Do PS5 Graphics Updates Improve Every Game? Compatibility Explained

PS5 graphics improvements are not automatic across every game. Learn how Game Boost, developer patches, PS5 versions, and display settings differ.

No. A PS5 does not automatically upgrade the graphics of every game. Most PS4 games can run on PS5, and Sony’s Game Boost may improve or stabilize performance in select titles, but visual changes depend on the game, its software version, and the display and console settings in use.

What can change how a game looks on PS5?

Several separate mechanisms are often mistaken for a universal graphics update. A PS4 game may benefit from the PS5’s hardware through Game Boost; a developer may issue a title-specific patch; a game may have a native PS5 version or eligible upgrade; or the console and display may support different video-output settings. None of those means that every game receives a new graphics treatment.

  • Game Boost: Sony says select PS4 games may run at a higher or more stable frame rate on PS5. Games with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution may also show higher fidelity in some cases. Sony does not promise these effects for every compatible game. Sony’s PS4-on-PS5 compatibility guidance and Game Boost information describe the feature and its limits.
  • Developer updates: A patch may alter resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, or visual effects, but the effect is specific to that game and patch. An available update is not evidence by itself that graphics changed.
  • PS5 versions and upgrades: A native PS5 version or eligible upgrade is distinct from running the PS4 version through backward compatibility. Check which version is installed before comparing visuals.
  • Display output: Resolution, VRR, and 120 Hz output require support from the game and the connected TV or monitor. Output compatibility alone does not show that a developer added new graphics features. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV in its PS5 video-output guidance.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

Sony says the overwhelming majority of the PS4 catalog—more than 4,000 games—can be played on PS5. Its PlayStation ecosystem FAQ also describes compatibility as more than 99 percent of PS4 games; Sony does not date that statistic as a new 2026 measurement. Compatibility is broad, not universal: Sony maintains a list of PS4-only games and warns that some otherwise compatible titles may show errors, unexpected behavior, or missing PS4 functionality. Check the current compatibility information or PlayStation Store label for the specific game: PS4 games playable on PS5 and PlayStation ecosystem FAQ.

How to check for an update on PS5

  1. On the Games home screen, highlight the game.
  2. Press the controller’s Options button.
  3. Select Check for Update.
  4. To learn whether the update changes graphics, read the publisher’s patch notes or version-specific announcement. Look for explicit details about resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, or visual effects.

Sony says a game or app also updates automatically to the newest version available when started. Its instructions for checking PS5 game updates explain update availability, not what each patch changes.

PS5 Pro: what the PS4 image-quality setting does

PS5 Pro offers an image-quality setting for PS4 games, but it is not a universal patch and has hardware and display requirements. Sony says the setting is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and requires a display that supports 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. If enabling it causes unexpected gameplay behavior, Sony advises turning it off. See Sony’s PS5 Pro PS4 image-quality instructions for the current setting details.

How to tell whether a specific game looks better

Identify the game version and the source of the change before drawing a conclusion. Compare the PS4 version running through backward compatibility with a native PS5 version only when you know which one is installed. Then use the publisher’s patch notes to confirm which outcome—such as resolution, frame rate, stability, or a named visual effect—was changed. Check that your console model and screen support any relevant setting or output mode.

Because the question does not name a game, no particular patch’s effect can be established here. For a title-specific answer, its publisher’s version notes are the evidence that can say whether a particular update changed graphics.
