Usually, no. If you obtained an RPG through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, your access to the game and its associated downloadable content ends when your membership expires or the title leaves the catalog. Buying an expansion does not give you a permanent right to launch a base game that you only accessed through the catalog.
Purchased DLC can become usable again if you resubscribe to an eligible PlayStation Plus plan or buy the base game separately. Streaming has an additional restriction: PlayStation says DLC and add-ons are not supported while a title is being streamed.

The rule in one sentence
PlayStation treats the right to play a catalog RPG and the right to use DLC as connected in practice. You may purchase an expansion, season pass or other add-on, but you still need an active entitlement to the compatible base game. When a Game Catalog entitlement expires, PlayStation removes access to both the catalog game and its associated DLC until you restore access to the base title.
PlayStation’s official FAQ states: “If your membership expires, or if the content leaves the service you’ll also lose access to the DLC and add-on content associated with that game.” The same guidance says that resubscribing or purchasing the title lets you use purchased DLC and add-ons again. It also says DLC and add-ons are not supported when streaming a title.

First identify how you got the RPG
The answer depends more on the base game’s entitlement than on the fact that the DLC was purchased. PlayStation describes several different Plus benefits, and they do not create identical rights.
Game Catalog titles
PlayStation Plus Extra includes the Game Catalog, while Premium includes the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. A catalog RPG is playable while your membership is active and while the title remains in the relevant catalog. If either condition stops being true, the catalog entitlement no longer provides a launchable base game.
Monthly games
PlayStation describes monthly games as downloadable games playable at no extra cost during an active membership. That is a different entitlement category from the Game Catalog. The official pages cited here do not provide one universal, DLC-specific rule for every monthly-game title, so a monthly-game RPG requires a title-specific check. Do not automatically apply the Game Catalog wording to every monthly-game expansion.

A separately purchased RPG
If you bought the base RPG outright, your Plus subscription is not the source of the base-game license. The restoration language in PlayStation’s FAQ indicates that buying the title restores use of purchased DLC, provided the game, add-on, account and region are compatible. In this case, an expired Plus membership does not by itself remove your separately purchased base game.

What changes when PS Plus expires?
For a downloaded Game Catalog RPG, expiration affects the base game and the add-ons as one practical package. The files may remain installed on your console, but an installed file is not the same as an active entitlement. Without access to the base title, the purchased expansion cannot be used.

Why buying DLC does not preserve the catalog game
A DLC purchase and a base-game entitlement are separate licenses, even though the add-on is designed to run inside the base game. Purchasing an expansion records your right to that add-on; it does not convert a catalog copy of the RPG into a permanent purchase.
That distinction matters when a player buys an expansion for a game supplied through Extra or Premium. The expansion can be tied to the player’s account, yet the player cannot launch it after Plus access to the base RPG ends. PlayStation’s stated remedy is to resubscribe or purchase the title. Once the base-game entitlement is valid again, the purchased add-on can be used, assuming normal compatibility requirements are met.
Downloaded versus streamed play
Downloaded Game Catalog RPG
Downloading the RPG gives the console local game data, but the right to launch that data is still checked against the account’s entitlement. While the membership and catalog listing are valid, a Store-purchased expansion can be installed alongside the game. If the membership expires or the game leaves the service, PlayStation says access to the game and its associated DLC is lost.

The practical recovery choices are limited to two: restore an eligible Plus entitlement by resubscribing, or purchase the base RPG. Reinstalling the DLC alone cannot replace the missing base-game license.
Streamed Game Catalog RPG
Streaming is not a workaround for DLC ownership. PlayStation explicitly says DLC and add-ons are not supported when streaming a title. A streamed RPG may be playable as a catalog benefit, but an expansion purchased for that title should not be expected to load in the streaming session.
To use the add-on, download the game through an eligible entitlement or own the base title separately. Whether a particular RPG supports downloading, streaming or both is title-specific, so check the options shown for that game.

What if the RPG leaves the catalog first?
The same loss-of-access rule applies when the title is removed from the service before your membership expires. PlayStation’s FAQ groups expiration and removal together: when the content leaves the service, access to the associated DLC and add-ons is also lost through that entitlement.

Your DLC purchase is not erased. It remains associated with the account, but it cannot be used until the compatible base game is available through a valid license. Buying that RPG separately is the direct way to regain access without relying on its return to a catalog.
How to restore a purchased expansion
- Confirm the original entitlement. Determine whether the RPG came from the Game Catalog, was claimed as a monthly game, was streamed, or was purchased separately.
- Check whether the title is still in the catalog. If it has been removed, an active Extra or Premium membership alone does not restore that catalog copy.
- Choose a base-game path. Resubscribe to an eligible Plus plan when the title is available through the catalog, or buy the RPG separately.
- Use a downloadable copy. If you were streaming, switch to a downloaded version under an eligible entitlement or use a separately purchased copy; PlayStation does not support DLC while streaming.
- Verify compatibility. The base game and add-on must match the account, region and edition requirements. A purchase in one region or for one edition may not activate with a different version.
- Launch the base game first. Once the valid base-game entitlement is restored, open the RPG and check that the purchased add-on is available in the game’s own menus.
Account, region and edition checks
Restoring access is not only a subscription question. PlayStation’s guidance assumes that the title and DLC are compatible with the account and region. Before buying the base game to recover an expansion, verify the following:
- The base RPG is being accessed from the same PlayStation account that bought the DLC.
- The game and add-on are sold for the same country or account region.
- The edition supports that particular expansion; standard, deluxe and regional editions can have different content entitlements.
- The downloaded copy is being used instead of a streamed session.
- The game is still available for purchase if you intend to replace the catalog entitlement.
These checks are especially important when an add-on appears in the account but is not recognized by the game. A valid DLC purchase cannot overcome a region mismatch, an incompatible edition or the absence of a launchable base game.
Common questions players ask
Will I lose an RPG expansion I paid for?
You do not lose the purchase record, but you lose the ability to use the expansion while the only base-game entitlement came from an expired or removed catalog listing. Resubscribing or buying the base RPG restores use when the versions are compatible.

Can I keep playing the DLC after canceling, until the current billing period ends?
The relevant cutoff is when the membership entitlement actually expires, not merely when automatic renewal is turned off. Until expiration, the catalog conditions still apply; after expiration, the catalog game and associated DLC are unavailable through that entitlement.
Does Premium make streamed DLC work?
No. PlayStation’s stated rule is that DLC and add-ons are not supported when streaming a title. Premium’s broader catalog access does not change that streaming limitation.
What happens if I resubscribe later?
PlayStation says purchased DLC and add-ons can be used again after you resubscribe, provided the title is available through the restored entitlement and the game and add-on are compatible.

Not automatically. PlayStation distinguishes monthly games from the Game Catalog, and the cited official guidance does not establish one complete DLC rule for every monthly-game scenario. Check the exact RPG’s entitlement and add-on information.
A safe way to buy DLC for a Plus RPG
If you are considering an expansion for an RPG currently supplied by Plus, decide first whether you would still want the add-on if the catalog entitlement ended. Treat the DLC as a purchase that requires a future base-game license, not as a way to secure the base game itself.
- Record whether the game is a Game Catalog title, a monthly game or a separate purchase.
- Prefer a downloaded copy when you plan to use add-ons; streaming does not support them.
- Check the catalog listing and the game’s region and edition before purchasing.
- Keep in mind that the title can leave the catalog even while your membership remains active.
- If uninterrupted access matters, budget for the standalone base game rather than relying solely on Plus availability.
The decisive question is always: what valid license will let this account launch the base RPG after the current Plus entitlement ends? Once that is answered, the DLC outcome follows PlayStation’s rule.
