Usually, you cannot assume they do. “PS1 remaster” may describe a full remake, a visual remaster, a straight port, or an original PlayStation release running through an emulator. Save transfers, cheat codes and multiplayer therefore depend on the exact game, edition, platform, region and update.
Sony’s guidance for selected PlayStation classics confirms emulator features such as saving at any time and rewinding, but it does not promise that an original PlayStation memory-card save, cheat system or multiplayer mode will carry over. Check each feature separately before buying or starting a new release.

What “PS1 remaster” can mean
The label covers releases with very different technology. A remake may rebuild the game in a new engine; a remaster may keep the original game while replacing assets or adding quality-of-life features; a port may make few changes; and a PS1 classic may run the original software inside a modern compatibility layer. Those differences determine whether old data and features still have anything compatible to connect to.
- Remake: New code can use a completely different save format, cheat system and multiplayer architecture.
- Remaster: Some original logic may remain, but modified versions can still reject old saves or remove codes.
- Port: The game may preserve more behavior, yet the target platform still needs a way to read a PS1 memory-card image.
- PS1 classic under emulation: The game can offer save states and rewind without supporting a physical memory-card file.
Identify the release name, platform, region and version number before treating any compatibility claim as applicable to your copy.

Can I use my original PS1 save on the remaster?
Only when the publisher explicitly supports importing it. A save on an original memory card is not automatically the same thing as a modern console save file. A remake might store progress in an entirely new format, while an emulated classic might create a virtual memory card or separate save-state files.
Three kinds of “save” that are easy to confuse
- Native game save: Progress written by the game, traditionally to a PS1 memory card.
- Save state: An emulator snapshot of the whole running game. It is separate from the title’s normal save menu and may not exist on original hardware.
- Cloud save: A copy synchronized by a modern service. It only works with the platform’s supported save format and account system.
Sony’s May 23, 2022 PlayStation Plus guide says selected original PlayStation and PSP classics can provide an interface to save at any time or rewind. Those conveniences describe the emulator experience; they do not establish that a physical PS1 memory-card save can be imported.
Sony also says downloaded PlayStation Plus catalog games save data to the PS4 or PS5 console on which they are played. Its support documentation describes cloud storage for PS4 and PS5 data through PlayStation Plus. Neither statement confirms compatibility with a save that originated on an original PS1 memory card.

What an explicit transfer feature looks like
A supported transfer normally appears in the game’s product description, manual, release notes or an in-game import menu. Look for wording such as “import original save,” “transfer PS1 memory-card data” or a documented conversion tool. “Save anywhere,” “resume,” “quick save” and “cloud backup” do not mean the same thing.
Do PS1 classics on PS5 support the original cheat codes?
There is no blanket guarantee. A classic running close to the original software may still recognize an old button sequence, but a remaster or remake can alter menus, timing, memory addresses or unlock conditions. Some releases remove cheats, replace them with accessibility options or put unlocks behind a new menu.
How to verify cheats
- Find the exact release and region. Codes can differ between regional versions and reissues.
- Check the publisher’s manual, support page and update notes for a listed cheat menu or code compatibility.
- Compare the instructions with the modern controller layout. A code requiring original shoulder buttons or a specific timing window may need equivalent inputs.
- Test on a disposable save. Some codes disable trophies, achievements or normal progression, and an incorrect sequence may have no visible result.
Do not infer cheat support from save-state support. A save state can preserve the game’s current memory but does not prove that a code-entry routine remains available or that the publisher intends it to work.

Does the remastered version still have local multiplayer?
“Multiplayer” is too broad to answer by itself. Determine which original mode you mean and whether the modern edition implements it.

Sony’s general PlayStation Plus support statement says most PS4 and PS5 games require a subscription for online multiplayer. That policy does not prove that a particular PS1 classic retains its original multiplayer, especially when the original mode was local or used a console-link cable.
Questions to answer for a specific game
- How many players did the original support?
- Was play local, split-screen, link-based or online?
- Does the product page list multiplayer for this platform and edition?
- Does the manual explain extra controllers, a multitap or a second console?
- Did a later update change player counts or remove a mode?
A reliable compatibility check before you start
- Record the identity. Write down the game title, whether it is a remake, remaster, port or classic, the platform, region and installed update.
- Check official documentation. Read the publisher’s product page, manual and release notes. Search specifically for “save import,” “memory card,” “cheat,” “local multiplayer,” “link” and “online.”
- Separate native saves from emulator tools. Confirm whether the documentation refers to normal in-game saves, virtual memory cards, save states or cloud storage.
- Inspect the menus. Look for an import or conversion option, a cheat menu and the listed multiplayer modes before overwriting or deleting anything.
- Make a backup of original hardware data. Preserve the physical memory card and any documented image of it. Do not assume a modern console can read the card directly.
- Test with a duplicate. If an import exists, use a copy first. Confirm that the game recognizes the file and that trophies, achievements and progression behave as expected.
- Verify multiplayer with the intended setup. Connect the required controllers or systems and confirm the player count and mode, rather than relying on a store label that only says “multiplayer.”
Why a transfer or feature can fail
The release uses a different save format
New engines and redesigned progression systems commonly make an old file unreadable. Starting the game in a virtual memory card does not convert an original card automatically.

The region or edition differs
Regional builds can use different identifiers, code sequences and save structures. A Japanese, North American and European release may not accept one another’s files even when the title appears identical.
An update changed behavior
Patches can add, disable or alter modes and code handling. Record the installed version when checking a guide, and read update notes for feature changes.

The original accessory is not part of the modern setup
A classic requiring a multitap, link cable or several controllers needs a modern equivalent. If the developer did not implement one, an adapter or original hardware may not restore the feature.

Cloud storage is mistaken for cross-generation conversion
Cloud storage backs up supported PS4 or PS5 data. It is not evidence that the service can interpret a PS1 memory-card file or synchronize progress between unrelated editions.
What the available official guidance establishes
The documented facts are narrow but useful: selected classics in the renewed PlayStation Plus offering received save-anywhere and rewind interfaces; downloaded catalog games store their saves on the PS4 or PS5 console used to play them; and PlayStation Plus provides cloud storage for supported PS4 and PS5 data. None of those statements creates a universal policy for original PS1 saves, cheats or multiplayer.
For a definite answer, the game’s publisher must identify the exact release and feature. Until it does, treat an old memory-card save, cheat code or multiplayer mode as unverified rather than preserved.
