Short answer: No PS5 plays original PS2 discs. PS2-origin games on PS5 are individual digital releases or catalog versions, and their extras are not standardized. Trophies, Sony’s “quick save” feature, and rewind must be confirmed for each release. Downloaded and streamed versions also keep saves in different places.
What “PS2 games on PS5” actually means
A PlayStation 5 is not backward-compatible with PS2 discs. Sony’s PS5 compatibility FAQ says the console supports PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, but not original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 software. Inserting a PS2 disc therefore will not install or launch the game.

When a PS2-era title appears on PS5, it is a separate release. It may be a downloadable PS4/PS5 remaster or remake, or an emulated classic offered through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Those versions can add modern features, but the features belong to that particular release rather than to the PS2 game library as a whole.

Availability depends on the title, your country, and the PlayStation Plus plan. Sony’s May 2022 service guide described original PS2 games as streamable through the Premium plan in selected markets, while remastered or remade versions could be downloaded on PS4 and PS5. Catalog membership and regional listings change, so check the current Store page or the Classics Catalog listing before buying or subscribing for one game.

How to check a specific game before you play
- Identify the release. Use the exact title shown in the PlayStation Store or Classics Catalog. A PS2 disc, a PS4 download, a PS5 version, a remake, and a streamed classic may be treated as different products.
- Check your region. Search the Store signed in to the account and country where you will play. Sony’s catalog guide notes that eligible titles and streaming availability vary by market.
- Confirm the access route. The listing will indicate whether the game is downloadable, streamable, or both. Streaming generally requires the appropriate PlayStation Plus membership in a supported market.
- Read the feature information. Look for a trophy list, quick-save wording, or rewind controls in the current listing and linked official announcement. Do not infer a feature from another game in the same series.
- Plan your save method. If you expect to switch between streaming and downloading, make sure you have PlayStation Plus cloud storage available for moving the save.
Trophies: why the answer is title-by-title
Some classic releases on current PlayStation hardware have trophy lists, but Sony has not published a universal rule that every PS2-origin release must include them. The official PlayStation.Blog service guide published May 23, 2022 says that “some original PlayStation and PSP titles may offer trophies” and gives examples such as Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf, IQ Intelligent Qube, and Syphon Filter. Sony also states that the feature is optional for developers.
That statement is specifically about original PlayStation and PSP titles. It does not establish that PS2 games as a class receive trophies, and it should not be used to promise a trophy list for a PS2-origin game. The official material available for this question does not provide a complete, current list of PS2-origin PS5 releases with trophies.
How to verify trophies
Open the exact digital release’s Store page while signed in. A trophy section or trophy-list indicator is the strongest practical confirmation. If the Store page does not show one, look for an official announcement for that release; avoid relying on a list for a different platform, region, remake, or compilation. Trophy support can differ even when the title’s name is nearly identical.
Quick save is not the same as unlimited emulator save states
Sony uses the term quick save for the save-anytime function described on selected classic releases. Its May 16, 2022 lineup announcement explains that selected original PlayStation and PSP classics received menus allowing players to save at any time. For PS2-origin games, Sony explicitly identifies Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4 as releases enhanced with quick save.
This evidence confirms the feature for those releases, not for every PS2 game on PS5. “Quick save” also does not automatically mean the game exposes several independently managed emulator states, permanent checkpoints, or a rewind buffer. Unless the game’s own documentation describes those controls, assume only the named function is available.
What to look for in the game
Launch the title and inspect its in-game or classic-game overlay menu for a quick-save command. The label and number of available slots can vary by release. If no such command appears, the game may rely only on its original save points or may use a different interface; do not create a save-state expectation from the fact that another classic includes one.

Rewind is also a release-specific option
Rewind lets you move back through recent gameplay so a mistake can be undone without loading an older conventional save. Sony documents rewind for Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4 among the enhanced PS2-origin releases. That is a confirmed example, not a platform-wide promise.

A downloaded version and a streamed version can also expose different enhancements, so verify the version you will actually launch.
Where saves live: download versus streaming
Sony separates save storage for downloaded and streamed PlayStation Plus games:
- Downloaded game: save data is stored on the PS5 or PS4 console storage in the usual local-save system.
- Streamed game: save data is stored in PlayStation’s streaming storage rather than as a normal local game save.
A streamed save does not automatically become the local save for a downloaded copy, and a local save does not automatically appear in the streaming version. Sony documents using PlayStation Plus cloud storage to move data between those forms of play.
Moving a save between versions
- Finish playing the source version and allow it to write the latest save.
- Use the console’s saved-data controls to upload the local save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage when moving from a download.
- Start the destination downloaded version and download the relevant save from cloud storage. For a streamed session, follow Sony’s cloud-save instructions for making the saved data available to streaming storage.
- Launch the game and confirm that the expected profile, progress, and save slot appear before deleting anything from the source.
Menus and eligibility can differ by console software and membership status. Keep the original save until the destination version has loaded it successfully; cloud synchronization is a transfer step, not a guarantee that two separate releases share one live save automatically.

“I own the PS2 disc. Can I put it in my PS5?”
No. The PS5 does not read original PS2 games. You need a separately sold or separately included digital release, and owning the disc does not by itself grant that version.

“The game is in Classics Catalog. Does that mean it has trophies?”
No. Catalog inclusion establishes an access route, not a trophy list. Open the exact title’s current Store or catalog information and confirm trophy support there.
“Every classic has a save-anywhere menu, right?”
No. Sony’s documented quick-save examples are title-specific. Treat the feature as present only when the particular release says so.
“Can I stream first and download later without losing progress?”
Possibly, but plan a cloud-storage transfer. Streaming and downloaded saves use different storage systems, and Sony says they do not transfer automatically.
“Why can a friend see a title that I cannot?”
PlayStation Plus catalogs and streaming support vary by country, membership tier, and title. Compare the regions and plans on the two accounts rather than assuming a console fault.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you have a PS2 disc? Stop there: it cannot be used directly on PS5.
- Do you have a named digital release? Record its exact platform label and edition.
- Is the release downloadable, streamed, or both in your country?
- Does the current listing show a trophy list?
- Does the release specifically mention quick save?
- Does it specifically mention rewind?
- Where will your save be stored, and will you need cloud storage to change play modes?
- Could catalog membership or regional availability change before you finish the game?
Using this checklist prevents the most common mistake: treating a feature of one enhanced classic as a standard capability of every PS2 game available on PS5.
