eligible entitlement—or a separate purchase—keeps it playable.
