PS4 hardware is sold under several names, so “PS4 controller” can mean an official Sony DUALSHOCK 4 or a third-party controller that works with a PS4. The official identification instructions cited here are specifically for the DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. They establish that each controller has a serial-number field intended to identify that unit, and a separate model-number field that identifies its model.

If you need to identify one physical controller for a support conversation, read the serial printed on that controller rather than copying the model code from another unit.

Serial number versus model number
The two codes sit close together on the same label, which is why they are often confused. Their jobs are different: the serial points to the particular unit in your hands, while the model code describes the controller model and may appear on many controllers of that model.

The word “alphanumeric” means the serial combines letters and numbers. Copy every character exactly as printed, including the order of letters and digits. A model such as CUH-ZCT2U is visibly shorter than a 14-character serial and has a model-code format; it is not a substitute for the serial.
Sony’s official instructions are available in its DUALSHOCK 4 serial- and model-number support guide. The page is a Canada-region support page, but the physical label placement and character-length guidance it provides are the relevant details for identifying the controller.
Where to find the serial number
You do not need to connect the controller to a PS4, open a settings menu, or pair it wirelessly to read the printed serial. The number is on the controller itself.

- Disconnect the controller from anything that makes the rear label difficult to see. Place it face down so the rear shell is toward you.
- Look for the barcode on the back of the DUALSHOCK 4.
- Read the code printed below the barcode. That lower code is the 14-character serial number.
- Check the line above the barcode separately. That upper code is the model number, which may be up to 12 characters.
- Record the serial exactly as printed before contacting support or putting the controller away.
If the label is small or the characters are difficult to distinguish, use bright, even light and compare the code with the 14-character length stated by Sony. Do not “complete” a partly visible serial by guessing. An incorrect character can turn the number into a different identifier.
How to avoid reading the wrong code
Use the barcode as the landmark
The barcode provides the reference point: serial below, model above. Start by finding the barcode instead of searching randomly across the rear plastic. This is especially useful when the label contains other regulatory or manufacturing markings.
Count the serial characters
Sony states that a DUALSHOCK 4 serial contains 14 alphanumeric characters. Counting the characters is a practical check that you have not copied the shorter model code. The model number may contain up to 12 characters, so its position and length both help distinguish it.

A model number describes a model family. Sony’s support example, CUH-ZCT2U, illustrates the kind of code you may see above the barcode. Because that code is a model identifier, multiple controllers can carry the same model number. It cannot tell support which individual unit you own.

Why PlayStation Support asks for both numbers
Sony recommends having the serial and model numbers available when contacting PlayStation Support. Providing both gives the support representative the two pieces of identification shown on the controller: the model designation and the unit-level serial.
Keep the numbers together in your notes, but label them clearly. A useful record has two separate lines, for example:
- Serial number: the 14-character code below the barcode.
- Model number: the code above the barcode, such as the CUH-ZCT2U example in Sony’s guidance.
That format prevents a support conversation from being delayed because the shorter model code was supplied where the serial was requested. Sony’s recommendation to have the numbers “to hand” appears in its support guidance, so you can prepare them before opening a support request rather than trying to read the label during a call or chat.
What if the label is worn or unreadable?
The cited Sony instructions identify the printed location but do not provide a second official location, an on-console menu that reproduces the controller serial, or a recovery procedure for a damaged label. Do not infer a serial from the model number, the barcode image, or another controller.

Start with the information that remains legible. If the model number can still be read but the serial cannot, tell support that the model is available and the serial label is damaged or unreadable. If part of the serial is visible, provide only the characters you can verify and explain that the rest cannot be read. This is more reliable than submitting a guessed 14-character string.
For a controller you have not yet purchased, a listing photo that shows only a model code does not establish the serial number of the particular unit. The model can identify the type of controller, but the serial is printed on the individual controller itself.

The support page uses CUH-ZCT2U as an example model number. Separately, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller Instruction Manual identifies model CUH-ZCT1U. These are examples of different DUALSHOCK 4 model designations, not evidence that all controllers share one serial or that a model code replaces a serial.

Common questions people are really asking
“I have two controllers with the same model number. Are they the same controller?”
No. A shared model number means the controllers carry the same model designation. It does not identify the individual hardware. Read the serial below each controller’s barcode when you need to distinguish the units.
“Is CUH-ZCT2U my serial number?”
No. CUH-ZCT2U is Sony’s example of a model number. The serial is the longer, 14-character alphanumeric code below the barcode.
“Can I find the controller serial in the PS4 system software?”
Sony’s cited guidance directs you to the label on the back of the DUALSHOCK 4. It does not document a PS4 menu as an alternative source for that number.

It does not state that reading a serial alone authenticates a controller, proves ownership, or verifies its condition. Treat the serial as an identification detail for the physical unit, not as a complete authenticity test.
“Do all PS4-compatible third-party controllers follow this layout?”
Not necessarily. The documented 14-character length and the positions above and below the barcode come from Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 guidance. They should not be generalized to a third-party controller whose manufacturer may use different labels or identifiers.
A quick checklist before contacting support
- Confirm that you are looking at the rear of the DUALSHOCK 4.
- Locate the barcode.
- Copy the 14-character code below it as the serial number.
- Copy the code above it separately as the model number.
- Check that you have not supplied the model example CUH-ZCT2U in place of the serial.
- If any characters are unreadable, say so rather than guessing.
The practical conclusion is straightforward: PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 controllers do not all use one shared serial number.
